Recently Eko learned the “bow” command
Teaching Eko new tricks is like finding new ways to solve a puzzle. It is always daunting at first, frequently frustrating when I can’t figure out how to put all the pieces together, but always rewarding when we get it right.
Bravo!
With each new trick we work on, I become a better communicator and Eko learns to be more attentive. It is also a great way to keep Eko mentally stimulated. And on days where we don’t head out for an adventure, a few training sessions also tire Eko out.
That’s why I’m in the market for a new trick to teach Eko. Here’s a quick list of the ones he knows: Sit, down, stay, shake, spin, touch, roll over, bang! (play dead), and bow.
Anyone have suggestions for a new trick? If not, I’m thinking we might have to try this one from Letterman. I’m not sure where we’d start… but that’s just part of the fun!
Dudley really did a super job with that tennis ball BUT I just bet Eko could do the same…..he sure has “bow” down nicely!

I know a lot of tricks, but if they are good? I have some doubts hahahaha The trick I loved to learn was barking on demand. Sadly only the first part: start barking, works, the second: stopp it, failed. What shall I do, I have no mute button :o)
Yes, yes, go for it Will, that would be a really great thing to teach Eko! You both bow so very nicely too, well done – treats for you both I think!! 🙂
I don’t. But I completely agree with you. And the bow is the cutest thing ever.
Right now we are all working on the basics because of Bailie, but it is a good family activity for sure. Mom is trying to get Bailie and I to do rollover, but that is a tough one.
People love it when a dog waves good-bye. My first Ridgeback did therapy work, and that was the best trick. My signal for it was to wave my pinky finger. I started with a shake, and then crafted it into a wave. We also did “paws up” so she knew when it was okay to put her paws on people’s beds. When it was a command, it helped her not to do it without asking. It also became a command for “get into the car”.
I also love the “shake left” shake right” trick – they offer different paws for each. It makes the dog look smart.
I taught my first dog to guess which hand I was holding a treat. Another way to look smart. I’d hold a treat, put my hands behind my back and then bring them out with closed fists. She always picked the correct hand that held the treat. How did she do it? I always put it into my right hand. But your audience doesn’t need to know that. Just don’t do this trick too many times with the same people!
This is so cool! Mommy taught me a few trick commands and some sign language commands – yep even oinkers can be trained. .. especially with food. I catch on a lot quicker than she thinks but I act like I don’t because I want the treat – snorts. I know go get ready for bed (which I will go potty and then get into my toddler bed). I know open the gate (which I will do with my snout to help mom out because you know men should be gentleman and get doors/gates). And I know a version of cow tipping except mom calls it pig tipping but hey that’s for another day 🙂 XOXO – Bacon
Oh, we love the bow trick…good job! That was a cool trick Dudley did and we bet Eko could do it too. You are far more advanced in tricks than we are so we have no suggestions but we will be looking forward to seeing all the new ones you come up with for sweet Eko. Hugs and nose kisses
Great trick from Dudley – way beyond my skill set. Jack is working on mastering leave it still – I’ve got it so the treats are resting on his paws, but can’t get him to let me put anything on his head.
What a great trick! You taught Eko so well. Daisy does two other things that were simple to teach: dance and walk. To dance, Daisy gets up on her hind legs and turns in a circle. Walking is….well, walking in a straight line, or in Daisy’s case, hop-walking. 😉 I think she enjoys them as much as we do. 🙂

I had a German shepherd who had a special bowl he brought out for guests just as soon as one opened up a beer. Then he’d get a bit. He was quite the party animal.
I saw a YouTube video where the Doberman was told to speak and then to “whisper.” (A growl level bark.) But it wouldn’t help if Eko’s not a barker.
What if he hid (covering his eyes with his paw/leg)??
I think that’s a great trick for you to teach Eko. Maybe your ultimate challenge could be to teach him to dance merengue!
Wow that tennis ball trick I have never seen before. What about a hug where Eko wraps his paws around your waist? 🙂
Learning new stuff is lots of fun! My Mom Person is always trying out new stuff with us. We play a hide and seek/hot and cold game where someone hides my toy and then tells me if I’m getting close with hot or cold. I LOVE that game! I bet you and Eko can come up with lots of fun stuff to do.

What about walking backwards for Eko? We’ve actually found that quite useful when I’ve got myself into a spot where I couldn’t turn round.
