Introducing…

We’ve had our fun calling the new pup “No Name” aka “NoNa” aka “The Pup With No Name” aka “She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named,” but our feisty girl was in desperate need of a name. “Sparky” was never in contention, but she sure gave Eko a jolt when she bit his tail

I really loved so many of the name suggestions everyone shared – the cool African ones (Lulu, Zara, Cleopatra), the book/movie favorites (Tonks, Nala) and all the other great ideas. I bounced around a lot on this decision. On Saturday I was convinced it would be an African “Z” name because she reminded me of Zazu, the little bird from Lion King.

The lion fit just right, but I realized the African names did not

Sometimes you only know what you’re looking for after you find it and that’s exactly how I felt with this name. I sat out with the pups on the porch and tried to find some direction while Eko taught his sister the ropes.

“Hey bro, am I sunbathing right?”

I had to admit I was adrift at sea with this whole name thing. I was on a boat in the middle of an ocean looking for an exact spot I might never find. Hm, wait a second, that sounds familiar. Like a name that had been quietly kicking around my brain since my neighbor suggested it the night before. Like something out of the TV show LOST… And that’s when my “Aha!” moment happened and it all clicked into place. The name of a character from the same show Eko is named after. An adventurous and loyal character whose name also happens to be a perfect match for the color of my little girl’s coat. World, meet Penny!

Ok so we’re still working on Penny’s presentation skills

Penny is a fun and playful name. When she gets in trouble I already know how I will admonish her with a shocked, “PENELOPE!” I’m a big nickname guy and there’s lots of good options to play with (Pen, Lope, Miss Moneypenny, etc).

We have the girl, we have the name and now we have our first great adventure: a road trip back to Chicago tomorrow morning. Gulp. This should be interesting!

I have a travel schedule with frequent breaks planned and some ideas of how to keep Penny entertained. If you have any suggestions/recommendations for traveling with a young pup be sure to let me know.

  2. Oh the whole soda came out of my nose as I saw the two sun worshipper. I like the name Penny! (and I fortunately put my soda away before I saw the last photo)

  3. Victoria says:

perfect name – she is Penny for sure! And so darn cute! Love the pic of Eko in the front and her possibly playing w/his tail in the background – and the sunbathing!! Too adorable -Eko and his sure to be super loved partner in crime and sister! Good luck on the trip -i know those can be challenging but i bet you meet a lot of people on the way home who just can’t resist petting Eko and Penny!

  4. Ohhhh I LOVE IT!!! She is your LUCKY Penny!!!!!! Loved the sunbathing photo too……drive safely on your way back home…Eko looks like he is taking to his new little sister quite well!

  5. Eve says:

Love the new name and if she is really back = The Bad Luck Penny! LOL Love the new pictures and such! Traveling should be fun!! Take care and have some fun along the way!

  6. Kuruk says:

    Wooohooowooooooo! Welcome Penny!

  7. Love the name choice. Being able to morph nicknames is critical and I agree, Penny holds lots of promise. Welcome Penny.

  8. Kim S. (nerdgrl) says:

Miss Penny looks like me when I lay out–full frog mode–is what Mommy calls it.–Steffi

And this is from me–do you ever meet anyone at a rest area as you take care of Eko (and now Penny) who has come up to you and asked if you were Will and Eko from the blog? Gotta think that there a lot of us out there traveling. I don’t see that many Ridgebacks so I’d be comin’ right over to see if it was you out there running with the pups!

  9. Aww. I love her name. (Even if you didn’t go for Tonks!) I even love Penelope when she gets in trouble.

  10. joanb49 says:

Penny is perfect! I too use nicknames, Chloe is Coco, Chlorice, Punkin, Bubba girl, Puppa or Puppa girl to name a few. I`ve always called her nicknames but the first time Dave did, she turned and looked him down!

  11. Sage says:

What a perfect name–it fits her well!

