A Warm Maine Welcome

Until yesterday morning I had never been to Maine, so I naturally assumed that the state population breakdown would be 50% lobstermen and 50% lobsters.  As it turns out, that is not the case. You really do learn something new every day.

The original itinerary called for a straight shot from our hotel in Boston to our hotel in Cape Elizabeth, but one reader changed our schedule when she told us about her dog friendly business in Wells, Maine.  Laurie Smith owns and runs The Rollover Cafe, a breakfast and lunch shop located right off the beach in Wells.  If the name doesn’t convince you that the Cafe is dog-friendly, then the sign out front sure will.

Eko and I were both hungry, so Rollover was the perfect stop

Laurie is a dog lover who has always worked in the restaurant industry, so two years ago she decided to combine her passions and open Rollover.  The cafe is lined with photos of four-legged customers and a holiday tree is covered with fresh baked dog treats – some of which were shaped like lobsters!  So, hey, I wasn’t that far off…

Eko recommends the peanut butter and oat dog cookies and I recommend the grilled chicken and avocado sandwich.  Though to be honest, everything looked great.  Eko suggested that we try everything on the menu – for research purposes only of course – but I didn’t fall for his scam.  The Rollover Cafe is a cozy, locally owned place that serves up really good food for not one, but two species.  Before you hit the beach in Wells, you absolutely need to stop by Rollover.

After I finished up lunch, Eko and I walked down the block to the beach.  The codes vary town by town, but in the off season your dog is allowed on the beach in Wells.  I can’t be positive, but I think Eko enjoyed the trip:

Runners on your mark…

Get set…

The ride from Boston to Portland isn’t a long one, but it was nice to break up the trip with lunch at Rollover and a run down the beach.  So thank you to Laurie for welcoming Eko and I to Maine in the best possible way we could imagine.  Rollover Cafe has set the bar high for the rest of the trip.

If you know of any pet friendly destinations in the Portland area, be sure to get in contact with us. Do it!.  The more unique the destination, the better.  This morning we are going to check out some trails and parks south of Portland and then head into the city this afternoon.  Hope to see some of you there!
