After that, it was time for Eko to catch up with his oldest friend – my mom’s dog, Scout.

Eko and his mentor

Eko has met plenty of dogs and made plenty of friends in the past year, but just like us, dogs never forget their oldest pals.  I had barely opened the front door before Eko darted in and started romping with Scout like old times.

First they battled for treats (even though they each had their own)

And then they just battled!

Rhodesian Ridgeback, dog adventureBut it’s all a show – these two are best friends

It amazes me how Scout and Eko can pick up right where they left off.  It is also very interesting how Eko lets Scout get away with things he would never let another dog do.  For example, Scout will put Eko’s whole head in her mouth – a very vulnerable position for Eko – but he doesn’t mind it at all.  I guess it reminds him of how they used to play when he was younger (and had a much smaller head).  The two of them have already managed to break two ornaments but hopefully we can keep the rest intact!

Does your pet have an oldest pal and do they act or play differently with them?

How cute!! Tonto tortures my parent’s dog Logan. Actually, he’s a big jerk!! He growls at Logan for sitting on his own bed! He never does that to any other dogs he’s met. I don’t know how to fix it either. Haha

Eko always has such a wise expression on his face, I just love those photos! I am sure he and Scout will have a great visit! Dakota’s “oldest friend” happens to be a human, his Aunt Nancy who lives in Florida. He only sees her once or twice a year but he knows it’s her the second she hits the hallway outside our condo…he starts crying for her. Then, when she comes in he is ALL OVER HER and he isn’t like that with anyone else but us. No matter how long Aunt Nancy is away, (and it can be MONTHS), Dakota always knows when it is her!

aww… how ADORABLE is that?!… What an example the two of them are setting for us humans!…

My dog is old, he’s almost 18 (about +104 in human years, he’s kinda big), but he doesn’t have an ‘old’ friend. I can’t take him for walks anymore, as it’s become difficult and painful for him to walk (though he would go for it anytime, lol). But about 2 years ago, when we still went for walks, a little female puppy (stray) would just jump in front of him, then run, then come back, etc. I took her in, and tried to find a good home. When she was gone, he felt so miserable and depressed! I had her neutered, so no ‘female scents’ for him to ‘fall in love with’, but still… When the new owner took her back because they didn’t get along well, I decided to keep her. His joy when he saw her back home (and vice-versa) was so obvious! They are inseparable!!! She gets away with things he would NEVER let any other dog do: sleep on his bed, eat from his bowl, they are so cute. And in return, when she sees she’s about to get a treat from us, first she runs to him to alert and call him to get his THEN she takes her treat…. 🙂

  4. Aw, that’s so sweet. Boomer used to be like that with my mom’s dog Duke before he passed away but now it’s just Dottie that he’s a complete goofball with.

  5. Gizmo says:

Scout is beautiful…and the photo of Eko & Scout ‘battling’ looks a lot more like a love fest…so nice that Eko has such a great friend and that he gets to visit with her

That baby Eko picture is so cute! I love that they still get along so well even if they don’t see each other very often.

What a cute story! Unfortunately, our dog was a rescue so she doesn’t have “old friends” like Eko.

  8. dogdaz says:

Absolutely. Louise has 2 bff. Amy is her friend since they were puppies but they may only see each other once a month. Lulu always has to bite Amy’s ears but they do the same ritual everytime no matter how much time has past and then they play and play. Lulu’s boyfriend, Mojo, lives next door. And Louise and Sofie are different with thim then any other dog. Maybe it is because they walk and play together a lot, but they are very tight. Dogs remember. Love the stocking. Enjoy your holiday.

  9. Boomdeeadda says:

How awesome for Eko and Scout. Our Buddy use to love to visit with the neighbours dog Tia. Buddy was 9 and Tia was just a puppy, so she’d run circles around him but he’d try and keep up. Tia soon got to be to playful for our old dog, I felt sorry for her. She wanted to play with the old Buddy. It’s great if they’re close in age.

  10. Marcela says:

I am glad the two of them are such good friends. By the way, the only time a dog would mouth wrestle with another is when they trust each other for, yes that is a very vulnerable position for a dog.

  11. Clowie says:

Merry Christmas! Enjoy the holidays – see you next year!

  12. That’s so sweet! Love the pic of their paws:-)

  13. what a wonderful “best friends” picture… The dogs of my staff and the dog of my grandparents were enemies for their lifetime…it must be good to live together in perfect harmony ;o)

  14. Eleenie says:

Eko is one pretty shrewd dog, that’s exactly where I would place my christmas stocking too 😉 I adore the ‘paws’ photo 🙂

  15. […] I have hosted a number of pups in the apartment since we moved to Chicago.  My mom’s dog, Scout, was first.  Next we hosted Eko’s old pal Riley. And most recently we had my brother and his […]