  12. Robyn says:

I’m going to choose to believe it’s because you loved our Penny in San Diego so much 😉

  13. Perfect name for your little copper colored and EXTREMELY adorable little pup. That shot of her passed out (both on her belly with Eko on the deck AND in her bed on her back) are unbelievably precious – Penny certainly has found the perfect home. It just makes me so happy – and I know all of you are over the moon too! Good luck with the trip……should be – well – “interesting” !!

    Pam

  14. Perfect name for a perfect little puppy! I will forever have flashbacks to “Not Penny’s boat!”

  15. Misaki says:

Love the name penny. Good luck on your road trip:-)

  16. Emmadog says:

We love it! Mom had a cat named Penelope, she was often called Penel. We took Bailie on the road to Florida at 5 months, she was really good. Mom’s secret to well behaved puppies and dogs is always a good walk or run (puppies shouldn’t go for runs but it works for dogs). Keeping a pup tired out is the best help while traveling. She will also learn to be mellow from Eko. Katie and I are real quiet types, so Bailie picked up on that right away. No hyper dogs here unless we have some fun time going on.Enjoy, and as she ages she will be more shy about posing in the “nude” for photos 😉

  17. Penny! It’s perfect! She’s perfect! Except for that presentation thing. Have a fun trip home. I can’t wait to see her in her natural habitat, with Eko keeping things in order for her.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  18. Awww welcome Penny! What an adorable name. She is the same colour as a British penny as well! ^_^

  19. scarlybobs says:

Oh wow, that photo of her snoozing with the tongue poking out…I know I’ve said this before, but ADORABLE!! 🙂

I happen to be a big fan of the name Penny; one of my original girls from my flock of chickens was called Penny-hen 😛

    Enjoy the road trip!

  20. Marcela says:

Oh Will, Penny is gorgeous:-) Tips? Plenty of water, wipes, poopie bags, food, and treats. Have a safe trip.

  21. fredrieka says:

sweet. momwithoutpaws had a dog named Penny she smiled anytime someone came over. instead of barking she smiles

  22. Ingrid says:

She’s too cute for words…..have a fun drive home 🙂

  23. KeekersMom says:

Love the new puppy and name! I’m getting a girl in 4 weeks. Be careful stopping at rest stops. I had a friend whose pup picked up parvovirus after stopping while bringing her Doberman home. Stop where not as many people bring there dogs. Safe travels!!

  24. Oh my gosh, I love this name and I think it fits her perfectly. Good luck with your road trip!

  25. pawedblog says:

Haha! Great choice… she ‘looks’ like a penny! Her sleepy face is just adorable!
    Hugs, Carrie and pups x

  26. Dottie Wells and Tuffy-Cat says:

I’m so glad she won’t be “the pup” anymore. Everyone needs their own name and Penny is a great choice. How does she respond to it? Or does she just look at you foolishly. LOL
She’ll get the idea soon enough and I’m pretty sure Eko will realize what it is before she does. I hope we’re not all putting a lot of pressure on Eko to be the responsible teacher/big brother/ adult, or whatever in this relationship. Remember, he’s still just a kid himself, albeit a very large kid. But, with a face like his when he’s on a good romp, the puppy in him still comes out.

Welcome, Penny, we all look forward to watching you grow and give us lots of enjoyment.

    Dottie and Tuffy-Cat

  27. What a beautiful name for a beautiful girl, love the pictures, she is looking so relaxed. Enjoy your journey.

  28. Gorgeous!!!! Love the sunbathing pic! Have a fun trip home guys & the girl.

  29. Alisa says:

My childhood best friend had a sweet dog named Penny so that name holds such good connotations for me 🙂 Congrats on finding a name and good luck on the drive!

  30. fozziemum says:

Adorable!! I have my Squee set to turbo now…and an earworm of Pennylane by the Beatles 🙂 safe travels 🙂 hugs Fozziemum xx

  31. Cool name. I especially love the use of “PENELOPE” when she’s been a wee bit naughty. Too cute!

  32. Love the name and Sunbathing picture 🙂

  33. Boomdeeadda says:

Loving all your photo’s and the name you’ve chosen too. Penny in the basket with her tongue out is so darn cute.
