Based on my research, the ideal ambient temperature for a Rhodesian Ridgeback’s comfort is somewhere around the surface temperature of the sun. Short of that, they have to make due with sunlight, blankets and heaters. Of all the ways to stay warm this winter, Penny has two particular favorites –  kinetic energy (running at Mach 1 is nice and toasty)  and a good roaring fire. This weekend is going to be bitter cold here in Chicago, so our plan is to run fast in the snow and then cozy up slow to the fire.  Hope everyone has a great weekend!

  2. 8.7°F? I would skip the snow part ;o) this day screams for the BFF… Blankie, Fireplace, Food :o)

Looks like you are all ready for this next snow storm heading your way. I had to put the coats on our kids this morning here in Alabama (30 degrees). I like how Penny “hopped” over the fence around the dog park, she has mastered that leap and having extra snow piled up makes for an easier escape. Stay toasty and warm

  4. Pat says:

I’m definitely with Penney on this! We’re enjoying the great, warm indoors.

The colder it gets, the happier my two pups get. And the UNhappier I get! LOL Who wants to be standing out there in the freezing cold while the dogs sit and stare off into the frigid nothingness? 😉

  6. Kismet says:

We still drive with the A/C on.

We got dumped on yesterday in Cal; rain, no snow at our level. So I took my water fearing dogs to the fast rising river for a run. We got soaked and they had a blast. What I saw, you posted this morning. Crazy circles, hill (in our case, a hill splattered with river rock) running, mud slinging, fun loving Ridgeback play. It’s only in the mid-50s here, but the temp is supposed to drop a lot this weekend. Neeka and Khoi curled up on the couch under their blankets for the rest of the night. I was thinking about you guys when I heard the forecast for Chicago. Stay inside with that fire going. Hopefully, no babies will want to be born into that much cold, so Emily can be there right beside you. Have a comfy, cozy weekend.

  8. Your videos are v. good (moving even). The music could be from Pachelbel’s Canon – music that has been used to accompany a murmuration of starlings, here in the UK.

  9. This was definitely the week to bring out Penny’s winter coat! In previous years, my dog hasn’t seemed to mind the cold too much, but this week we barely made it farther than our yard before running back inside. I think he might be getting a coat (and boots) for Christmas!

  10. Emmadog says:

We’re getting a load of snow today and tomorrow and then record cold temps. We still go out, but not for very long, and Madison isn’t liking below zero temps too much. She still needs to grow some furs I think. Stay warm!

Run run or stay by the fire

  12. The Polar Vortex hit Denver today with our high expected to be 6 this afternoon. That along with the 10″ of the white stuff is a surefire guarantee to keep a couple of (sub)Standards inside unless absolutely necessary. The first session of shoveling has been for a “latrine” for their pampered backsides. 😉 Stay warm and cozy.

  13. Jo Rhodes says:

Our yesterday started off at 4 degrees! This morning we had snow up to our bellies. I think today is going to be spent in a puppy pile in a queen sized bed. Any suggestion of going outside is met with side-eyes and unprintable thought bubbles. Keep warm guys!
Love from under the monster quilt, Jo, Sam and Dean

  14. Really cold here too so a nice fire is in order. Stay warm

  15. Nina says:

A year or so ago I found your videos on YouTube because I was looking to see if all rhodesian ridgebacks love the heat or if my Brea was just crazy. I have enjoyed watching your pups eversince. We got a small space heater last winter amd Brea has claimed it has her own. She goes as far as knocking on it to tell us to turn it on (I think she has us trained pretty well). While the kids and I try to sit by it first Brea will just lay on top of us until we get so uncomfortable we move.

  16. Love that girl!! Can’t help but have tears in my eyes (((hugs)))
