The Art Of Racing In The Rain

April showers have certainly done a number on Chicago.  With a few exceptions, the sky here has remained gray and the rain is seemingly unending.  For Eko that means the dog parks are empty, the beach is cold and life is boring! Can you tell

Can you tell Eko’s just a bit bored?

It’s another stormy day here, but  we decided to take a page from The Art of Racing in the Rainone of my favorite recent reads.  Denny and his dog Enzo remind me a lot of Eko and myself.  Anyone can race when conditions are perfect, but only a few have what it takes to race in the rain.  The park was empty and the rain was coming down hard but that didn’t stop Eko and I from having a blast.

When I race Eko, the only way I have a chance is if I cheat!  I get him going one way and then quickly turn around to get a head start

It is only a moment before Eko realizes the ruse and he’s after me like a bolt of lightning

I made the mistake of looking back, thinking I had outrun Eko…

But nope, he was hot on my heels!

I made one last effort to escape, but Eko tagged my hip – our signal that the jig is up and it’s my turn to chase him

Rain or shine, nothing make me happier than to see Eko smile

Did I spend the last hour removing multiple layers of mud from Eko? Yup. Was it worth it?  Absolutely!  On the next rainy day wherever you are, I highly recommend you read The Art of Racing in the Rain. And on the next rainy day after that… well, get out there and race in the rain!  Or at least watch your dog do it, it is always good for a big smile.  Unless you just gave them a bath, that is.
