If you guessed “Eko with all his stuff packed neatly away” you would be right, but if you guessed “wishful thinking” you would be even more right!

Eko doesn’t have a lot of toys and bones, but I swear it is like he strategically places them on the floor exactly where he knows I’m going to walk.  It’s especially bad in the mornings when I’m not fully awake.

I have been wobbled by the wobbler

And Eko’s tennis ball has sent me rolling over myself

The master of disaster with the tools of his trade

I do my best to keep Eko’s toys organized, but they never stay in one place for long. And of course as soon as I put the toys away it just happens to be the exact moment Eko wants to take them all out and play.

It only occurred to me recently that I might be able to save myself some time (and twisted ankles) if I taught Eko the “clean up” command I have seen other dogs learn. I’m off to start on some research, but does anyone have experience teaching their dog to put toys away?  I would love to hear any suggestions and recommendations.  Thanks!

Probably not the way you want to go – but with two dogs the way they put away their toys is to start fighting with them and then the trained human (me) takes the toy and puts it away….

  2. We had a bad adventure with a bone too – wow that hurts when you step on this chewed thingies with your naked foot. We always find pieces of the victims in our bed. But we will bear it as long as we will not find dead animals on our pillow.

  3. Dakota doesn’t know how to put toys away but he sure knows how to take them out! Your place looks spotless compared to our dog toy minefield!! BOL!

  4. PigLove says:

Snorts – let me know how it works for you keeping them all in one place. I have a bunch of toys – all of them resemble pigs for some reason, I’m not sure why. Mommy tries to keep them all in my pig box. That works out maybe for a nano-second before me and the purr things pull them all out and play again… over and over. XOXO – Bacon

  5. Isn’t it horrid stepping on a hard toy! Luckily ours prefer soft toys. The worst we’ve experienced is stepping barefoot on ‘presents’ left by our cats 🙁

  6. I’m afraid of my toybox, so Mom picks out a few toys for me each day. I play and make a collection of them on the couch. I can’t clean up, because that would involve proximity to the deadly toybox…

  7. Paws To Talk says:

Margot: I literally just stepped on a squeaky toy before I sat down to read this! Bella, DiDi and Toby always “reorganize” the toy basket after I have picked up the toys. I wish I could know why they want the toys to be all over the floor!

  8. Mummy insists whee are spreading out. Packets of everything everywhere. The poop and food flinging across the carpet particularly annoys her but whee have to keep her on her toes . . . or keep the food and poop on them at least. Her screaming “Ewwwwww” is the highlight of our morning when she comes to give us breakfast!

    Happy Wednesday

heheh I’m the same as Eko, my toys are like an assault course across the floor.
If you figure out a clean up command, mummy would love to find out how to teach it. Though I don’t think that’s going toi have any effect on me tbh hahahaha!

  10. Emmadog says:

I know some dogs do pick up on command. We don’t play much with toys anymore, so it is not an issue, but when my friends stay with us every toy is out and strewn all around the house…makes Mom a bit nuts!

  11. Sage says:

Good luck with that one! I think it’s more like they’ve trained us.

I have in fact not mastered this yet. Petals has a dozen toys all over the house. I did she this fabulous dog just the other day. His trainer Heather must be a mad genius because Jesse is so clever (& cute). Check it out

Just think it is double the trouble with two dogs!

Good luck with that. We will be reading to learn how it goes.

I’ve tried to teach Chloe to put her toys away but she always talks back & jumps up on the couch, ignoring me. Then I put them away. I’m well trained.
