My Floor Is A Dog Toy Minefield

Can you guess what this is a photo of?

If you guessed “Eko with all his stuff packed neatly away” you would be right, but if you guessed “wishful thinking” you would be even more right!

Eko doesn’t have a lot of toys and bones, but I swear it is like he strategically places them on the floor exactly where he knows I’m going to walk.  It’s especially bad in the mornings when I’m not fully awake.

I have been wobbled by the wobbler

Slipped on a stuffy

Introduced the bones in my feet to the bones (and antler) on the floor

And Eko’s tennis ball has sent me rolling over myself

I do my best to keep Eko’s toys organized, but they never stay in one place for long. And of course as soon as I put the toys away it just happens to be the exact moment Eko wants to take them all out and play.

It only occurred to me recently that I might be able to save myself some time (and twisted ankles) if I taught Eko the “clean up” command I have seen other dogs learn. I’m off to start on some research, but does anyone have experience teaching their dog to put toys away?  I would love to hear any suggestions and recommendations.  Thanks!

  1. I know some dogs do pick up on command. We don’t play much with toys anymore, so it is not an issue, but when my friends stay with us every toy is out and strewn all around the house…makes Mom a bit nuts!

  2. heheh I’m the same as Eko, my toys are like an assault course across the floor.
If you figure out a clean up command, mummy would love to find out how to teach it. Though I don’t think that’s going toi have any effect on me tbh hahahaha!

  3. Mummy insists whee are spreading out. Packets of everything everywhere. The poop and food flinging across the carpet particularly annoys her but whee have to keep her on her toes . . . or keep the food and poop on them at least. Her screaming “Ewwwwww” is the highlight of our morning when she comes to give us breakfast!

  4. Margot: I literally just stepped on a squeaky toy before I sat down to read this! Bella, DiDi and Toby always “reorganize” the toy basket after I have picked up the toys. I wish I could know why they want the toys to be all over the floor!

  5. I’m afraid of my toybox, so Mom picks out a few toys for me each day. I play and make a collection of them on the couch. I can’t clean up, because that would involve proximity to the deadly toybox…
