In general, long-eared dogs are often more prone to ear infections.  And lately Eko has not been doing himself any favors in that regard.

Diving for sunken treasure is fun, but water logged ears are not!

After our trips to the beach I do my best to clean and dry Eko’s ears, but this week I noticed the redness and irritation of a classic ear infection.  Alas, adventure has its costs.

Eko may not be able to read, but he knew where we were and he was less than thrilled

“Will, how could you do this to me!? We were just here.”

Although Eko’s melancholy might indicate otherwise, our trip to the vet was a good one. I picked up an anti-bacterial/anti-yeast prescription that cleared up Eko’s ear in just a few days.  More importantly I also discovered a few products that should help keep us out of the vet’s office in the future.

Nooooo!

I now have three over the counter products which used together can help prevent and treat minor ear infections. The vet prescription has enough medication to treat a couple more substantial infections should they rise.  I’m happy about having these, but as you can see, they’re not Eko’s favorite!

If you have a pup like Eko who loves the water or who suffers from chronic ear infections I highly recommend you look into the available over the counter anti-bacterial/ anti-yeast options.  For serious concerns, I will always head straight to the vet but I also like to have the tools to give Eko the care he needs for minor issues.

Now that Eko is all fixed up you would think that like the wolf in Red Riding Hood Eko’s big ears are all the better to hear me with. Yet for some reason when I tell Eko it’s time to leave the beach he doesn’t seem to hear me…

Comments for “Grandmother, What Big Ears You Have.”

  1. I have more ear cleaning products as my mom has cream pots in the bathroom :o) That’s the minus if you have a dog with ears like rhubarb leaves :o) I hope your ears are as good as new in zilch, dear Eko !

  2. Mags Corner says:

Sweet Eko we are glad your ears are all fixed up now and Will has a stash of helps for your ears. That beach is going to keep calling your name and we know you are gonna answer the call every time Will will listen and take you. It is you that is listening to that beach call and not Will, huh? lol Keep having fun but take good care of those great floppy ears! Hugs and nose kisses

  3. Because Mohave had such ears and got so many baths to do his therapy dog duties we used the EpiOptic after each bath to dry the ears out. I certainly understand your concern and am happy to see that product in your arsenal. It is a never ending battle without it.

  4. KDKH says:

What are the products you like? My poodle has chronic ear yeast issues.

  5. Eve says:

Yes we are quite familiar with ear infections in the beagle mix Juley. Hers are yeast infections and have to be pack with some real stinky stuff that kills the bacteria in the ears. She also has the ear wash stuff and like Eko was in one video which showed you trying to do. She will also run and try to hide! Glad Eko loves the water as Juley doesn’t. But to be able to play you have to be prepared for clean up! LOL Have fun!

  6. I certainly have my own set of floppys and for the first few years of my life I had infections 5-6 times a year. We tried a bizillion ear cleaners, over the counter, prescription, nothing worked and we were not happy about always needing medicine. In an online forum we found the recipe for Blue Ear Cleaner, an inexpensive homemade cleaner. I am now pleased to say that I am approaching 2 1/2 yrs of being ear infection free. Bailie is also getting the solution once a month in the hope that she never has an ear infection. We swear by the stuff and other than the 4-letter word bath, we don’t swear much. Here is a link to that post with the downloadable recipe pdf. Highly recommended from long, hairy eared friends! http://mygbgvlife.com/2012/08/23/my-floppys/

  7. Kuruk says:

Eko, you need to grow lots of fluff on your ears like me so you don’t get any infections and they stay really clean! Wooooowoooooooo

  8. Jorie says:

Love that first shot of his ears blowing in the wind! Glad Eko’s ear infection is all cleared up 🙂

  9. Poor pup. Eko, if you want to get back at Will for having to visit the vet again, do some lovely nose art on a freshly cleaned window or patio door. And keep your ears out of the water.

  10. Ouch, ear infections are no fun. Hope you feel better soon Eko

  11. Boomer and Dottie have the big floppy ears too and seem to have the same problems. I’ve found that if I stay on top of things and clean their ears with Epi-Otic every now and then it keeps the infections at bay.

  12. Clowie says:

They tell me that I have selective hearing. I think that’s a good thing!

  13. We use that tall bottle you have there in the picture too… it’s the ultimate Donna-torture instrument…

  14. Boomdeeadda says:

I wouldn’t be happy to see a giant scale like that one either. You’re a good pet owner Will to be proactive with Eko’s ear maintenance. I love that last photo!
