What Makes Your Pet Unique?

Whether you have had one pet or twenty, you know that every pet is unique.  They have personality (petsonality?) and quirks all their own.  They have habits and preferences and a repertoire of tricks you never taught them.  Here are a few of my favorite little things that make Eko…well, Eko!

Rhodesian Ridgeback, pet adventure, dog blog

I call this pose, “The Thinker.”  Despite having a full three-cushion couch to stretch out on, Eko often prefers to sit on the couch, rest his head on the back and ponder the mysteries of the universe for hours on end.  It doesn’t look very comfortable, but he loves it!

Where is your pet’s favorite place to be scratched?  For Eko it is right on either side of his back hips.  Visitors often wonder why Eko is so eager to show off his derriere, so I quickly have to explain that he is just hoping to get a scratch.

Since moving to Chicago, Eko has taken up the role of watchdog at the apartment.  For no apparent reason, he often sticks his head out of the top of the stairs and looks around the apartment for five minutes or so.

Much like his dad, subtly is not Eko’s specialty.  Other dogs I’ve had would drop hints when they wanted affection, but Eko simply prefers to turn himself into a canine torpedo

You could replace Eko with a perfect looking clone, but it wouldn’t take long for me to recognize the impostor.  The habits, tendencies and idiosyncrasies just can’t be faked!

What quirks or habits make your pet unique?

Comments for What Makes Your Pet Unique?

  1. Love Eko s quirks. My animals quirks would take a good couple of blog posts to get through but you are right, no one could get an imposter in

  2. I think we are so lucky each has their own traits. It is what makes them so special. I am now learning Pixie’s traits. She loves to sit on my lap no matter who is already on it. Kiva does not like her so we have lots of growling, but it does not deter Pixie one bit. On cold mornings I have three dogs (Pixie, Kiva, and Roxie) on my lap and I would not have it any different. Thank goodness they are not big dogs. Although Pixie at six months old is turning out to be bigger than any of them.

  3. Uncle Austin says:

Our Lab Sandy is OCD. I asked our family doctor who is a dog person about this. She says Oh if you have a Lab its got OCD. There can be five tennis balls in the room and if one rolls under the couch, thats the one she has to have.

My dog and cat have so many!! Dakota is also lacking in subtlety that is for sure! He has to stand and make himself “superior” to me on the couch and then lick the daylights out of me….but…with my husband he shows him his butt! We always wonder why he does that, he never licks my husband’s face like he does to me, he always shows HIM his butt! Any ideas?

  5. Marcela says:

Lol. Oh Eko, you are one of a kind. Alex knows how to “say” to us, “Moms, I am cold”, by looking straight at our faces until we look at her and then she shivers. Once I look at her, she goes to her bed, I put a blanket or two on her and she is out like a light.

  6. Jorie says:

You’re so right; quirks are what make each pet so unique. I love Eko’s thinker pose. Now wouldn’t you just kill to know what he’s thinking?

My parents’ dog Kiva has this funny way of greeting—if you get down on the floor when you first come home, she’ll press her head into your shoulders and neck. It’s kind of like she’s burrowing but it’s firm, and she makes these little whimpering noises. I think the way I just described it sounds creepy but it’s actually the sweetest thing in the entire world.

  7. Boomdeeadda says:

It’s been a lot of fun to get to know Eko’s special personality thru your witty prose and topical humour here at Marking Our Territory, he’s pretty unique. As you know, we are the happy parents of two kitties and they sure have different personalities. Petals loves to be carried around like a baby while Blossum prefers to be loved in your lap. Blossum has a soft gentle meow, while Petals has a wicked hi-pitched, fingernails on the blackboard meow. We love them both for their differences I’d say.

  8. difficult question…where to begin…hmmm.. my staff says they never met a dog like me…but I’m not sure…is this a compliment or a complaint? I think Eko is unique for being EKO …and that’s the best ;o)

  9. I’m into licking. Everyone needs a good wash!

  10. Victoria says:

Rigby loves to cuddle so he jumps up and takes over your lap (only 72lbs but still pretty big for your lap) and Muffin wants your lap too even though at 106 lbs she and Rigby don’t fit so she leans on you while Rigby covers your lap. Rigby also like to walk in between your legs to get either his head rubbed or his back rubbed depending on his moods and he will do it all day long as you walk from one room to the next until you close your legs. Muffin has two quirks she nudges you with her nose when she thinks you ought to be paying her more attention and she puts her paw on your arm or leg to get your attention (and her paws are huge). Muffin also watches TV (specifically Too Cute! and Big Cat Diary) standing on her back paws and barks at the lions/tigers/hyenas/puppies and kittens. And there is no way an imposter would make it at our house – if we humans couldn’t figure it out then Rigs and Muff most certainly would.

  11. Eko has some pretty cute quirks if you ask me! And, you’re right each dog is different. Dottie has a fear of the dishwasher, vacuum and loud noises and sleeps under our bed at night. Boomer doesn’t know a stranger and when he wants to play will bring you shoes from your closet one by one and leave them in a pile in front of you. Silly pups!

  12. onebluedog says:

Hmmm, well Schroeder is unique because he is an animatronic in disguise. And Linus is unique because he drools a Lot when he is happy and is really good at rolling down stairs.

Artemis, my bunny, is unique because she sheds her hairs so it looks like she is wearing a skirt 🙂

And I am unique because out of the hundreds and hundreds of pups mom met and took care of at the shelter, she decided to adopt me!

  13. Gizmo says:

One of the joys of inviting a dog to share your life is discovering those very ways in which your dog is unique…Getting to know their very own personality quirks helps you build that bond which will serve you both for the duration of your time together

  14. Genete Bowen says:

My dog sings / performs with me! Gretta (a Dachshund) myself make up a singing telegram service called GRETTA GRAMS that uses our love for each other Big Band / Swing music to help educate others on many animal care welfare issues in a light-hearted way. Gretta sings for those that have no voice…the animals! Check us out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKt0pimVA1g
