What Do Pets Know About Being Comfortable That We Don’t?

It’s no secret that Eko is a master of finding the most comfortable spot in the room. One of Eko’s favorite maneuvers is to split the couch cushions into a cozy pillow top bed.

He is also a master of adding a blanket to his bedding to achieve maximum comfort

Normally I am envious of Eko’s luxurious accommodations, he almost always seems to find the perfect spot to snooze.  However, there are other times when I just can’t conceive why Eko would ever choose the spots he does.

No pillows, no blankets, feet hanging off the side – but for some reason Eko will sometimes sleep like this on the stairs for a couple hours

Not only that, but some nights Eko will skip his bed all together.  The other night he pulled his covers off the bed and decided to camp out in the corner

I know Eko is not the only one who operates on both ends of the comfy-spectrum.  I have seen plenty of pets walk past comfortable spots in favor of contorting themselves in an uncomfortable alternative.  Which then raises the question, what do they know that we don’t?  I’m not eager to sleep on the floor next to Eko, so does anyone have any guesses as to why some pets do this?

Comments for What Do Pets Know About Being Comfortable That We Don’t?

  1. Whee have no idea why doggies do it but sometimes whee don’t like the heat of our cosies and lie on plastic tiles or something instead. On the other hand Mummy has no idea why, when she puts out blankets and tents, whee choose to sleep on the paving stones even on cool days when running in the garden. Sometimes whee sleep with our legs bent right back behind us which always makes Mummy cringe

Maybe it’s so whee can watch things better or see all escapes? Maybe so we can make sure whee know when you are doing anything? Maybe something else

Mummy is as mystified as you but us pets have to have some secrets!

  2. I think the secret is to spin around 87 times first :o) btw: the place on the stairs is as annoying for humans as the place in the door frame :o)

  3. I have no clue. Dakota has always shunned beds for either the rug or the wood floor. I have tried bed after bed but he wants nothing to do with any of them. I always thought it was due to his having long thick fur, but Eko has a short coat so that shot that theory to hell! lol!

  4. Eko is a real sweet heart….He is so cuddly…..My naughty Dalmatian is not very different though….

  5. What was comfy yesterday isn’t necessarily comfy today……Sam’s a stair sleeper too and I “get” why he’s there in the daytime in a sun puddle but at night? I guess I envy their ability to be comfortable just about anywhere – I often wish I was that way when I’m traveling and miss my own bed!

Beats me. Sage will sleep under the desk with her chin on a rung of the chair. Now, that CAN’T be comfortable.

  7. Boomer is king of finding a comfy spot which is why he’s started sleeping in bed with my hubby and I at night. Since we’re still waiting on some furniture to arrive he seeks the most comfy spot.

Dottie is a whole other story. She likes to sleep on her beds, in chairs and on the couch but sometimes the kitchen floor where it’s cool. Lately we’ve had some storms and she’s been sleeping in a corner because she’s been spooked. When we put her bed in the corner to make her more comfortable she sleeps beside it… that I don’t get.

  8. Victoria says:

Rigs like to sleep on the couch, upside down with his legs in the air and big muffin sleeps on the AC vents or on the couch curled up in a little ball w/her head hanging off of the couch……i think they just choose a spot that is the most comfortable temp and easiest place to stretch out or roll up….

  9. Emmadog says:

I love soft and cushy, I have my various beds around the house that I like to sleep in and I rarely sleep on the hardwood floor. My sister Katie, on the other hand, prefers the hard surfaces to sleep which makes no sense really.

  10. My dog is comfy as long as he has a place to rest his chin, whether it be the bottom shelf of our coffee table, a shoebox in my closet, or an armrest on the couch. He looks silly, but he likes it!

My dog Laney does the same thing! I find myself laughing at your posts because they are so true! Every one of them is spot on to what my little “dog-child” does. My favorite is what I’ve heard called the “ray of death.” A patch of sunlight seems to collect sleeping animals and makes for a good picture 🙂

What a cuddle bum!!!! Eko, you totally have it made!!!!

  13. harrispen says:

Our pups never leave the bed at night. I guess they prefer the comfort and like to sleep pressed up against us to make sure we don’t leave.

  14. Kuruk says:

Sometimes I have to sleep in a strategic spot where I can watch my Mama! Wooooowoooooooo!

  15. Dottie Wells and Tuffy "The Fat Cat" Wells says:

The answer as to how our pets can be comfortable just about anywhere is very simple. Pure joy! If we could learn that . . . wow! They also know that they have no worries. God bless them all, and you, too, Will for filling that need with Eko.

  16. Jura says:

As I read this post I noticed that Tala had migrated from her blanket on the sofa to the cashmere one we left out last night by accident. Clearly a discerning hound….

  17. Sometimes I think she’s just too lazy to move but she needs to stretch her neck a bit after sleeping curled up, so the head inevitably lands on the floor hanging off the bed. Of course, she always chooses a spot where she can supervise me from.
