Big Brother to the Rescue

At home, there’s no escaping your siblings. But in public it’s a completely different story. For example, back in the day my sister wouldn’t give me a ride to high school for fear her friends would see me with her. So while Penny and Eko play together at home, I’ve noticed they are largely uninterested in each other when off-leash at the park. Eko does his own thing and Penny likes to romp with as many new friends as she can.

This friendly Pointer led Penny on a chase around the park

As Eko sunbathed, he lazily watched this game of tag

Thing thing about tag is that there are rules, and Penny hasn’t quite figured those out yet. When the Pointer turned around and started chasing her, Penny let out a frantic and pathetically cute yelp. The Pointer expected Penny to take her turn leading the chase, but based on her yowl, Penny expected the pointer to eat her for lunch.

My laugh was interrupted when I saw a blur fly past me. Was it a bird? A plane?

No, it’s Super Eko to the rescue!

Super Bro bounded between the pups and rescued the damsel in distress

Eko wasn’t aggressive, he was assertive. He stopped the game of tag because he heard Penny yelp, but as soon as he realized she was ok, the whole gang went right back to playing.

Penny (hidden behind the greenery) felt much more confident learning how to play tag when Eko played with her

Based on his original disinterest, I never would have guessed Eko would be protective of his little sister. I guess like my sister, he has to look cool in public. Nice to know that when it comes down to it, Eko is always keeping an eye on Penny. I need all the help I can get!

Comments for Big Brother to the Rescue

  1. I agree to look cool in public is very impawtant! Butt it’s great you have a big brother who is there when you are in need. Mom had an invisible brother like Harvey, the rabbit… but he sadly came always to late when she was in trouble :o)

  2. meANXIETYme says:

That’s adorbs! Good to know Eko not only knew to step in, but how to do it properly. You’re a great dad, Will, because you’re raising great dogs!

  3. Yet another of your posts that brought tears to my eyes!! What a FANTASTIC Big Brother Eko is! (I had NO DOUBT that he would be!) Penny’s jubilant expression chasing that dog is just priceless!

  4. audrey says:

Aww, Eko gets the Best Bro Award of the year, and Will, you get the Best Photographer of the Century, loved the pic of Penny hiding behind the greenery watching her big brother chasing away the lion.

  5. Great photos and I love the “back story”…….Penny’s protector to the rescue – isn’t that lovely to see….she’s lucky….but I do think “Mr. Cool” is teaching her a lot by “show and tell”…….big brothers (or sisters) can be a truly wonderful thing!

  6. Way to go Eko, that was awesome how you stepped up for your little sis… see she’s growing on you more and more!

  7. Victoria says:

Excellent big bro response skills – he deserves a big treat!! And he then stepped up and showed her how to play tag – maybe two big treats!!

  8. That is so great. Dogs relationships are much more complex then we think. A similar thing happened to us back when we had Sally and TIno – Sally had a run-in with a nasty Aussie and TIno came charging and totally took the Aussie out. This wasn’t play, Sally came away with some bite marks even though she totally caved and rolled on her back…but her brother Tino…he schooled that Aussie and I was glad he did because the owner was oblivious. Love it when they protect each other like that. GO Eko.

  9. Kyla says:

None of us has a “Big Brother” or a small one either. I’m the oldest and biggest, but if one of the youngsters gets in trouble she better get herself out of it.

  10. Elyse says:

That is one great pair of siblings you have there, Will. Good boy Eko!

  11. Marcela says:

How sweet. What an amazing brother Eko turned out to be:-)

  12. raisingdaisy says:

That is one of the all-time sweetest things I’ve ever heard!! Eko has really taken to his little sister – I love how protective of her he is! 😀 You’ve done a great job with your little family, Will.

  13. Isn’t that awesome how dogs do that? Mine will interrupt play if they think the other two are getting wild.

  14. Misaki says:

He’s such a fab big brother!

  15. Such a super-cool big brother! They are a little like my kids when they were young – fought continually at home but if anything happened to one at school, the other was there to defend her sister! 🙂

  16. Eve says:

Yes it is a great feeling to know that when she yelped he came to help and show her how it’s done! Good job, EKO!! Learn Fast Penny! Keep up the good work showing her how it’s done, Eko!

  17. Emmadog says:

I’ve done that with Katie since I was tiny, but it turned out to be a bad thing after a while. I started teasing other dogs and then screaming for help and Katie started to get a bit aggressive in her attempts to help me. We have to be real careful at the dog park because that is where I do it the most and Katie goes after the other dog like she will kill. She is a guard dog breed, so Mom is always paying close attention. These days Katie doesn’t go to the park as much so it isn’t as big of a problem, but now I am starting to protect Bailie. Mom thinks it is cute. We all know who is family and I probably would even save my cats if necessary.

  18. mollieandalfie says:

I wish you were my brother Eko, you are amazing. Loved your day at the beach, and those photo’s of Penny drowning, I mean swimming BOL, were pawsome xxoxxxx

Oh Eko we all knew you really liked your sister and now you have proven it.

  20. It’s a sibling thing for sure. Cute!

  21. I (Wally) am exactly the same. When the Italian Greyhound cousins come to play I tend to sit one side and watch but as soon as things get out of hand or the two decide to gang up on Sammy I am in there and calm everyone down.

That’s gorgeous. And from the photos I can see don’t mess with Eko or any of his peeps!

  23. Clowie says:

It’s lovely that Eko came flying to the rescue!
