With flash flood warnings in effect, last night was perfect for staying indoors

Last night I sat on the couch – warm, dry and content.  At least I was warm, dry and content until I heard the alarm sound and was called to arms as a member of the Night Watch.

My alarm sound is Eko sitting and whining that he wants to go outside

In every home with a dog, there is at least one member of the Night Watch.  The person who takes the dog out at night no matter what.  Rain, snow, alien invasion, it doesn’t matter – the dog still needs to go out!

Of course, Eko’s favorite tree is down the block across the street, so there is no hiding from the elements for us

From my conversations with fellow members of the Night Watch I have found that we generally have the same uniform – a rain jacket, old boots/sandals and some beat up clothes we can leave by the door when we return from the field.

Nighttime rainy scenes are nowhere near as romantic as Hollywood would lead you to believe

The Night Watch is not a noble job, but it is a necessary one.  We do our duty so that our pets may do theirs.  So today I would like to salute members of the Night Watch the world over – your work is appreciated!

Comments for A Salute To The Night Watch

  1. Ah! We stepped down from night watch and installed a dog door. So much better than having to go out at night. But when you live in the city it is what we do!

  2. emma says:

Hats off to the night watch. No one can believe that mom takes us out in all weather to do our duty since we have a fenced yard but we don’t want our yard to be a bathroom so off we go day in, day out, rain or shine, hot or cold…it is what we dogs do with our mom at our house and we all just do it without really thinking about it because it is just what we do.

  3. Ingrid says:

In our last custom home, Bear had his own room complete with doggy door and dog run. One of the beauties of being a homebuilding….get to design a home for the WHOLE family. He and I both miss those days. Stay dry!

  4. bigdogzola says:

Well done Eko – excellent that you have your human so well trained for Night Watch duties..nice work. RR Zola

  5. onebluedog says:

Yay for the Night Watch! Lucky for my mom and dad, I hate the rain and so I’m very quick in bad weather. Those nighttime pictures are really cool 🙂

  6. caitlin says:

I’m definitely not on Night Watch – that job is for the bf!

  7. No Night Watch here. We are thankful to have a nice large fenced yard where Chancy has his favorite spots. All I have to do is open the door to let him out and again to let him in. Although at night he won’t go off the porch unless I stand on the porch and wait for him to visit all his favorite spots. lol Hugs and nose kisses

  8. Tiffany F. says:

I’m only on night watch when my husband is out of town… which is often. =)

  9. you have just made my husband’s day….he is a proud member of “The Night Watch!!”

  10. Boomdeeadda says:

I salute you Will. It looks scary out there. When I had to walk our Buddy in the dark (6 months out of the year) I would always sing as I went in case anything thought of jumping out at us in the dark. I knew my singing would freak ‘it’ out and chase it away.

  11. Zena says:

Hee hee – love it! You are very noble. The Help is lazy, she’s got a garden for us and kicks us out by ourselves in the rain!

  12. My boys are big babies, they hate to get their feet wet! It get out, get done & get back in!

  13. Oh, the night watch is a lovely job here in Scandinavia at this time of year when it is bright light until at least 10PM! But I promise you, as your friend grows older, the night shifts get shorter! A 13 my dear friend is down to the closest bush and then quickly back home!

  14. Marcela says:

Poor Will. I am very lucky because when we have horrible weather in Maryland, Alex learned to use our small backyard to do #1 and #2. The next day, I go and pick up #2 and take it to the garbage. It comes so handy when its raining like crazy or snowing or whenever the weather is just not fit for dogs or humans to be out.

  15. Clowie says:

    It’s a very important job!

  16. I’m glad to have aback yard – my mom wouldn’t go outside with me by night – not for agolden castle. That could be an uncomfy night for me (or for her)

  17. Dottie Wells and Tuffy "The Fat Cat" Wells says:

Viva la cat litter boxes! But, now I am helping a neighbor out with doggy duty – or as you call it – night watch. The pup’s name is “Treacherous”, for real. She stays cooped up in a small enclosed patio until I get there. Some people shouldn’t have pets. But Trecherous belongs to my neighbor’s son who is in the hospital, so I get the pleasure, and Tuffy always comes out with me, just to keep an eye on how much attention I am giving to a dog, no doubt. They are beginning to get used to each other. Tuffy has always been pretty good with dogs, but wish us luck anyway.
