This past weekend Penny had her first opportunity to play host. While my brother James was off running a crazy race for charity, Dutch spent the weekend as our guest. Dutch is a sweet, sweet velcro pup. He’s attached to my brother’s hip and generally has no interest in other dogs. While Penny storms the beaches looking for trouble and friends, Dutch is perfectly content ignoring every other person/dog so he can focus on fetch. Dutch’s solo act played out as expected for the first half of the weekend.Rhodesian Ridgeback, puppy, adventure, marking our territory, dogs, chicago

Penny wanted Dutch to play on the patio but he was content to turn his back and munch on a stick

The gang would gather round when I rang the dinner bell, but aside from meals, Dutch mostly kept his distance from the youngins

But eventually Dutch became more comfortable around Penny. I think having Eko as a barrier helped with Dutch’s confidence here

After a particularly frantic mealtime frenzy I asked Emily what she thought about having three dogs. I believe this face says it all.

Two is just about all Emily’s lap can handle! But check out who joined the couch club

(Obligatory photo of Emily smiling, otherwise I’m in big trouble for just posting the funny-faced one.)

It took a couple of days, but the old lone wolf settled in nicely with his family pack. When Dutch first met Penny he wanted less than nothing to do with his annoying little cousin. But it seems this old dog fell for the oldest trick in the book: puppy dogs eyes!

“Hey, Dutch, can I pretty please sleep on you!?”

Dutch soon returns to life as an only pup, and I’m sure he’ll appreciate the quiet. Until then, I think the old curmudgeon is not-so-secretly enjoying his new friendship with Penny.

I love the photos of Dutch and Penny cuddling!! He’s such a beautiful dog. And tell Emily she looks cute with both her silly face and smiling – there’s no such thing as a bad picture of Emily! 🙂

  2. I wish people would act like dogs sometimes, that would be great :o) I guess Emily’s face said: yes of course ( but a little later), right?

  3. meANXIETYme says:

It’s like having grandchildren. Dutch is fine with the short-term, but happy to send them chillun’ home (or go home, as the case may be) for the long term. 🙂

  4. Sweet – gives me hope that maybe Jack and Maggie would accept a puppy…

  5. Victoria says:

looks like the family just gets along beautifully – cousins and all – poor emily – 3 pups – what are you thinking – wait -we are thinking about that too! Crazy but fun

  6. pawedblog says:

Dutch is a gorgeous pup! Nobody can resist the charms of a puppy for long… As for Emily’s lap, maybe she can read the post about the size of pups you did! 😉
    Hugs, Carrie and pups x

Oh looks like Dutch was not thrill just put up with the gang. I also bet Dutch slept alot when he got home. Enough of those young ones .

  8. your posts are just the BEST!! Tears in my eyes, but HAPPY tears!!! Special hello and (((hugs))) to Emily!

  9. ooops! Cody snuck in again, but…forgot to give ALL of the doggies hugs too!

  10. Kyla says:

    Dutch goes for younger women.

  11. Well Dutch is a charmer – what a face! He either is adjusting to the pace of having a puppy around OR he likes having his rear end kept nice and warm (tee hee). Penny does make a nice little heater!!

    Hugs, Pam

  12. Emmadog says:

He seems like a nice older fellow, and I think he just couldn’t turn her down any longer! Three dogs is not easy. Now having had four for ten days, three seems easy, but normally, Mom says two is an ideal number. With three it seems like one is always the odd dog out.

  13. Sage says:

Awwww. I love how Penny helped Dutch feel at home. And I know Eko was a big help in getting her there.

  14. houndstooth4 says:

Ha ha ha! Too darned cute! When we brought Küster home as a puppy, our senior Greyhound pretended that he did not exist. It was a sad, sad day when the little terror finally got big enough to get on the couch by himself!

  15. I see Penny is a firm believer in the dog-butt-pillow. What a snuggle-bug. ….actually a butt-snuggle-bug! 🙂 Well done, Dutch.

  16. Way to warm up Dutch to the youngster, she isn’t all that bad.

  17. Dutch, you are a sweetheart! We think Penny could win over anybody – 2 or 4 legged.

  18. Kat says:

    She is getting so big!
