What Do My Dog And The Little Mermaid Have In Common?

Normally, if I have to compare Eko to a Disney character, I will say that he is Simba from The Lion King, singing Hakuna Matata and romping around like a knucklehead.  However, after getting sidelined by a fractured toe, Eko’s romps are temporarily on pause.  The little guy has now been transformed into Ariel from The Little Mermaid and he is singing an entirely more despondent tune:

“Wandering free, wish I could be, PART OF YOUR WORLLLD!”

We usually spend our weekends on galavanting adventures, but for the past few days Eko has been on strict bed rest per doctor’s orders.  It was torture for the little guy to have to watch other dogs play right outside our window, but it was for the best.

After a stormy Sunday evening, a burst of sunlight filled the apartment this morning

Between this weekend’s inactivity and this morning’s sunshine, Eko was going crazy for some action.  The rest and the medication have helped Eko go from the hop-along kid (three legged locomotion only) to the limp-along kid (light pressure on the  injured foot) so I decided to take him on a slow walk to the park.  We avoided the temptation of other dogs and found a pain-free way for Eko to have some fun.

Crunching leaves is always good for a smile

Eko got a kick out of rolling around in the leaves and I was glad to see him enjoying himself again.  However, keeping Eko entertained and my apartment intact over the next few weeks is going to be interesting to say the least.  I have plans to take Eko to a nearby facility where he can swim out some of his energy, but I’m also on the look out for other ways to keep Eko busy and myself sane.  Thankfully a number of good suggestions about tiring Eko out mentally have already come in.  Does anyone have a recommended toy or puzzle that they like to use at home?

Eko, we are feeling for you, at least you got some fun time 🙂 xx00xx

Nina Ottosson (I know I misspelled that) are the BEST!! The absolute BEST! The only problem is, if Eko is like Dakota, they are treat-based puzzles and he figured his out in 30 seconds.

I think swimming is the perfect idea. It is therapeutic and gentle on the muscles. What does the doctor think?

  3. raisingdaisy says:

Oh poor Eko! What torture to watch all his dog-buddies playing outside without him! But we’re glad he’s able to go outside for a bit anyway, even if he can’t romp around. He sure does look happy out there! Hope your recovery time passes quickly Big Guy! 😀

  4. Chin up dear boy! Sadly no bright ideas for non-active stimulation but it sounds like others do.

  5. Stuff a Kong full of peanut butter, yogurt, kibble and maybe a few other treats and freeze it. Once it’s frozen it should keep him busy for a while he recovers some more.

  6. Yay, glad you got to have some fun Eko!

  7. Wow, that is going to be tough for a high-energy dog. What a great idea to take him for a swim. I love that idea. I live with cats that sleep 18 hours a day, so I don’t have any decent tips for you, but I’m sure ideas will pore in from others. Best of luck.

  8. Uncle Austin says:

Get a blender and mix equal parts American Whisky and Mi-lem and a dash of orange juice. Add lots of ice and blend on the frappe setting. Garnish with an orange slice and maraschino cherry. Repeat P.R.N. as Dr. Emily would say. But enough about you, now for Eko the patient. Do that frozen Kong toy treat. That sounded good. Put Amimal Planet on for him.

  9. Bongo says:

My person gets me soft balls that she can toss for me to catch in the house. But she has to be careful where she throws them, and sometimes I accidentally knock them into strange places.

  10. Oh that’s difficult (Mission Impossible, part x)… I drove my staff into madness after my paw-surgery and the following bed rest. Godd luck Will…. best wishes to Eko :o)

  11. Boomdeeadda says:

That’s a great photo in the sun beam and again in the leaves. Swimming sounds absolutely fantastic. Our dog Buddy tore the muscles in his knee once, sorry I didn’t have any ideas to offer. He was much older than Eko so he was ok to just sleep on his pillow most of the time. I think as long as they have you near by, that’s the most important thing to a pet when they aren’t feeling 100%

  12. onebluedog says:

Eko looks so happy to be out in the world!

Mom agrees that Nina Ottoson puzzles and frozen Kongs are really good! And I like my Kong Wobbler too. Sometimes mom just hides kibbles around the house, so it takes a while for me to use my nose and find them all.

  13. Those have to be the most pathetic looks ever – except for the last one where Eko finally looks normal again.
Treat balls are a great way to keep them entertained, if Eko is food orientated.

  14. aud says:

Take him on a lot of drive-around in the car, in your neigborhood, through the bank drive thru, through the park…drive and drive and drive, i mean daily, pretty soon Eko will think car rides are as good as a romp in the dog park, plus it will buff up your biceps and leg muscles so much from carrying him up and down the stairs, in and out of the car you’ll be ready for Mr body builder contest in no time.

  15. We use a rolling treat-filled toy called Kibble Nibble to keep our pack busy. Hope Eko heals soon!

  16. Jorie says:

Love the comparison to Ariel. Arieko? Hope the big guy gets better soon!
