Who is Penny? (Penny is your dog, you feeling okay there, Will?) Yes, Penny is my puppy but we’ve only known each other for two months so there is still so much to learn about her personality. That said, here is what I’ve learned so far. Rhodesian Ridgeback, puppy, marking our territory, chicago, adventure

Penny is adventurous

Once I picked her up for the first time, Penny never looked back. Unlike puppy-Eko, she did not cry the whole way home. Penny was completely unintimidated by the move to a new home with new people and new dogs. You would have thought she always lived with us.

Penny is not subtle

Even as a puppy, Eko would slink through shadows to steal things or cause trouble. Penny has no time for a light touch. The good news is that anytime she’s causing trouble I know immediately by the racket she makes. The bad news is she’s often causing trouble.

Penny is a charmer

Despite spending a decent portion of each day harassing the rest of us (as puppies tend to do) Penny always knows the right thing to do to earn some affection. Even Eko, who always used to like he own space, now expectantly waits for his little sister to come lay down with him. She always butters him up with kisses. It almost makes you forget her latest pain-in-the-butt-puppy-mischief. Almost.

Penny is independent

I can still hear the whines in my head from when I crate trained Eko. He took to his crate easily enough at night, but he could not stand it during the day. When I run out, Penny happily trots to her crate, eats a treat and settles down until I come home.

A strong, independent, charmer who I love. Reminds me of someone else I know!

I may or may not be eating dinner alone as a result of the previous statement, but at least the photo is cute!

The thing about Penny’s personality is that it can be tough to figure out which parts will stay and which parts she will grow out of. I know Eko didn’t hold onto all of his puppy personality, so I’m interested to see how Penny develops.

If I had to hazard a guess, I think Penny’s personality lends itself to a tougher training challenge (in terms of obedience, loose leash walking, etc) than Eko.. But I also think her personality inclines her to a faster maturation than her older brother had.

One way or another we will see what this smiling girl has in store!

Sometimes we can’t see the things right in front of us, so I’m interested to hear what you guys think. Have you seen anything in photos/videos which are a defining part of Penny’s personality?

As a pup I wasn’t scared of anything, now I am scared of my own shadow BOL, I loved strangers when they stroked me, now I don’t trust them. You are a wonderful pup Penny and you have Eko by your side, so when you get bigger, I think you will be just fine but I bet you end up being the boss Bawahhhahahahahaha Big slobbers to both of you, hope you are not eating alone BOL xxxooxxx

  2. I see complete joy and happiness in Penny’s eyes…..I think she will always keep you and Emily and Eko on your toes/paws…..she will surprise you with an actual sense of humor as a pup and as an adult – and be very expressive – That’s what I’ve seen in the photos so far.

  3. pawedblog says:

Aww I think you have it spot on, she’s so expressive! I hope you don’t have to eat dinner alone, I think being compared to Penny is a compliment and it IS a great pic of the girls!

  4. raisingdaisy says:

I think Penny is such an intelligent pup that she’ll always be testing you, even when she’s grown. She reminds me of Daisy – she’ll learn, listen, and behave until she decides that it’s time to do a little training of her own. That’s when she’ll try to get you to do things HER way. Fortunately, because they’re so smart, they catch on fast when you show them it won’t work. But I have to say, it’s really cute to observe these things!

  5. Elyse says:

Every human child I know grew up to be more or less the same personality type they were when I first met them. Really It’s almost uncanny.

Are dogs the same? Probably. If so, we’re both in trouble!

  6. Victoria says:

i think she will always be curious, bold and adventurous – great socially with other dogs – and i think as she gets older she will take a page from Eko’s book and get calmer and more laid back when she sees you are ready for a rest (or at least we all hope so – but you are young and can keep up so its not too much of a problem, right?)

  7. Emmadog says:

What a great photo of your “girls”. Be happy she is loud with her mischief. Bailie has earned the name stealth dog as she sneaks in and out without being noticed, gets into trouble so quietly, Mom has no clue. She has a ton of jingles on her collar but they never make a noise when she goes into stealth mode. I think Penny is just having a blast and loving life with all of you, including Eko fawning over her!

  8. fredrieka says:

fun with puppies, I do not mind my crate, I beg for treats because I always get one before bed, so when it is a certain time I start to demand it. That did not go over well so I have learned to wait

  9. Misaki says:

She is such a sweetie, but looks like she’s going to be the boss in your house lol

  10. Ellen Quilty says:

Penny sounds exactly like my now three year old female Ridgeback Nikki.Very busy, strong minded and independent. And very confident.I was told by her puppy class trainer that she was one smart cookie and that I would have my work cut out for me trying to stay ahead of her.Oh goody!Well stay ahead of her I did – overall that is.It took work, lots of training classes and consistency. And nothing but positive reinforcement.Oh and tons of exercise because a tired dog is asleep and not causing trouble to burn off excess energy. The good news is that I started to see a maturing at about nine months thank goodness that continued until she became full grown.I don’t know if this is true but I have been told that the females are smarter than the males-not always a good thing but if you do it right which you are well on your way to doing you will have one fantastic girl!

  11. Even though you haven’t had her long her big personality is obvious. Whee love that she is a strong independent woman . . . erm dog!

  12. I hate to compare Penny to a cat, but she reminds me of my Cody. I adopted Cody when he was approx 10 wks old and he came in here also as if “he owned the place.” When the vet met him for the first time that week, he had said “This guy is fearless….that could be a GOOD thing or a very BAD thing” I think Penny is the same. Cody is now 7 and is STILL fearless…..I think the basic personality stays, albeit tamed down a bit. I think Penny will still be a charmer, will still be adventurous, just all in a more lady-like way 🙂 I am SURE that Emily didn’t mind what you said, that comment was adorable and you KNOW I just love that photo! Love to ALL of you!

  13. Kyla says:

Enjoy it while it’s there-they’re out of the puppy stage all too soon.

  14. I love her expressions! And Eko’s 🙂 . She’s beautiful!

  15. Great personality you got there in that girl (both :))

  16. I think she’s a beautiful girl who is still figuring herself out and I can’t wait to hear and see all the things she is going to get into!

  17. Nice head gear you got going there Penny *BOL*

  18. fozziemum says:

Penny has Comedienne traits all over …so I think she will always surprise always be a joy and always be strong willed..what a woman 🙂 hugs Fozziemum xx

  19. Maybe that means she is really YOUR pup? I’m sure that’s the reason. Our crate training lasted exactly 15 minutes then the staff had headaches an I barked myself hoase. Fortunately our neighbors were in search of a crate for their puppy, so my mom sold it immediately :O)

  20. Agree with Emma, loud with mischief a good thing… Donna is sneaky… the deed is usually done by the time we discover it. ;P

  21. Gabi says:

She looks like a happy girl! It is fun watching their personalities change as they grow up. I feel like all puppies when they’re super young have very similar goofy “baby” personalities and then start to really develop and it’s fun to watch it change.

  22. Penny is definitely confident and bold which can be wonderful and worrisome since I think little will scare her (besides the vacuum). She is very intelligent that is noticeable. You are going to have to stay on your toes for sure, but I believe having Eko as the elder is going to be a big help in the end. He is a great role model for her 🙂
