Understandbly, Eko misses our backyard in Montana

Montana is home to a vast amount of wildlife, and while Eko was out romping in the yard he discovered that one buck left behind a piece of last season’s fashion. The buck’s loss was Eko’s gain.

A delicious antler was the reward for our intrepid explorer

The antler came to our new apartment with us and for the past twelve months it has kept the little guy busy

Unlike some of the other bones I bought him, the antler remained a fixture of Eko’s attention.  He doesn’t always chomp on it, but he will consistently go back to it at least a few times a week.  The antler is great for me because it doesn’t smell and it isn’t messy. Most toys I buy Eko are lucky to last twelve minutes, but check out how the antler is doing after twelve months.

The two prongs are gone, but the main part of the antler remains

Both Eko and the antler are still going strong!

If you haven’t bought your pup an antler before I highly recommend you look into it.  They are fairly expensive but I can tell you they are more than worth the investment.  I will definitely buy Eko another antler…if he ever gets through this one that is!

  1. Kuruk says:

    I wuvwuvwuv antlers! Woooooowoooooooo!

  2. Hey Eko, are your ears ready for lift off? Antlers are the #1 on my wishlist, but my mom is a chicken that I could hurt my teeth (she is nuts and has NO clue what dogs-teeth can do)

  3. Mags Corner says:

We have heard about the antlers and how much dogs love them. Guess we will have to look into getting one or two for the doggies here. Eko loves his as we can see. Hugs and nose kisses

  4. I’ve thought about getting an antler for Dottie because she’s a crazy strong chewer (this is the girl that destroys and eats the hardest of Black Kongs) but I’m afraid she’ll break a tooth. I’ve heard some dogs don’t do well with them. Have you heard anything?

  5. Mustang.Koji says:

Well, I’ll be darned! And what a photo-journalistic post!

    Thanks Will & Eko
I never thought or knew that an deer antler is safe or good for dogs ?
But Buddy has a stash of rawhide bones, he gets one every night after dinner and off to the bedroom with it. But 98% of the time he only works on it for 15-20 mins and thats it. Then it goes in his stash of bones in the corner.
So maybe this might intrigued Buddy more ? It’s worth a shot ?

  7. Marcela says:

Thanks for the info. I had a pet parent recommend it to, but I was not sure. Next trip to the store I’ll get Alex an Antler, but as always, I’d supervise:)

  8. Once again Dakota proves how strange he is. I had bought him antlers over a year ago….ZERO interest 🙂
Maybe Eko liked his because they were totally real?

  9. Our hoomans clubbed together and bought a family friend’s dog an antler. It lasted 18 months. And considering the dog was a great dane, efurryone was impressed. They plan to invest in another one for him at Christmas. They are well worth it

We love antlers. Our mom buys us the split elk antlers from http://www.yellowstoneantlers.com/ and they are not very expensive. Much cheaper than what you pay in the store.

  11. Dottie Wells and Tuffy "The Fat Cat" Wells says:

Will, be especially vigilant of splinters in the antlers. When a piece breaks off it can have some bad intestinal results. Otherwise, I know Eko will be fine. You’re such a good dad.

  12. Emmadog says:

Antlers have been a life saver with Bailie. She is teething, so whenever she starts to chew something Mom gives her an antler, and she gnaws on it for about five minutes and then falls asleep. It is a miracle. I enjoy gnawing on them too occasionally, but for the puppy they are great!

  13. Antlers are great chews! Only seen one of my pup pals who after years of regularly gnawing on them has little rounded nubs for teeth. But that’s the only case I’ve seen.

  14. we bought a small bit of ziwipeak antler for Donna before… she like to take her chewables to her bed to chew and it left stains and bits of gristle on her bed… so I thought it was messy… is there a difference between commercial antlers versus antlers you pick up in the wild?

  15. Gina says:

Fiona and Lapsi loved them but it made their farts unbearable!

  16. What a great idea! Would never have thought about that — they chew on bones, so why not antlers? Although it won’t be easy to find deer antlers here in Ft. Myers Beach! 😉 BTW, Eko is very handsome! If he ever decides to bring you to the beach, check us out — our beach house is dog friendly. http://www.cocoplumbeachhouse.com

  17. Misaki says:

that looks like a fab antler!

  18. Nightshade says:

Eko really seems to be “in wuv” with the antler, that’s for sure! It’s not a bad idea for our two mobsters… Maybe something to put under the Christmas tree for them in a couple of months! 😉

  19. scarlybobs says:

Our two love antlers too, although they’ve never been lucky enough to have one that big!! In fact we just bought Zoey one for her birthday next month 🙂

  20. Shoot…I wish we had bought one for Arri when we were in Yellowstone this summer. We saw them in a lot of stores, but we always questioned if Arri would like it and if it would be harmful to her. Next time…

  21. Kelly says:

Did you do anything special to the antler, or just pick it up off the ground and bring it home? We find antlers on our hikes sometimes, and I’ve seen the antlers in pet stores, but I couldn’t decide if it was OK to just bring a “free range” antler back home or I’d have to prepare/dog-proof it somehow.
