My Wounded Warrior – UPDATE

Eko took a pretty nasty spill at the park yesterday and came up limping.  Eko was intent on staying to play, but we kind of have a rule around here that if you can’t move one of your appendages you should seek medical attention.

Three out of four is usually a good average, but no so much when it comes to legs

Now, normally we find adventure, but sometimes adventure just seems to find us.  There is never a dull moment, not even in the waiting room at the vet.

“Hello, Clarice” – Eko and the office bird were both very interested in each other.  Eko was wagging his tail and wanted to say hi, but there was a sign that let me know the bird might have less than amicable intentions

Literally, there was a sign.

Eko and I sat on the other side of the room to avoid any further injuries.  As expected, Eko’s spill earned him an x-ray.

The little guy fractured his toe, but luckily it’s not serious enough to require surgery

Aside from normal walks, Eko is now on a strict regimen of R&R for at least three to four weeks.  Unfortunately that is going to cut into some of our planned hiking excursions and other active adventures, but I’m sure we will find plenty of ways to have fun and cause trouble!  It’s sort of our specialty.

Eko is happy to report that his appetite for treats and his appetite for adventure are both uninjured!

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes!  At this time I would also like to announce that we are formally accepting funny three-legged-themed nickname submissions for Eko now that we know he’s going to be okay.  Here’s my list so far, feel free to add:

1.Tripod

2. The Hop Along Kid

3. Hop scotch

4. Foot soldier

Hope everyone has a great weekend!  Eko will get some anti-inflammatory meds, some pain meds and a nice spot in front of the fire.  Life could be worse.

So glad to hear it wasn’t too serious, but oh, Eko looks just so pathetic in that first photo! At least the bird seemed to take his mind off his pain. I like Tripod for a temporary nickname! 🙂

  2. Evelyne says:

    iHop? 🙂

Glad to know it’s not too serious, but my heart goes with you both. I feel for Eko, as I felt for my dog (Eko’s size) when he tripped and lost one of his nails, poor thing! And I also feel for you, as you’ll soon learn, it’s very difficult to make them follow doctor’s orders, lol!

  3. catchatcaren says:

I am sooooooooo relieved that Eko doesn’t have to have surgery and I KNOW that you are too!! Better to rest now then to risk another spill when the ice and snow start. This way he should be good as new by then! I bet the warmth of your fireplace will be good for him too!

How about the nickname of “Gimpy” 🙂

  4. Paws To Talk says:

Oh no Eko! Feel better! We love that last picture of you with a treat!
    Bella and DiDi

  5. Bridget says:

Poor Eko. He’ll be driving you mad in a few days, wanting to go out and play. Get well soon.

  6. Duncanymama says:

    Three paws mcgraw

  7. I’m glad everything is going to be OK, the R & R might be a little difficult to enforce but I’m sure you’ll both make it through just fine.

A name you might want to consider is Gimpy, it’s a nickname I use for Dottie our 7 yr old black lab mix when her arthritis acts up and she starts hopping around.

  8. Well, we thought Tripod would work but it’s already bagged. After a few days he’ll probably turn into ‘Hop Along Crabbity’. Stay cool dear Eko and mend fast.

  9. aud says:

My, what a handsome paw you have, Eko!! Glad that you’re okay thought. Will, you might just have to strap Eko on your back during day time for next 3 weeks to stop him from using that paw!!

  10. Awww – poor Eko. Hope he enjoys being spoiled rotten for a few weeks now. That’s got to hurt but, dogs being dogs, they never think it’ll stop them. Figuring your place may get the worst of this, without the normal exercise. Wishing you luck on that front and sending lots of get well wishes to Eko.
You could call him Third Wheel (three’s always a crowd).

  11. tora327 says:

Will, have you found any water therapy places around Chicago? Maybe Eko could swim while his foot heals. Good luck! Feel better soon, Eko

  12. LuAnn says:

Sorry to hear about Eko’s boo-boo but glad he will be up and about soon.

  13. Eko definitely deserved a yummy bully braid – Bailey LOVES those. I can’t improve on the nicknames already submitted – my favorite is definitely iHop!

  14. Glad to hear that is nothing major and that he’ll be back in action soon.

  15. I’m sorry Eko fractured his toe but glad he doesn’t need surgery. No walking boot cast for dogs, eh?

  16. Boomdeeadda says:

On the bright side, that’s great news. R&R is always a welcome treat when someone’s there to look after you so well. That’s a cool xray too. I saw someone take negatives and ModgePodge them onto a Glass container…then you put a candle inside. Bam, you have an awsome lamp! So while Eko’s relaxing, you can be crafting…hehe “your welcome”. 😉

  17. get well soon dear Eko, hope you didn’t need a cone. Have a pain-free and good saturday ;o)

  18. Marcela says:

Lol. You always post the most funny entries in any blog I’ve seen. But, now let’s get serious; I am sorry Eko got hurt and I hope he recuperates soon so you and Eko can go out for your interesting and many, many, times funny outings:) I vote for Tripod:)

  19. That whole R and R thing is hard. But the way to take advantage of it is to wear him out mentally. Practice those tricks that require a lot of thinking. Lots of puzzles. And treats in boxes that are in boxes that are in packages that are in boxes – so he has something to work on. You can also give him lots of stimulation by going out for car rides. Glad it was a small thing – and hope he heals quickly.

  20. Rest up and get well soon Eko xx

  21. onebluedog says:

Three or four weeks with no running wild? That is rough! Eko is definitely going to need some good chewy treats to keep him occupied – I know I would!

I think Eko would also feel better if he could have a wooden peg leg and a good pirate name while he gets better 🙂 Oh, and a parrot! Not that naughty bird at the vet’s office though!

  22. John Arvin - Mystic Isle Ridgebacks says:

Will, I’m very sorry to hear that Eko got hurt. Get well soon. Goldi and Pete said to gang in there!. John

  23. Jenn lively says:

I have a three legged cat named Trip. He came with that name and the girl asked me not to change it. But sometimes I call him club foot or gimpy. Lol!
