Eko selflessly playing on the beach in San Diego
And while our fridge may be out of commission, last night we got an indication that we might not need a fridge for the next few months.
Eko did his best to clean off the pumpkins, but it was to no avail. The message was clear:
Eko: Will, are you writing on random cars in our neighborhood?
Will: Eko, you sure ask a lot of questions for a dog. Just make sure no one is looking.
As the old saying goes, winter officially begins when the first snow flake falls on Mr. Eko’s nose
Luckily our apartment building bought the good stuff!
Last year most of the country got away with an easy winter. In fact, Eko and I were playing on the beaches of New England well into December. This year I have a feeling we are not going to be so lucky. Eko has a great waterproof/warm jacket for when the temperature drops, but I know that not everyone in the city uses pet-friendly ice melter. This means that it is time to try the great paw-boot experiment once again. Last time I attempted to get Eko to try boots he was not having it, but I think they are going to be a necessity this winter. He already hurt his paw once so I want to make sure he is safely equipped to have a romping good time this winter.
Does your dog have winter boots? If so, do you have any recommendations about brands/sizing/acclimation? Any help would be much appreciated by me and my temporarily 3.5 legged sidekick. Thanks!
Oh, and Old Man Winter – Eko has a message for you too:
I am thinking we are going to have a mild winter. Stay tuned! Nope…no way would Dakota wear boots! lol
Don’t ambush him with the boots; pets pick up on our moods, so the less you act like it’s a big deal, the less trouble you *should* have. Animals depend on their paws for more than just walking on, so it’s no surprise he hates them.
Good luck with the boots!
Dog boots are a dilemma. Sounds like a great idea but never seem to work out. I wish I could find some for my shitzu-poodle. He actually cries when they get too cold after about 10 min in snow.
Hiya Eko – Nice to find your blog! Brrrrrrr! Hope you have a coat. Aroofs from Ridgeback girl Zola in England!
Living in New England, I go to the beach rain or shine or hurricane or snow or hands-falling-off-from-cold in the winter, gotta take advantage of when the beach is open to dogs (at all costs)!
I’ve been thinking about investing in a dog coat at least (eyeing Ruffwear jackets), I think my dog would forget how to walk if I tried to put boots on him so those are a no-go. He is kind of oblivious to the cold, perhaps because he was raised in winter, and enjoys sticking his face in snow and pushing with his back legs like a snowplow endlessly.
So perhaps I should save my money.

We live in MI but adopted Coty when we lived in New orleans. He is a lab and hound mix and looks and acts just like Eko. They would be great friends! Coty has to wear boots in the hard winter cuz the ice cuts his feet. They have a goot sole on the bottom which is key. Also velcro strap makes putting on and off key! He walks funny when they go on but they help his feet not to be cut up all the time!
Hope you don’t have the winter the forecasters were predicting for Chicago last year, one of the worst on record.

Best thing for Eko is to try on at home, not in the store.
How’s his paw?? I mean, foot?
Please send winter my way, I hoping for snow!!
Love the Game of Thrones reference. I was shocked to see flurries on my car two nights ago here in Chicago, when it was practically 70 the day before.
Brrrrrr…I am shivering just looking at those chilly pictures! We don’t get snows here, so I don’t have to wear any boots. I bet Eko is going to look really cool in his boots though. I am excited to see 🙂
PS – I hope Eko’s toe is getting better fast and that he is not too crazy being on resting time!
Lol. I am glad you and Eko did not let anything go to waste:) I lived in San Diego two years and I never saw snow. It rained twice, but that was it. Boots? Good luck. My girl, Alex, hates her sweaters and I give her treats so she does not look like she is being punished while I put it on her, but boots? No, she would not like them at all. She’ll let me put them on her, but I know she’ll take them off. Let us know how Eko does with his boots:) That’s got to be one funny and interesting post:)
Here we already have over a foot of snow and it’s been -20C a few times. But, the boys enjoy having us build snow forts and snowmen for them to destroy, so they are happy. About boots, we make ours wear them from about -15 to -40 (after -40 we only let them out to pee and bring them back in). They hate them, and have to have the second biggest size, but they’re worth it. I have heard Muttluks are good
Hey, welcome to my world. Does the lake freeze along the shore? I always worry about people taking their dogs along the river here. It can be deceiving.
Haha yeah we got our first snow already too – 7″ of it in a nor’easter! (I’ll be posting pics of that on Monday.) They’re definitely predicting a tougher winter for those of us in the northeast this year – I don’t mind AS LONG AS our roof gets fixed first!!!!!
Hats off to both of you for salvaging those “perishables” in the fridge! 😉 That’s the most fun way to do it!
