I did my best to prevent Eko from learning THE secret.  First I distracted him with some food

While Eko ate, I snuck upstairs

However, Eko is quite the eater, so he caught me going up to my room

Luckily I prepared for this contingency and left a box halfway up the stairs to distract Eko

The plan worked like a charm!  Eko brought the box downstairs and happily shredded it.  However, after a while Eko again trotted upstairs to investigateRhodesian Ridgeback, pet adventure, petcentric, marking our territory, dog blog But again I was prepared – at the top of the steps was a squeak toy

Unfortunately, the lion  was not as durable as I thought and Eko quickly tore it apart. Despite the above photo, it turned out that Eko would be the one with a broken heart.  Before I could get to the door Eko trotted in my room and discovered the horrible truth

Rhodesian Ridgeback, pet adventure, petcentric, marking our territory, dog blogI was caught packing for a trip without Eko!  He couldn’t even look at me Rhodesian Ridgeback, pet adventure, petcentric, marking our territory, dog blog“Oh the dogmanity! Will, how could you do this!?”

I leave for my college reunion today and unfortunately it is not a pet-friendly event. I won’t be gone long and Eko will be in great hands the next couple days, but that certainly hasn’t stopped him from laying down next to my bag and moping. Do you have to keep THE secret – that you are leaving – from your pet to prevent them from moping?  If so, do you have any tricks or workarounds – I’m up for suggestions!

We’ve NEVER been able to keep THE SECRET from Steffi. Even if just one of us is leaving, she doesn’t know that and it’s very difficult to explain the concept to her. She starts shaking like a leaf.

  2. There’s the rub. You know Eko will be in fine hands but you feel guilty. Fast forward to the glorious reception you will have on your return, knowing full well he’s had a blast 😀

  3. rumpydog says:

Secret? As if anyone could keep THAT secret! pfffftttt!!!!

  4. Judy says:

My dog Charlie ignores me for DAYS after I leave her!! She really pouts!!

  5. onebluedog says:

    Oh no!! Poor Eko 🙁

I don’t mind too much when my mom and dad go on trips because I get to go to this cool place where I run around and play with other pups all day long 🙂 But I am still pretty excited to see my family when they come to pick me up and then I sleep for about 3 days!

  6. Eve says:

Good luck with leaving. The Juley dog doesn’t seem to mind much if one stays home, but be prepared for the return! It’s usually results in a very excited dog around here!

  7. Tiffany F. says:

Oh noooo. I wonder what havoc he’ll reak on you now that he knows!! Tonto gets depressed when my husband starts packing for a trip (He hates that square thing with wheels!) and acts so down in the dumps the entire time he’s gone!

  8. Oh, we feel for you sweet Eko and we hope the time passes quickly and your sweet Will’s time away will seem short. We can never keep a secret from Chancy he seems to know everything sometimes even before we do. Be safe and have a good time Will. Hugs and nose kisses

  9. kdkh says:

I devote my efforts to explaining how long I’ll be gone, what happens to them (Who takes care of them), and reassuring them that I will return.

  10. catchatcaren says:

I wish I had something that would help Dakota figured it out when I was on my way out the door lol. I didn’t pack in a room where he could see the suitcase so he didn’t realize I was going until I was actually gone.

  11. labradorkay says:

Oh deary me! I don’t know who I send sympathy to the most… Will or Eko… Eko or Will…

  12. Oh my gosh that face says it all!

  13. I never say, “bye”, I always tell the puppies, “We will be back, don’t worry!” 🙂

  14. Boomdeeadda says:

    “Oh the dogmanity!!”, LOL
I guess you used all the tricks I would have. When we went to work from the lake, we left Buddy on his pillow in our attached garage with a cookie. He usually had it ate before the door came all the way down and sometimes limbo’d his way out at the nth moment. We’d have to park and open the side door to put him back in 🙁 Slowed us down a bit but it was a chance for an extra smooch, win/win. Have fun at the reunion! They’ll all be jealous of your fab blog.

  15. Emmadog says:

Oh, that is bad. I just hate it when mom gets that suitcase out but luckily it is not very often. I always hope to see my bag come out too but sometimes it doesn’t happen. Poor Eko. I am sure he will be fine.

  16. Zena says:

Nothing works….. we know….. we always know and we will make you pay!

  17. joanb49 says:

Nope, can’t keep the secret at all. Chloe follows me from room to room so as soon as I go for the suitcase she knows what’s going on. She loves both her aunties that sit for us, but there’s no one like Mom & Dad. I leave a new toy that she gets after we leave and about 3 pages of instructions! I know she’ll be well looked after but still feel maximum guilt.

  18. Ogee says:

The face comes out the moment the luggage comes out. Have fun. I’m pretty sure Eko will be well-spoiled in your absence.

  19. Made me laugh out loud. Of course I have to hide it. I don’t bring the suitcase out till the very last minute because from then on Slimdoggy is glued to my hip – won’t let me out of his sight. Thanks for the fun post!

  20. gdjoken says:

Oh wow, yes, we have the same problem! Every time they see a suitcase one of ours sits there whining, and the other runs from room to room wagging his tail and wiggling. *sigh* Always tough to leave them behind!

  21. Can’t stop laughing at the Eko “distractions” in the middle and at the top of the stairs! Too funny!

  22. I’ve nominated you and Eko for the WordPress Family Award. Enjoy 🙂

  23. PigLove says:

aaww bless Eko’s heart. Mom usually tells me to warn me WAY before the event. I kind of know because since you can ‘board’ me at the kennels it does take some arranging to do for a pig sitter. And trust me, they are FEW and far between. So I do know ahead of time and it doesn’t happen often but yeah I do kind of give her the silent treatment afterwards for a while. XOXO – Bacon

  24. aww that’s hard. I hate things wihout me… I hope you are back soon….

  25. That sad face! Hurry back, Will! 🙂

  26. Whitney B. says:

Your pictures of Eko are always fantastic – I wish I could capture my dogs like that!

  27. Pack at the very last minute, and accept that you will be on a major guilt trip while you’re gone. Call often and speak to disgruntled dog while friend/family member holds phone to dog’s ear. No other advice.

  28. Misaki says:

Hope you have a great trip. When mummy and daddy stay away for the night nanny and grampy take care of me and I love it, I’m sure Eko will have a great time and get spoiled lots too:-)

  29. Have fun at your reunion Will……Keeping secrets is tough but you sure gave it a good try with the distractions for Eko…..I have a harder time keeping another secret from Sam – that’s the “I’m taking you to the vet today” secret! 😀 Enjoy your getaway!
