Greetings, fellow Earthlings! Have you ever looked at the stars and wondered what it would be like to meet an extraterrestrial? An alien would clearly have its own unique biology and language different than our own, so if one landed in your backyard how would you introduce them to our home planet? Well, no need to stargaze because anyone with a pet has the same task of acting as a representative/interpreter of planet Earth. “Take me to your leader.”

Human babies have years and years to slowly adjust to life. Visitors from Planet Pet have no such time or inclination. They’re here to explore and  they’re eager to see it all. So eager in fact that they often forget what they were eager about just a second ago.

Ambassador Penny ditched the ball she was excited about to go investigate a creaking door. On her way to do that she was distracted by a terribly interesting stick. Which she immediately ditched in order to bark at some menacing porch furniture

I do my best to give my little alien a tour of the planet, but our excursions are less “walks” as much as they are “stop and stare at stuff.”

As a human, I take for granted nearly everything I see on a daily basis. My alien companion reminds me of the awe in all things. Cars, bikes, buses, wheelbarrows, sirens, squirrels – everything, really. All of this stuff is pretty amazing.

“What are those things!? They came from the air!? Can I do that too!? Earth is crazy!”

And whenever she hears a camera click Penny wants to check out what’s going on inside that thing hanging around my neck

Lake Michigan blew Penny’s mind. Previously the largest body of water she’d seen was a puddle. Penny gleefully darted back and forth near the edge, mesmerized by the tides

“I LOVE THIS PLANET!”

It’s easy to take for granted everything in this world that’s familiar. I appreciate my little alien visitor rekindling my sense of wonder about things great and small. And I’m happy to report Penny likes this planet so much she’s decided to stick around 😉

See, the thing is, my Butthead is just about 2 1/2 years old, and she STILL is easily distracted and surprised by new things. Some days it’s fun, some days it’s frustrating.
But all days we love her, because of and in spite of her alienness. 🙂
I not only love all the pictures you share, but the way you share them. Thanks for that!

Reading about penny is really great it reminds me of how my dogs were went they were pups! What a lot of fun! And on Wednesday I take one of my ridgeback girls to the vet to do a pregnancy scan. So excited! I really can’t wait for 10 little penny’s and ego’s to invade my home! So hold thumbs for me! And if you are in South Africa and are interested pups let me know!

So cute. It is amazing all the things they have to discover and sometimes taste (yuck). I know as a puppy I wasn’t as silly, but most puppies are.

  9. There you are again giving me another ‘heads up CC, look at it like this….’ Saving my sanity again Will 🙂 Isn’t it amazing how quickly they acclimate!! The difference between Mr Eko and Penny on a walk is quite marked. You described it all so perfectly in the second photo.

  10. Marcela says:

Oh Will, your furry children are so adorable:-) I am so glad you are exposing Penny to so many things. Bella, my foster failure, is 3 years old, but I am doing exactly the same thing you are doing with Penny in order to get her used to as many things as possible. What a great dad you are Will.

  11. pawedblog says:

Gorgeous post, as always! It’s a puppy’s alienness that makes them pure joy to be around isn’t it? She is just beautiful and Eko is the perfect big brother!
    Hugs, Carrie and pups x

  12. Have you come across a cat yet Penny? Best explanation I have heard is a teddy bear mated with a cactus. Be wary!

  13. raisingdaisy says:

Haha what a great post! And absolutely adorable pictures – love those floppy ears! So fitting a description for a puppy, too. 🙂

  14. Just love her and the great photos she gives you! Eko is pretty darn special himself to show her the ropes!

  15. Penny is such a sweet alien puppy 🙂 guess you’re seeing your city with new eyes!
