Eko and this friendly Pyrenees said hello and went for a quick trot together, but afterwards Eko went back to the water. He was uninterested in an extended playdate
But when this little pup showed up, Eko had her chasing him up and down the water
Eko gets especially excited when there are puppies around. You can’t tell him he’s too big to be playing with these guys!
On walks, Eko normally gives most dogs a quick sniff hello, but I couldn’t pull him away from fawning over this little puppy. I swear Eko was a doting grandmother in a past life
Understandably, smaller dogs sometimes find Eko slightly intimidating, but Eko is surprisingly gentle and will often lay down to play at their level
Eko has an uncanny ability to get little dogs ready to play chase
I can’t count how many people have walked by the beach laughing because Eko has a line of smaller dogs in tow. He’s like the Pied Piper of pups!
Eko will romp and play with just about any dog, but there is no denying his love for the little ones. Why Eko is completely infatuated with small dogs and puppies is anyone’s guess.
Does your pup have a preference when it comes to canine friends?
I have more small friends like the shi-tzu girl, no idea why :o) I met such a big pyrenean mountain dog at a show, as he walked hin all barker and yapper remained silent :o) pic #2606-1 is sooo funny!
I don’t think Steffi knows she’s a dog. She looks at other dogs, big and small, as alien creatures. When she goes to the boarding kennel, and believe me, we’ve tried a number of them around the Twin Cities, her favorite place is on her blanket behind the counter with the people. There used to be a big lumbering lab in the yard behind us and she’d tease him all the time…good thing there’s a fence delineating the yards.
You know I’ve never noticed if Boomer and Dottie have a preference, I’ll have to be on the lookout now!
Katie and I prefer small dogs too. We are actually a bit scared if the dog is bigger than we are. The little ones have some good speed and can do some awesome corners while racing! We are also more gentle with them, well, except for my new sister, I go right ahead and mow her down but I have to keep her in line.
I have a couple of big dog friends that I play with frequently, but they’re the only big dogs I like–the rest are a bit intimidating. Puppies are another thing…love the energy!!
How endearing! I love the image of Eko as the Pied Piper of pups.
My furry beast hates white labs, he doesn’t care for puppies, however he has a weak spot for Dachshunds, Teckels and his favorite, no dount is the local Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratonero_Bodeguero_Andaluz).
[…] Big Love For Small Dogs | Marking Our Territory […]
I’m like Eko, I love small dogs and puppies. I will settle down on the ground if they’re nervous. I say ‘hi’ to dogs my own size, but we generally go our own way quite quickly. I get really excited if we meet a Westie – they tease me that I think they’re Pyr pups!
Great post and beautiful pictures! I’ve always been a huge fan of small dogs myself. They’re just so sweet and adorable. I have had quite a few large dogs though, and they’re definitely gentle giants!
