Moving Apartments is Confusing for all Species

Today kicks off our move between apartments. Like many people, I rateĀ “moving” as only a slight favorite over “hitting myself in the head with a brick.” There’s lots of paperwork, red tape and minutia to trip on. Not to even mention all the actual tripping I’ve done while carrying boxes.
However, I at least knew we were moving. Eko on the other hand had no such warning. After our walk this morning, Eko had breakfast and hopped up for his mid-morning nap. He was quite confused when I started tearing down the apartment around him.

Not your typical Monday. And yes, I have a pink tool box.

I guess Eko chalked it up to a bad dream because he tried to ignore me

Once I started loading the boxes by the door Eko sprung to life. My suitcases weren’t packed, but Eko could tell I was going somewhere and he wanted in. I didn’t have room in the car the first trip so Eko had to stay home.

The forlorn pup

When I returned a short while later Eko made it quite clear he’ll be coming on the next trip.

Packed and ready to go

The good news is we have a few days to move, so we will all have a bit more time to get adjusted and set up. Provided we all survive in one piece. Deep breath. Time to get back to it!

I’m taking Eko for his first visit this afternoon, hopefully he finds the place up to snuff/sniff.

Comments for Moving Apartments is Confusing for all Species

  1. you just answered my question (and suggestion), I was going to suggest that you take Eko before the move is complete, but I forgot who I was talking to! You are such a good dog parent that you already know these things!!! Can’t wait to hear how it went.

  2. meANXIETYme says:

Good luck with the actual moving part. I know that’s going to be stressful on all of you.
Maybe bringing Eko’s blanket (and/or some toys) with you when he’s sniffing out the new apartment might make him feel more comfortable?

  3. OhMelvin says:

I am so excited to follow your next chapter but every time you post about moving/packing it makes me itch! It’s the worst! Good luck and I bet Eko has a great time ‘baptizing’ the new grounds!!

  4. As long as you’re there – Eko will be fine in the new place AND all his “stuff” will be there too so it’s all good. Moving is a pain though…..a major pain…..so the sooner the better!

  5. Victoria says:

Moving is no fun – i don’t think anyone will argue that but it does give you a great chance to meet and make new friends – for both you and Eko!

  6. fredrieka says:

Momwithoutpaws has me prepared if we ever have to move. She has this habit of when she cleans she moves furniture. Drives me crazy when she changes my binky in my cage, so she does it regularly so May be I will get used to changes. we will see

  7. Emmadog says:

Good luck moving. Mom usually moves every couple years, so it is kind of an adventure for us. She can pack and unpack in the blink of an eye. Once you are all over in the new place it will get better! Make sure you don’t forget any of Eko’s snacks or toys!

  8. So exciting! Moving is like being adopted all over again! Fun! Good luck, guys. I’m glad you’re taking time out to have some fun in the middle of it all.

    Love as licks,
    Cupcake

  9. Elyse says:

My dogs have always been fairly comfortable with our moves — they didn’t have to do any of the work and we put always their bed in the new place first. Overseas moves were less fun, but moving across the world or around the corner is a huge pain! Good luck!

  10. Bongo says:

I’ve never had to move since my people brought me home. I hope your new apartment has lots of great places to walk nearby.

  11. Cute picture of Eko in the container. Good luck with the move

  12. harrispen says:

Having lived in the same home now for 24 years I really dread a move. Luckily it is not in the near future.

  13. Tiffany F. says:

I feel your pain. We’re currently in the process of moving, although we’re selling our current place and moving into a new one. Logistically, it’s a nightmare! Tonto has no clue what’s going on and what the towers of boxes are for!

  14. We have never moved house butt mom and our sister cats have a couple a times and after conferring with them we are of the opinion that we do not ever want to move…it sounds like A LOT of work. Good luck guys, we can’t wait to see the new place.

  15. Whee hope it all goes smoothly. Whee are moving soon and the hoomans are already getting stressed trying to do all the pre-move paperwork. They think it will be a month or two before whee move

Wez back and we have missed you. Good luck with the move šŸ™‚ xxxoxxxx

  18. Good luck, hope all goes well. Moving with a dog is crazy. I remember a moving with our Fox Terrier who climbed on every box to make sure she will not be forgotten when we go. That’s tolerable, but that she chewed up every box, was not really nice :o)

  19. fozziemum says:

I hated moving..two dogs four cats three sheep and a three hour trip…the sounds of their people all the way…but we all settled well..and once they knew we were staying they kind of just relaxed..until they saw roos…then it became the best place ever!!

  20. Poor Eko, he looks totally miserable. Moving is hard enough, without certain furry companions guilting you into feeling 75% worse about it.

  21. Also you are totally rocking that pink toolbox!

  22. What a sweet pup! We’re waiting to welcome a furry family member until after we arrive on the West Coast (it’s a long drive from Chicago!). Is Eko special, or are Rhodesians normally comfortable in apartments?

  23. Mags Corner says:

We do not envy you having to do all that packing, moving and unpacking. We will be real happy for you when you are all moved and settled in. Hugs and nose kisses

  24. Oh that face. It’s hard on animals, isn’t it? As you say, they know something is afoot, but what, exactly, they don’t know.
