It happens to everyone with a pet.  You step out of the shower and notice that one slipper is missing.  You walk in the door to discover that a mini-tornado appears to have made its way through your living room. You are trying to do something that requires your full attention and a four-legged freight train barrels into your side and shatters your concentration.   Rhodesian Ridgeback, pet adventure

“Oh, I thought you said DO knock over the carefully stacked recycling. My bad”

The thing about pets is that while they are smart and quick learners, they aren’t so great at understanding all of our complicated logic.  Pets don’t care if they ate your favorite shoe or if they knocked over the Christmas tree while romping around.  You can correct a pet if you catch them in the act, but lecturing them afterwards is only good for getting your pet to give you funny looks.

While many of our pets’ indiscretions can be supremely frustrating, I found that Eko has definitely helped me become a much more patient person.  We all know that yelling and stomping your foot at a pet will do no good, so our motto must be to “keep calm and carry on.”

The patience that Eko has taught me came in extremely handy during a recent trip to the Chicago DMV.  After some of the trouble Eko put me through as a puppy, dealing with the frustrations of the DMV seemed like a breeze.  Eko also made life easier by helping put on my new license plates.

I now join Eko as an official Chicago resident

So next time “you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs,” don’t forget to thank your pet!

  1. that’s the best motto: keep calm and carry on … but sometimes not EASY for both sides BOL

  2. Tiffany F. says:

I’ve definitely become a more patient/forgiving person since we adopted Tonto… especially in the first few months when we lost six pairs of shoes, a rug, part of a couch (yes a couch), three pairs of socks, and a couple chair support beams!

  3. catchatcaren says:

fabulous advice! Especially since patience is NOT one of my strong suits!

  4. Aud says:

My almost 100 pound late yellow lab had done some damages to whatever that was on the end table, coffee table, or anything that was at the same height as his tail, when he got excited his tail would go a hundred mile an hour with great force all the while he was beaming and smiling, so how can anyone be made at him? We’ve taught ourselves to accommodate him in the house instead. We’re missing that tail a lot lately. Eko even looks bigger than the tree!! Have you got the tree all decked out yet?

Thank you for pointing this out, Will! I have tried to tell mom and dad that I am really helping them when I cause a little trouble, but I think you’ve explained it much better than I can 🙂

  6. Uncle Austin says:

Dude. If you get Illinois vanity plates for your ride, Clifford, please remember EKO 1 works for Marking Our Territory while ECTO 1 will make folks thing you guys are Ghostbusters. Who ya gonna call?

  7. Kristina says:

Our dog shreds cardboard and paper and leaves it all over the house….we’ve started referring to this as ‘parties’ because it looks like confetti. How could we be mad if he was going to throw us a party??

  8. Jorie says:

Welcome as an official resident! Love the photo of Eko “helping” right the Christmas tree…but secretly looking as if he’s about to knock it down again 🙂

  9. Reblogged this on Time To Train Your Dog and commented:
Dogs definitely teach you patience, especially if you have four of them.
