The Many Faces Of Our Pets

As is the case with most pets, Eko’s first language is not English.  Body language is the lingua franca for our pets and so we all become experts in the subtleties of our pets’ movements.  I bet each and every one of you has had a friend ask, “How did you know your cat was hungry?” or “How did you know your dog needed to go out?”  And I bet almost everyone has at least once answered, “I just know!”

While I could write a thesis on the language of Eko’s tail or go on at length about what his different stretches mean, my favorite part of “speaking Eko” is reading his expressive face.  There is one for every occasion.

No matter how many times I say it, the word “treat” will forever bring this earnest expression of awe to Eko’s face

Like Michael Jordan, Eko’s signature move when playing is sticking his tongue out to the side.  It usually happens right after he realizes that his plan to get another dog to chase him worked

Of course, plans don’t always work out and thus we have the “Uh oh, he caught me!” face above

The signature disgruntled look

And the look that Eko uses most?  Probably the “Will, I can’t believe I have to put up with you!”

Well, this is what it looks like in my head at least!

Does your pet have any signature looks that you know exactly what they mean?

Comments for The Many Faces Of Our Pets

  1. Victoria says:

Muffin tilts her head when i talk about a bath – like “what you talking about” and Rigby just looks like he is so sad when i bring up a bath. When i say sit -i get a nose nudge and a look like “ok where is it” from Muffin while Rigby patiently sits and waits for his treat. When muffin wants a belly rub she stares at me with a soul-full expression and moans…Rigby just looks at me like “hey aren’t you going to pet me too” –

  2. Dakota will COMPLETELY fixate on my face and not break eye contact when he is on a quest for a bone 🙂

  3. Sage says:

It’s that look of hope and expectancy when the shoes go on!

  4. Ogee says:

Jackson stares intently at the stuffed duck on the shelf every morning and purrs like a baby tiger until he gets it! 🙂
I don’t know which is the bigger goofball…Eko or you…but I sure enjoy you both!

  5. Great post! Yes, the signature look of our boy is always accomapied by a toy. The larger the toy the most significant the meaning 😉

  6. Misaki says:

Love how expressive Eko is. I have too main looks – excited and sad. They both work really well:-)

  7. labradorkay says:

Beautiful dog, and wonderful shots! 🙂

  8. emma says:

Love the photo where he looks like he is performing chiropractic duties on the golden! I learned the king’s English first where I was born in the UK, then I move to Germany where I learned mom’s American English and German, so add that to dog and I have 4 but no matter what the language mom always knows what I want and I know what most people want no matter what they say, it is in the body language and face mostly.

  9. Oh yes, there are many looks in our house. Boomer is really expressive because of his eyebrows I swear he can speak with them while Dottie is really good letting us know what she wants or in some cases doesn’t want with her eyes.

The pic with Eko and the other doggie in play is hilarious indeed!!!! Eko is a sweetie…Trev tilts his head to the side when we ask if he wants a treat…Then there is his famous laser beam eye stare for ALL things food related!!!!

  11. Marcela says:

Lol. Eko is so, so adorable and handsome. With a face like that is hard to say no:)

  12. Jura says:

His often furrowed brow really helps add to his expressiveness! Tala has ridiculous bat ears which go every which way and can change her look from alert and focused hunter to passive wimp depending on what other dogs she is around….

  13. Love this, Will! And such fabulous photos! 🙂

  14. Tya Khan says:

  15. Great pictures! I like the disgruntled look! Oh and you have something on your nose Eko :o) I think if my body language had a name it would be slang :o)

  16. Clowie says:

Great photos! Eko has an expressive face.

  17. Boomdeeadda says:

HA, I love the sand on the nose look. Eko has such an expressive face. Dogs seem a lot easier to read than cats. Or maybe cats are so fickled, they feel entitled to change their mind half way through any one request. You know that saying ‘dogs have owners, cats have servants’? There’s really something to that one, LOL.
