How Does Your Pet React When They See Your Luggage?

Our pets often know us better than we know ourselves.  Ever notice how the moment you think about going for a walk your dog sprints to the door?  Or how when you check the clock in a certain way your pet dashes over to their food

Our pets often know us better than we know ourselves.  Ever notice how the moment you think about going for a walk your dog sprints to the door?  Or how when you check the clock in a certain way your pet dashes over to their food bowl? Every pet has their own quirks, but it seems like all pets agree on one thing – they hate when the luggage comes out of the closet!

Eko has lived over half his life on the road, so he knows all too well that when the luggage comes out it means I’m hitting the road.  Despite the fact that I have NEVER left him behind, he does everything in his power to make sure I physically can’t leave without him.  This morning I was reorganizing some luggage in the closet, and although I had no travel plans, Eko not-so-sneakily let me know that he would not be left behind.

Hmm, something seems a little bit strange about the contents of that blue bag, let’s take a look at the big picture…

I don’t think Eko has a future as a secret agent.  When I stepped out of the room for a minute, Eko decided to fortify his position:

“Will, I’m ready to go!”

I zipped Eko up and stacked my bag on top of him – normally that would have sent him racing away – but there was no dissuading him!

I briefly considered picking the bag up, but Eko and I have already had one doctor’s visit in the past week, I didn’t think we should risk another.  (If you’re dying to see Eko picked up in a bag, you can check out this post of how I tried to bring him on the subway.) Once I put my luggage back in the closet, Eko realized that it had been a false alarm…although he is now snoozing in front of the door just in case I try to make a move without him.

I love hearing about how other pets handle it when they know you are leaving on a trip – be sure to share any funny/cute stories!

aww… Eko is so smart and adorable!!!

  2. Delft says:

This is so cute! Our dog used to do that too.
It’s what’s so great about dogs. After all, what human would volunteer to come with you without asked when/where/why you’re going, how long you’ll be staying etc?

  3. Uncle Austin says:

Our old Labs, Farley and Pepper, loved going to the Puppy Hotel (boarding at the vets place.) When they saw luggage rolling through the house, they got totally excited it was vacation time for them. They made us feel like bad parents. They would be at the door ready to race out and hop into the car. Your Aunt traveled quire a bit, and when she traveled and the three of us stayed home, two of three of us were totally bummed. Dogs have incredible personalities as we all know.

  4. Bekka and Coty says:

That is very cute. Coty gets depressed until we tell him to go for a ride, then he is back to his crazy self again.

  5. How cute as always! Funny that he thinks he could be left behind when he’s never been!

  6. this soooo made me laugh!!!! lol. Eko is one-of-a-kind I’ll tell ya. He’s too smart for his own good!
Dakota isn’t as affected by suitcases, mostly because we baby gate part of our condo (because of cat toys that we don’t want him to eat lol), so he doesn’t see luggage until it is too late.
My first cat, Bobo, who passed in 2007 used to go and lie on the luggage or IN the luggage and would become visibly upset.
Cody sniffs it, he mostly cares about food…but when I return home, that’s another story all together!

  7. Tiffany F. says:

He is too funny! My husband travels a lot for work so he’s always packing and unpacking. When that square box with the wheels comes out, our dog Tonto’s mood definitely changes! He gets depressed! Poor buddy. Guess he’s not too fond of his alone time with mom. 😛

  8. Great photos. Your posts are so endearing.

  9. Boomdeeadda says:

They sure do have that intuition or the 7 sense that humans wish we had. We always have to look over our shoulders to ensure when we close the door that Blossum is on the right side. She’s the sneaky one and sooooo fast.

  10. My dogs become sad when they see my luggage, but they never climb in! That Eko sure is a character…

  11. I’m scared if I see the luggage – it means we need the car and I HATE THE CAR.

  12. Oh bless Eko. Usually mummy and daddy are going away nanny and grampy usually look after me and that’s sooooo much more fun then mummy and daddy being here BOL

  13. Poor think, he’s not aware of his size lol
Doggy whenever he sees me picking my backpack he goes to the door, teh problem is now we have 2 doors at home, the service and the elevator, he gets all confused and starts whining lol

  14. Cindy says:

That made me smile to see such a big dog try to get in your bags. I have a chihuahua so seeing her do it is not as funny as that. Very cute and innocent.

  15. caitlin says:

Oh my gosh, this kills me – how cute! Mine are the same way. They just know when you’re up and about getting things ready for a trip. She tends to act sad and depressed though, like she knows she won’t be coming along 🙁

  16. Jenn lively says:

My shih tzu bubba will block the front door after dragging his leash over and if u try to move him or go past him he will head butt your legs.

  17. Kim S. (nerdgrl) says:

Steffi figures that if she lays on the stuff to go in the luggage then we cant pack therefore, we cant leave. I wait to the last minute to pack her food, blanket, and fluffy toys (though not fluffy doll–if she were lost I dont know what would happen since Steffis had her for 13 years..yep, I said 13)–Steffi definitely knows something up if Mommy is packing her food.

  18. Duncanymama says:

My dog loves to be in bags. I dare not leave my purse open on floor or he will scrach and dig til he gets his butt in it.

  19. onebluedog says:

I get really excited when I see the suitcase because mom and dad pretty much always take me with them. The one time they didn’t, I got to got to this really cool place where I ran around and played with a bunch of other pups all day.

But my brown stripey kitty likes to do just what Eko does! Even though he pretty much never gets to come along, he always tries to pack himself up in the luggage.

  20. Jorie says:

Hahaha, my childhood dogs would get extremely sulky and uneasy when we would bring down the suitcases, because it meant we were traveling by air, and thus, not bringing them along! BUT when we started loading up the RV, they knew it meant a camping trip, and they always came on those. So they’d get REALLY excited and be sure to position themselves in the middle of the RV, lest we leave in too big of a hurry and forget them 😉

  21. I dont travel much, but my Yorkie definitely knows whats about to transpire when she sees my suitcases. She gets even more clingy than usual and she guards the door to make sure I dont leave without her.
