The Dog Fountain of Youth

At a whopping four-months-old, Penny has no shortage of youthful exuberance. When we visit the beach her joy for life  is always on full display. (As are her ears.) “I’m never going home!” But not everyone can be a puppy. Did you know there are some people out

“I’m never going home!”

But not everyone can be a puppy. Did you know there are some people out there who are over thirty years old!? One of those geezers happens to be my brother James. And as fate would have it he just moved to Chicago with his dog Dutch!

Like James, Dutch is a senior citizen. I remember Dutch’s heyday as a lunatic pup but at ten years old he’s past his prime. Or so I thought. As we do with all new city-pups, my gang introduced Dutch to Montrose Dog Beach. Dutch, in a way I can’t recall seeing in years, went romping mad! Pure puppy-faced joy from the old man

Dutch bounded through the water with reckless abandon

Even Eko and Penny stopped to admire the display

“This puppy is crazy!”

It was incredible to watch Dutch shed the years as he reveled in the sand and surf. I think this old dog found his fountain of youth!

Comments for The Dog Fountain of Youth

  1. the face in the second last picture is priceless. It’s great that you have James and Dutch in Chicago now…. even when they are senior citizen…. to be over thirty years is really a venerable age :o)

  2. Clowie says:

I can see everyone had fun!

  3. meANXIETYme says:

That’s awesome! I’m so glad to see Dutch having fun, and Eko and Penny enjoying his amazing regeneration of youth!

  4. LOVE IT!! Dutch is having the time of his life! So cool that your brother moved to Chicago, that is the BEST city!!! Another doggy playmate for Eko and Penny. In the last photo, Penny looks like a Kangaroo lol!!

  5. Elyse says:

The last picture of Dutch is one in a million!

There is nothing like having family nearby — furry or otherwise. Enjoy!

  6. Emmadog says:

That is so cool your brother and Dutch are now in Chicago! Love the look on Dutch’s face too! You will have so much fun!

  7. Oh, yes we can see that Dutch totally enjoyed his beach time. Hugs and nose kisses

  8. I love how Eko and Penny are standing the EXACT same way (minus Penny’s crazy ear!) in the fourth photo–tail position and all! They are too cute together!

  9. Kyla says:

Could you put some of that FOY stuff in a bottle and send it to me in arid Arizona?

  10. Victoria says:

I love it – old dogs should never be discounted as too old to have a romping good time – and hey 30 isn’t old – i’d like to think 50 isn’t old either!!

  11. Marcela says:

They are gorgeous and they look so happy. Excellent job Will!

  12. raisingdaisy says:

Dutch looks like a sweetie! I love seeing him enjoying his new-found freedom, he looks so happy! How great that your brother and his pup moved out to your area. Penny’s position looks like a kangaroo in that last photo LOL!!!! 🙂

  13. I love old puppies. Hope he wears out Penny.

  14. OhMelvin says:

I’m sure your brother will not retaliate against the old man comments! How awesome to have family close by AND doggie cousins! Life if good.

  15. Dutch’s face when he’s waiting for Penny to barrel into him is HILARIOUS! OMG! What a fun beach trip. It’s just ears flying everywhere!

  16. fredrieka says:

    flying ears whooof

  17. I’ve got a soft spot for seniors so I love this!

  18. harrispen says:

That second to last picture had me laughing out loud! Dutch’s face is priceless.

  19. Jack says that age is just a number. He’s ten too, or so we think, but he can still tear it up – especially when there’s some motivation…in his case food, but looks like Dutch is a water dog! Good for him.

  20. Oh Will you caught the joy on Dutch’s face perfectly! It brought tears to my eyes because I see that same joy in Mazie when she gets down and puppy scoots with Jessie James in the big yard at Mom’s on cool mornings when the grass is wet and her belly gets splashed!

  21. GO DUTCH GO!!!! We look forward to seeing more of you and your play dates with your counsins!

PeeS: mom says you (Will) had better watch it, you young whipper snapper!

  22. Dottie and Tuffy-Cat (and, we both love dogs) We have one who comes over for coffee and doggie treats every morning. says:

Great photos, Will. I’m so happy for you to have your bro there.. Mine comes to visit me several times a year, but as we grow more mature (both in our 70’s), the harder it is to make an 8 hour driving trip.

I had an idea for costumes; although the three musketeers is really a good one, I love the idea of three kangaroos on the loose. For sure, Penny can pull it off. Have a great time you guys (and gals).

  23. Fun day at the beach, the beach sure does make old dogs young. I took 10 yr old nellie last weekend and she had a ball and was so young again.

  24. Boomdeeadda says:

Ha, the ‘crazy eyes’ pic is priceless! You’re so lucky to live near the lake, it’s too much fun.
