As you may or may not know, I am the proud owner of one of the most advanced pieces of  workout technology this planet has ever seen:
Now that summer is (mostly) here, it means that my four-legged workout machine will be more eager than ever to get out and try new things.  I always enjoy a good challenge and thanks to the Pro Plan P5 app I have found the perfect way for Eko and I to get some great exercise and training.

p5 1 The P5 app offers customized tracking for your dog’s training progress in everything from obedience to dock diving

While all the training options are great, unfortunately I don’t have regular access to an agility course or a dock for practice.  And so I was drawn to the flying disc section of the app which has step-by-step instructions to have your pup flying through the air.  Unlike many dogs, Eko for some reason does not jump to catch toys or treats when I toss them.  He prefers to let them fall and then pounce.  I have always wanted to teach him to fly and now I have the tools to do so.  I don’t think it will be easy, but I hope that with the P5 app and some dedicated training I can have Eko catching discs by the end of the summer.

One day soon?

Not sure that we will get to this level (and not sure my back could support this) but I’m dreaming big

I hope to post updates/videos about our progress every two weeks or so throughout the summer.  I’m sure the first few attempts will be good for a laugh.

Anyone else have any big summer time pet adventure plans?  This flying disc challenge is item #1 on our summertime bucket list, but I’m hoping to add many more!

Comments for Teaching Eko To Fly

  1. Ogee says:

This made my day…but be careful out there. We have a doggie ruptured disc to prove that there are limits to a dog’s fun…even if they don’t recognize them.

  2. The ME 365 is a product that will keep running and running. We’re not sure how well the owners will fare but they sure will be tested to the extremes 😉

  3. I want such an ME 365 too! Have fun on your “flying lessons” . Thanks for a great post!

  4. Victoria says:

Actually i have two dogs who jump in the air to catch frisbees – so i’ll try another on of the options.

  5. OMD HILARIOUS!! I need to get out there with Dakota more! Oh I LOVED the “mumbling” disclaimer at the end! Hilarious!

  6. don’t know if you are eligible, but I just nominated you for a number of categories for the Pettie Awards! You deserve to win!

  7. gdjoken says:

Ha ha ha, love the video. Good luck with your training attempts this summer!

  8. Jennifer Ward says:

Will- Laughing so hard- my sides hurt!!! We’ve got a T 365 here. Just opened the pool & Taylor still is determined to hop the sides when the ladder is up. She did that as a pup last summer. Oh- Happy Summer! ps You could probably qualify for the Iron Man Triathlon with your M.E. 365 workouts 🙂 Eko is awesome-

  9. Zena says:

The pup pounces too but as he’s still a pup and growing they don’t want him jumping at this point.

  10. Emmadog says:

We are not as active in the summer since it is almost too warm. Swimming and more swimming is my main plan!

  11. Sage says:

Your video was HILARIOUS!! EKO, you are the best pushup helper ever! I personally don’t care much for those flying disks…give me a ball and I’ll fly high. Oh, and I luvluvluv agility.

  12. Steven/Buddy says:

    Good luck with that.
With Buddy he will catch the ball in the air, But with a frisbee he will catch it once and thats it. Then its chase him around to get it, or let him chew it ? Well Buddy almost always win this One. I have tried all differnt kinds of frisbee’s and he wins.
But I will check out the app to see if I can learn something from it. Thanks

  13. Well, I thought I had big plans but, in truth, teaching your dog to fly out does any of mine 🙂

  14. Phoenix says:

Took me a minute to “get” that Eko is what you’re talking about as “one of the most advanced pieces of workout technology this planet has ever seen”. I’ve got one of those too! And funny enough, I found this blog through a Purina app, and very glad I did.

As far as agility goes, if you’ve got a yard and a hardware store nearby, you can make jumps and weave poles with PVC pipe and connectors. They’re also lightweight and easy to carry to the park. There are plenty of instructions online, or look at the equipment and fiddle around to see what works. That’s what we’ve done and it’s been wildly successful.

  15. onebluedog says:

BOL, that app looks cool Will, but not nearly as cool as M.E. 365!! That was our most favorite video yet!

Now if only we could order an Eko for real…

  16. Misaki says:

Wow, good luck, can’t wait to hear your progress!

  17. You are so creative! Loved the idea of an M.E. 365. You’re truly on to something. What a sweet, well behaved pooch you have.

  18. sisubeads says:

hahahahahahahhahaha and no I did not read your post! yet!
