Now that Penny is fully vaccinated, she has the all clear to romp with other pups at our favorite spots around the city.

Woohoo!

During a recent trip to the dog park, Penny wasted no time causing a ruckus.

Air Penny

Like a lot of youngsters, Penny often thinks she has it all figured out. When we got to the park, aside from Eko, Penny was one of the larger pups there. Penny triumphantly ruled the roost.

But while Penny overpowered a little guy, she failed to notice a Bernese Mountain Dog’s arrival

But when she did notice him, Penny was scared stiff!

And then bolted to me for safety

Between laughing and trying to not get crushed, I couldn’t hold the camera still. Nevertheless, these blurry photos crack me up

The family of the Bernese kindly offered to move to another side of the park, but I insisted they stay. “There’s always a bigger dog” is an important lesson for Penny to learn. She can’t always just muscle her way through life, so learning to interact and play with big pups is a valuable part of her development.

Big friends are fun too

Penny and her new pal dashed up and down the park happily. With his long coat, the Bernese eventually decided it was too hot to play. He went back to his family and sat politely while Penny futilely pulled at his fur.

“Humans, please save me from this little monster”

At that point I intervened and saved the Bernese from Penny. There’s no pup too big to bug, but hopefully she won’t remember that lesson!

Comments for A Life Lesson at the Dog Park

love the lesson – Muff is a really big dog and she likes to play pretty rough, Rigs is not tiny at 81 lbs but much smaller than her – when Rigs gets tired he just comes to me and sits between my legs as a signal for Muffin that he is done – she pays attention to that signal sometimes but not as often as she should.- its definitely a great lesson to learn

  2. you are wonderful and your dogs are blessed to have you. Many people would have taken the other owners up on their offer to go to another part of the park. Glad to see Penny was soon back to herself!!!

  3. meANXIETYme says:

Those pictures are awesome. And it’s great for Penny to learn that there are all shapes and sizes of dogs, and that all must be respected in their own right.

  4. Elyse says:

If Penny is going to be taught a lesson from a big dog, a Berner is a great one to learn it from. They are such gentle giants — our Charlie was HUGE but had an incredibly sweet temperament. Berners are probably the best dogs to have with little kids. When my son was 2-6 and he an his friend would start to hit each other, Charlie would stand in between the boys. The boys could no longer reach each other, and quickly moved on to other things, the quarrel forgotten!

  5. isn’t that cute? I think we could learn a lot from our dogs…. specially the lesson Penny learnt today :o)

  6. Kyla says:

Penny, pick on a dog your own size.

  7. Good lesson for Penny to learn. That Bernese was so handsome…is she too young to develop a crush?

  8. Emmadog says:

That is one reason Mom takes Bailie places all alone, so she has to deal with her own messes and not call on her big sisters to bail her out. Mom likes to watch her “learning” too.

  9. raisingdaisy says:

This is just too cute and that Burmese is such a sweet looking dog! You’re teaching Penny some uber-valuable lessons, Will, You’re a natural doggy daddy!

Haha oh this is brilliant! … She soon got over her fear didn’t she!? The Bernese is beautiful, I expect he learned some valuable lessons too!
    Hugs, Carrie and pups x

  12. Those photos are great and show Penny’s expressions very well, you could see the fear on that sweet little face. We see it wasn’t long though before she was comfortable with her new found friend. She is smart and learning quickly. Hugs and nose kisses

  13. What a beautiful Bernese! Glad he and Penny got along so well. She is such a confident girl.

  14. I’m laughing out loud at these action shots of Penny!- Great life lesson for everyone 🙂

  15. “There’s always a bigger dog.” That’s a good one for humans to remember, too!
