Today we remember and thank those who serve our country in the armed forces. And we can’t forget that today is about all veterans, including the four-legged ones who serve our men and woman both in the field and back at home.  I never cease to be amazed by what these working dogs do to protect and care for our troops.

Not your average pup

The AKC Museum in St. Louis has an excellent tribute to military dogs

And there can be no doubt as to how appreciated and loved these dogs are by our service men and women (photo c/o Wikipedia)

From being the ultimate IED detectors on the planet, to making the ultimate sacrifice, dogs are an invaluable part of our armed services.  That’s why I am happy to read about stories and programs where these dogs are cared for and rewarded for their loyalty.  I’m also grateful for the guide/therapy dogs who serve our veterans at home.

another great site links dogs and cats in need with vets in need – petsforpatriots.org – they help vets afford the vet bills and help with food for vets that adopt harder to place pets (hope its ok to recommend this in your blog – if not i apologize)

That first photo is amazing. The memorial is heartbreaking but ever so important. Great post, Will.

  4. Absolutely crucial in the war efforts from WAY back have been the loyal, trustworthy and brave dogs of war. We should remember them just as we do all the people who are veterans – they served their country so well.

  5. It is pretty incredible the things that happened during the world war one and two. Mummy read a very sad article about a book. The books tells how the government here ordered a mass euthanasia of pets when the rationing was introduced. It was a very upsetting story. So it wasn’t just the animals that fought for us who suffered, but those at home too.

Now is an impawtent time to remember all those who lost their lives. Whee pray that one day there will be peace and efurryone will look back on the wars and fighting as a distant, horrid memory.
