When Did You Know Your Pet Was The One?

One of my favorite parts of talking with other pet owners is hearing the stories about how they found their pets – or quite often – how their pets found them.  The stories are always unique and they show the different ways we all ended up at the same place.
One of my favorite parts of talking with other pet owners is hearing the stories about how they found their pets – or quite often – how their pets found them.  The stories are always unique and they show the different ways we all ended up at the same place.  When I was searching through old photos for a post this week, I came upon some grainy cell phone footage of my first visits with Eko.  Take a look and let me know if you think there was any way I could have ended up with a more perfect adventure companion:
As you can see, I don’t think there was much of a choice – Eko was the one!  If you have a good, “I knew my pet was the one when….” story please be sure to share. They always make me smile.

Really enjoyed reading your story about seeing Eko for the 1st time. I drove 400 miles (1 way) to attend a “puppy coming out party” and to pick out my soon-to-be companion. There were people there from all over the country. Rooi wore a yellow ribbon and was the one out playing with the “big dogs”..it was pretty much love at 1st sight. I took lots of videos that day, and am so glad to have them for posterity. Rooi loves seeing his baby pictures.

  2. OMdoG how cute was he? Now he is handsome, back then I bet he stole your heart.

Will our first two Labs picked us. We went to breeders and with each one, our dogs approached us judged we were o.k and gave us the Beam Me Up Scotty look. You may recall the Name the Puppy contest won by your Aunt Liz with Farley. Pepper was of course named after Police Woman, Angie Dickinson. We picked Sandy as a rescue Lab.

  4. My first ridgeback Zomba was the serious runt of the litter. When I met her she came and hid under my legs. She was the one. My heart was stolen. What an honor to be able to have one of these amazing beings be part of our life! Nala was 2 when I met her. Zomba, the one who did therapy work, had just died from degenerative myolopathy. A dreadful disease similar to Lou Gehrig’s disease. I was just visiting some ridgeback friends for the first time since she died, and the breeder called my friend while I was leaving to ask if she knew if I needed a new ridgeback? My friend stopped me and then dragged me to see this beautiful dog who had been given back to the breeder for being obnoxious and difficult.
She was aloof, and I was still grieving. But we took a short walk and I thought about her for days. The breeder “loaned” her to me to see if it would work out. Five years later, we are still in love. We both needed each other at that moment. We still do. She rescued me from too much sadness, after Zomba died. And for her I give her lots of attention, exercise, and boundaries. She is no longer obnoxious.

Loved the Video Will. Seems Eko knew he’d have to convince your better half too, (Slick-Guy Move 101: butter up the girlfriend first). A few years back we were taking our dog Buddy for a walk and practically tripped over this little black kitten in our crescent (not the first drop off). Turned out Paco (we named him) was the most lovable trouble free cat a person could ask for. Never scratched a thing….he definitely picked us since the neighbors weren’t cat folk persay.

  6. Aww that’s cute.
Mummy and daddy came to visit me at my birth mother’s house, but by then only me and my ‘twin’ were left unclaimed. Such a hard choice as they couldn’t take both of us, but I was the more curious of us and kept rolling for bellyrubs so they picked me 🙂 Or rather, I picked them!

i went to the animal shelter to adopt one of the st. bernard/beagle mix pups – I wanted to get the little girl but the little boy ran to me and started licking me – and right away i knew he was the one -we named him rigby- it happened to be on dec 24th so he was my christmas present and continues to be such a great present every day

  8. Eko’s video is adorable!! So squishy and squiggly 🙂

I found Bailey on Petfinders.com – the first day that he was on the site (after being cured of mange, born on the streets in West Virginia). I’d been “browsing” dogs for weeks and had decided to give it a rest for a while, when he popped up. I called Scott at work and asked if he could come home “ummmm, RIGHT NOW” so we could drive almost two hours to visit Bailey at his foster mom’s. He was 5 months old, standing silhouetted in the doorway, with one ear up and one down, and I was already in love! When we met him that evening, he growled at Scott and then jumped up into the chair I was sitting in, with me! Scott just shook his head, smiled, and said, “I guess we’ll be taking him home, now.” 🙂

  9. Love the video, they are all so cute!!

I knew from the moment mine were born they were the ones, I have been very blessed to have helped whelp all of my dogs 🙂
