Close Encounters of the Dane Kind

One of my favorite things is when my dogs see something astonishing, then turn their heads sideways and give me the “are you seeing what I’m seeing!?” look of incredulity. These days, there’s not much that ruffles Eko. He’s traveled the country and lived in the big city, he’s pretty stoic. That means I mostly turn to Penny to enjoy the awe of new discovery.11.1

Penny is now a regular at the dog beach. The sand, the water, the making trouble with small dogs -Penny thought she had it all figured out.

Until this past weekend when Penny saw something that made her skid from full-speed to dead stop.

11.2

“You must be lost, the horse beach is the other way.”

Penny has met all shapes and sizes of dogs, but clearly none of that prepared her to meet a full sized Great Dane. Penny froze and tried to figure out exactly what she was looking at. Surely, it couldn’t be a dog.

11.3

When the Dane went to introduce himself, Penny made a hasty retreat to my side

Penny looked at the Dane then gave me the look. Penny wanted answers, but all I had was laughter so she decided to investigate for herself.

11.4

“Hm, ok these two walk like dogs and look like dogs I guess.”

11.5

“And they smell like dogs…”

If it looks like a dog and smells like a dog? Well, in any event Penny asked just to be sure –

11.6

“pleasedonteatme…pleasedonteatme…. Hey, you guys are dogs right?”

Reassured she would not be on the Great Dane lunch menu, Penny returned to her outgoing and wiggly self. She even went for a stroll with her new pals.

Another adventure, another discovery, another set of new friends

One of the joys of life is discovering the world, and one of the joys of having a pet is rediscovering the world through their eyes.

Anyone else have any good rediscoveries recently?

Comments for Close Encounters of the Dane Kind

  1. pleasedonteatme hahahaha. But now you know that this horses are dogs too, Penny :o) We had such an adventure with a Great Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Easy barked and had the grizzlies the whole time, till this dog came. He jumped behind me, squeezed his head between my knees and was as mute as a fish till the white giant was out of sight… think he is a real hero :o)

Penny needs a “follow” button to keep up with all her new friends!

  3. Cathy & Banjo says:

I personally don’t find cows all that threatening… but my dog Banjo finds them terrifying. He refuses to walk past them if we encounter them while hiking (happens more often than you might think in California). My husband had to carry that 53-pound big baby Banjo past the cows last time it happened!

  4. Such a great series…I can just see her apprehension in that one shot with her ears back…the ratio of leg to body on her is about the sames as the Danes!

  5. Very cute. How brave of Penny to make friends. Rediscoveries keep life interesting.

  6. Emmadog says:

My sister Katie who is a big dog herself is scared to death of Great Danes. I, myself, prefer dogs that aren’t so big. Bailie hangs out with lots of Danes and other huge dogs at day care, so she is used to them now. Penny is pretty funny when she gets a bit scared.

  7. fredrieka says:

    wow big dogs for sure

  8. Kyla says:

Danes are mellow for the most part.

  9. you captured that sequence of discovery perfectly! I love how Penny’s ear is always flipped back it is soooooooooooooo HER!

  10. PigLove says:

aaww – that is so cool. She made new friends! And what friends they were – WOW! XOXO – Bacon

  11. Barbara Sjolund says:

I would be curious to know if that Great Dane is a Catahoula Leopard Dog cross(?) Anyone else think so?

I love how Penny enjoys discovering new things, even if she’s a little cautious about it at first. She figures things out and goes with her own plan of action – I can see her thinking things through in the pictures. What a great pup she is!

  13. Marcela says:

So cute! Great job Will by introducing Penny to so many different dogs:-)

  14. Way to go Penny those are some braves you’ve got there!

  15. Oh Will, she is almost to brave for her own good…..sigh…..

  16. Awww what a great set of photos showing how she made friends. Whee often look to the hoomans when whee are unsure about something. Like the new woofer living next door to us. Whee heard the barking and looked to her for answers. In the end, whee peeked out and had a look. He’s not as scary as whee thought he might be!

  17. oh my gosh that last picture is perfect!

  18. pawedblog says:

Haha perfect! and that dog beach looks amazing! Luckily for penny they don’t come any bigger than a Dane do they? I remember Myfie meeting his first one… not a bother on him!
    Hugs, Carrie and Pups x

So cute – you reminded me about a Great Dane I just saw on my recent trip – quite a sight! http://juraphotos.wordpress.com/2014/08/13/a-surreal-sight-a-dane-in-dar/

  21. I don’t think we will ever meet a great dane… haha
