Pets make the best accomplices

To tell you the truth, I’ve lied before. Just the other day I told Emily I didn’t eat the last piece of cake. If it hadn’t been for that frosting on my face I would have gotten away with it. But unlike my above blunder, a good lie has to be believable. That’s where my dogs, the best accomplices a guy could ask for, come in. If I want to easily extricate myself from a social event? I just say I have a puppy at home, in a crate, distraught at my absence. I totally play up the emotions. Rhodesian Ridgeback, adventure, chicago, dogs, dog blog

This is the sad portrait I paint. In reality, when I get home I usually have to drag a happily sleeping Penny out of the crate against her will

Have to politely turn down an invitation? “I would come, but I have no one to watch the dogs.”

“Will, let’s be serious. We watch you as a public service.”

Need a quick excuse in a hurry? Just say the magic word – “Puppy!”

Come on, who would question those eyes?

And the best part is that all pets are perfectly happy to be your silent accomplice. Even pets that aren’t yours will work for a bribe or two.

“My lips are sealed.”

 “We didn’t see anything, officer.”

Now, my responsibilities to the pups sometimes do in fact prevent me from doing other things I legitimately want to do. However, I’ll admit I do sometimes fib or stretch the truth a bit if I need to make a get away. The best part is that I know my crew will never snitch on me! Well, as long as I keep the treats coming.

Come on, fess up. I know I’m not the only one who does this! Who out there has used their pets as an accomplice?

    *Whistles and looks innocent*
Also, that last picture is ADORABLE. (well, they ALL are, but still…too cute!)

  2. I do that too. Sometimes. Not always :o) And it sounds much better than headaches or a fictional appointment :o)

  3. Victoria says:

yeah – want to go to happy hour ….no i have to get home to take the pups outside to potty….want to go shopping …no i have to spend some quality time with Rigs and Muffin on the weekends because I am not home much during the week. Yeah i use it too and they never tell on me, of course, i do spend that time with them and enjoy it so much more than the activities i am getting out of…

  4. Elyse says:

Puppies are the best excuse for everything …

And this is the first dog I’ve ever crate trained. It is a wonderful too. Duncan loves it, and there are times when we both need to just have some quiet time we wouldn’t otherwise get.

  5. raisingdaisy says:

I love the picture of Eko trying to reclaim his place on the couch! We’ve used those excuses too….on more than one occasion….

  6. fredrieka says:

well my familywithoutpaws says they have 2 dogs, a cat, a goat and chickens to tend to so we spread the blame

  7. Kyla says:

We dogs are silent but the parrot blabs.

  8. Um yeah, I’ve done it… I guess I can’t do it again or someone will be on to me now huh?

  9. Heck yeah! My family used to accuse me of that all the time. Thank you sweet Oskar 🙂

  10. Emmadog says:

Yep, Mom gets in some trouble sometimes for blaming us as her reason for not doing something, but we are happy to help her out any time.

  11. Marcela says:

Lol. You are so bad Will, but I refuse to air my dirty laundry on your blog, so with that being said, no I do not lie. Ha, ha, for those who believe that:-)

  12. pawedblog says:

Hahahaa….Me! Sooo many times! Don’t tell anybody!
    Hugs, Carrie and pups x

  13. Oh, yes. It totally works. 😉 Penny’s a beautiful pup, Will!

  14. KDKH says:

When strangers stop me when I’m walking my dog, they ask if my dog is friendly. I say that the dog is very shy and we scoot away. The dog is fine, but I don’t want to chat. The dog never rats me out!

  15. Sage says:

Truth be told, I can always come up with–Sage needs to run; be walked; go for a hike–whenever there’s something I don’t want to do.

  16. fozziemum says:

Hahahha all the time…”we haven’t finished the fencing and I can’t leave the boys alone too long.’..I throw in the risk of snakes outside… roos they may chase and voila..i get off scot free and spend my time with the fur legged company I usually prefer 🙂 bless em 😉 hugs Fozziemum xx

  17. you’re preaching to the choir my friend!!!!! I do it ALL of the time!!! 🙂

  18. You do realise that you’ve just outted yourself, right Will? You’ve gonna a lot of explaining to do *BOL*

  19. He, he, he! I do this all the time, Will. So glad it’s not just me! Also, my folks always said they couldn’t stay at our place the night because they had to get home and “feed the fish”. I think it had more to do with the fact that we had baby twins! Ha!

  20. Oh my gosh absolutely! See I like to be home on a Friday night unwinding and just watching Parks and rec with dinner and my labface Kahlua.. I don’t want to be out drinking or dining or making conversation. So I use him (and he is not even a puppy anymore!)
    haha!

  21. Alisa says:

Hey Will, wondering if you have any tips on crate training. It seems like Penny loves her crate. Roo happily sleeps in her crate at night, but is not at all happy if we put her in during the day. We have worked to make a positive association with the crate, always giving kongs and treats when she goes in, but after a bit, she cries and cries. Samson was a cinch to crate train so we don’t know what to do…any tips?

You seem to be handling the rsvp’s fine, but what about that picture of poor Eko trying to find a small space to relax too? Try putting his big bed on the floor in front of the futon, then watch Penny and Scout(?) fight over the dog bed, while Eko reclaims the futon. I hope I got the name right for the cousin. lol I really, really love Penny’s right ear. It seems to have a life of it’s own. Ya’ll have a great weekend, everyone. Enjoy the beach!

Please give Dutch an extra treat tonight for a “mature” mother of a cat, to make uo for her forgetfulness with his name.
