Rhodesian Ridgeback, pet adventure

Even after an adventurous day on the road Eko would unwind by keeping an eye on things outside our window

Thanks to a nice stroke of luck, my apartment in Chicago happens to be on the front of the building so that Eko can watch the world go by.  Eko is such a fixture at the window that a couple of neighbors once asked me about “that dog statue” in my window.  I recently moved a couch over near the window where Eko can now combine his two favorite activities – window watching and sunbathing.

Eko has been known to occasionally fall asleep on the job

And of course, I know immediately when Eko has spotted something good.  In this case, two of his dog friends out on a walk

It wasn’t until recently that I realized how much of a perk it is to have street-facing windows where Eko can pass the time.  And as if that wasn’t enough, I am also lucky enough to be the proud owner of a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

If you have a dog, you almost certainly own your own custom glass art too!

Is your pet a window aficionado?

Comments for Neighborhood Watchdog

  1. I’m a fan of window-TV too n and our windows are decorated like yours :o)

  2. Ours are great at window art – there is a dog-height band around all our windows. Eko is jolly lucky to have a street view, nothing better for keeping a fellow occupied all day, in between naps 😉

  3. I was going to ask how Eko keeps his neighbourhood watching so noseprint-free – especially after seeing that first picture. Then I scrolled down 😉 Juno is definitely a fixture at our front window – the same commuters wave to her every day! She did create custom glass art of herself once – a Lab silhouette – I’ll have to blog about it sometime! Keep up the good work, Eko!

A dog statue! I love it! Lola has her own ottoman by the window overlooking our back yard. She loves keeping an eye on her territory from a comfy perch. She doesn’t tend to put her nose on the window unless she’s chasing a fly, but then, we have very interesting window art.

  5. That was very nice of you to move the couch over to the windows for Eko, I’m sure he enjoys his spot and his job much more. We have a couch under one of our windows too and most of the day Boomer spends his time there sleeping and watching, Dottie even joins him from time to time.

Sadly we are on second floor so no. When I lived in Cleveland my first cat (Bobo) was a fixture in the window. I lived on first floor at that time. He was in the window so much that the maintenance crew used to walk by and say “Hi Bobo”….it was adorable 🙂

  7. Great photos! Love the window frame/chin rest 😆 Our lurcher has just discovered the fun she can have wiping her nose over windows – she prefers ones that have just been cleaned so we can all really appreciate her latest handiwork! 🙂

  8. Ingrid says:

I have some of that custom glass on my patio slider…..wouldn’t have it any other way 🙂

  9. Bridget says:

Your couch is so deep that Ecko’s truncated torso looks quite surreal (the shot where he is asleep on the job).

  10. Jan says:

Nose Art. Its called Nose Art, Will. My Welsh Terrier, Rusty, and my friends Westies all create great Nose Art.

Rusty and I read your blog everyday. Great job! Rusty especially loves your videos.

  11. emma says:

Mom bought a place for the cat to sit on to watch out the front window but I figured that out and took it over so she had to buy a bench so we can both sit there and yes, I do busy myself with lots of nose art as well. All the neighbors love to see me in my window 🙂

  12. writetowag says:

Yes, they are quite the artists…especially in the car…Love how you prop yourself up on that one window sill Eko…You are a great watchdog!!!!

  13. I love Eko! my boyz love to look out the wire screen door because they are too lazy to go outside…..:)

  14. onebluedog says:

I bet Eko is so excited to have his couch by the window now too! What a good idea 🙂 I don’t have too much interest in looking out the windows; not too much goes on where we live. But I do like to make nose art on the windows in the car 🙂

  15. kdkh says:

Ha ha ha. Our car windows are the worst! Nose prints everywhere!

  16. Marcela says:

Lol. Excellent and funny post as always. Eko is so handsome and I think its ok if he falls asleep on the job, don’t you think? Yes, I am quite familiar with that art work. Alex and the doggies that stay with me are very artistic and leave me plenty of art work on my windows:)

  17. harrispen says:

Millie love to look out our back windows where she can watch the birds on our feeders. Pretty soon she will also discover that the chipmunks frequent that area too.

    Cindy

  18. caitlin says:

So sweet! None of the windows are really low enough for Chick to look out, but she loves bathing in the sun, especially when it’s warmer out and she can lay near the balcony door.

  19. We have left paw prints for our mum on her patio 🙂

  20. Voldemama says:

Eko is the canine version of the city grandmas of the fifties and sixties who watched over their streets hours on end. A noble profession. If only Eko could tell us what he sees. I know my grandma could give a full accounting of everybodys business.

  21. So cute. Litchi does the exactly the same, sitting on the couch, resting her head on the back and watching everything going on outside. They definitely make the best window art!

  22. Eleenie says:

Heehee, yes! But it’s our car windows that have all the artwork (and drool!) Eko is so lucky to have a room with a view 🙂

  23. Gizmo says:

Gizmo’s nap spot is the top of the couch by the window where he can see all the walkers on the path around the lake across the street…He keeps close watch and lets me know when anyone interesting goes by
