We Need Your Help: What Are Your Dog’s Favorite Toys?

Just like I always manage to mess up foolproof plans, Eko has a knack for quickly destroying “invincible” dog toys.  Chicago weather is notoriously finicky so I’d like to find a couple good toys to help keep Eko entertained when we have to stay indoors.   Here is what we’re working with
Just like I always manage to mess up foolproof plans, Eko has a knack for quickly destroying “invincible” dog toys.  Chicago weather is notoriously finicky so I’d like to find a couple good toys to help keep Eko entertained when we have to stay indoors.   Here is what we’re working with so far.

“Yeah, Will, we’re gonna need to fill this whole basket with toys”

Item #1: The toy formerly filled with stuffing

Still works,  Sort of.

It might be just a bit hard to tell, but the cloth piece in the above photo used to be a fully formed lion.  Eko quickly beat the stuffing out of it and now likes to keep it as a trophy.  In the past I’ve bought “tough” (aka expensive!) plush toys for Eko but he tears through those just as easily.  If I see a cheap plush toy on sale, I’ll buy it, but I’m hoping to find something a bit more durable.

2. Kong Bone

Eko’s been fishing for treats out of this Kong bone since he was a pup

Not long after I got Eko I bought a Kong Bone.  It was definitely one of the best purchases I made.  The bone can take a serious beating and Eko loves to lay down and go to work dislodging the treats from either end.

3. Kong Treat Ball

Eko’s favorite

The Kong Bone is great when Eko wants to snack and lounge, but if I need to burn off some of Eko’s extra energy, then the Kong Treat Ball is my go to toy.  Made of the same durable material as all Kong products, the Treat Ball has an opening where you can stuff – you guessed it – treats!  Eko really has to work to get the treats out and by the time he’s got the last one he is ready for a nap.

4. The antler

Eko will pass up any bone for a good antler

Eko has sampled just about every type of bone there is, but none of them compare to his beloved antler.  He gets bored with bones after a few days, but he is always happy to munch on his antler to pass the time.  We picked up his current antler in Montana (literally, we just picked it up off the ground on a farm) but there are plenty of places to buy them.  If you haven’t bought an antler for your dog before, I highly recommend you try it.  They’re more expensive than a bone, but they last forever and are well worth the investment.

And that’s it!  Just three toys – I don’t count the eviscerated lion.  I’m not looking to get Eko a ton of new toys, but I would like to add two or three new ones to the rotation.  For putting up with me, I think he’s earned them!  If your dog has a favorite toy that’s not on the list, let me know.  There are so many to choose from so it always helps to get some recommendations from the experts – you!

Eko wishfully looking for more toys at the bottom of the basket

Thanks in advance from Eko for any suggestions!

Comments for We Need Your Help: What Are Your Dog’s Favorite Toys?

  1. Carol Conner says:

My only addition might be a Wubba. I’m not sure if that is their formal name but they look like a ball with octopus legs. Like Eko, Magic never met a stuffed or squeakered toy he couldn’t destroy in two minutes. Along with the trusty kongs, bones, etc his other go to toy is his Wubba, He can sling it, throw it in the air, play tug, or just chomp on it and it has lasted almost a year so far.

  2. Marion Misch says:

The one stand out day-to-day toy at my house is the West Paws Bumi. The dogs love it and multiple ones can play with it at the same time.

  3. Joan says:

The Wubba’s are great! Also, my Ridgies love the stuffed toys from Fluff & Tuff. They’ve survived the dogs’ chewing and tearing at them with only the occasional ear being chewed off.

  4. Shary Hover says:

Lola eviscerates every stuffed toy I give her. She loves them, but I do feel like I’m wasting money when I buy them for her. She likes the Good Cuz/Bad Cuz rubber dog toys, too, though. They’re like balls with feet so they have an interesting bounce and they don’t roll under the furniture.

  5. Melody says:

My RRs love the stuffed toys from Kohl’s stores. They are $5 and the funds go to children’s related charities. We make sure to get the toys without hard eyes or parts the dogs can swallow. The stuffing is eventually ripped out but I feel the toys are stronger than most dog toys. Another plus is there is not squeaker.

  6. Victoria Coleman says:

i have two dogs that can rip toys apart in just a few minutes – but i have found a few that are pretty good – skineez are non-stuffed toys w/squeakers and are great toys which will last you about 4 or 5 months – they don’t do well w/two dogs (or at least not two big dogs like mine) using them for tug of war but are great for one dog . Also we got a big ball (think basketball but a little bigger) from Petsmart.com that is plastic and they kind of play soccer with it and can’t eat it so that has lasted almost 2 years and gives them some fun as well.

  7. Annie says:

I have a German Shepherd/Akita mix who loves Planet Dogs Snowball. He chews on it in the house and will chase it until he cant run anymore. Ive only had to replace it once in 3 years only because I threw it over the fence and couldnt find it.

  8. Susan and Themba says:

Themba and Salem like the Kong squeak tennis balls. Also the products made by JW pets.

  9. Susan Themba says:

Also Themba likes ropes. And if your looking for another good chew bone try pork hide bones from here http://www.lifesabundance.com/Pets/Treats/PorkHide.aspx?realname=20108729cat=0hdr=Ath=False lasts Themba over an hour

  10. M.A. says:

Wyatts favorite puzzle toys (which are indestructible) are the Busy Buddys Tug-a-Jug and the Kibble Nibble. He also loves his wubba! (I think I actually showed it to Eko in the backyard last week when u stopped by?!) And finally while Wyatt doesnt completely destroy stuffed toys hes been known to de-stuff a few, but his all time favorite is Serena the Swan from the Bird Brain dog toy collection and she hasn’t shed any fuss yet!

  11. alon says:

the kong Wobbler is my dog favorite

  12. Lucianos mom says:

Lu can destroy a black kong in 2 weeks. The only chew toy thats lasted (and BOY! has it lasted) is a Goughnut. He did okay with a Zogoflex Tux, which you can hide treats in. One other fave is braided 300-weight fleece scraps in a tug/rope and the ring tug from Doodlebug Duds.

  13. Sarah Kyllo says:

My dog, Millie’s favorite toy is a cheap $3 plastic pink rubber chicken dog toy from Target, she’s on her 2nd one, after ripping off the first ones legs, but it has lasted about a year. I toss it back and forth across the house for her, and she loves to chew on it and play fetch.

  14. lchaimcanine says:

Thanks for stopping by! Another great line of toys are Tuffies made by VIP. They come in all kinds of great designs such as a giant pink pig and a T-Rex. They are made of a special fabric that is layered and quilted to be be super tough. I have had several survive Rottweilers for a long time!

  15. I have lots of soft stuffed toys that my Mum picks up for a collar or two at thrift shops. I’m not allowed anything with glass or plastic eyes or noses, as I have a habit of chewing them off and trying to eat them. I actually once decapitated a teddy bear, too. 🙁

My all-time favourite is my black Kong Extreme. Mum actually bought it before she and dad got me from the Greyhounds as Pets programme! Mum usually puts peanut butter in it and I LOVE it! I don’t have to worry much about putting on weight, you see, as I have a slender waistline. (Plus, it can bounce all over the place when I drop it!) 🙂

  16. OOPS! Mum meant to say, for a DOLLAR or two! 🙂
