What’s your favorite photo of your pet?

I take photos of my pups just about every day, but it’s only a few times a year I manage to snap one that becomes an instant favorite. On a quiet day at the beach this week I managed to capture a few simple photos which hover right near that “favorite” line
I take photos of my pups just about every day, but it’s only a few times a year I manage to snap one that becomes an instant favorite. On a quiet day at the beach this week I managed to capture a few simple photos which hover right near that “favorite” line for me. Rhodesian Ridgeback, blog, adventure, beach, chicago

I really like the simple composition of this shot, it makes Eko look quite heroic

This lounging shot is perfect for a men’s fashion magazine

And this one looks like a hunting shot from National Geographic

I shot all of the photos within a minute of each other, and when I took this last shot I could tell the moment had passed

I swung my camera to follow the pups and we were right back to “average photos with absurd faces”

This one isn’t making it in any magazine

And unless there is a “Ridiculous Dog Faces” magazine I don’t think this one has a shot either

The photos aren’t all winners, but the smiles always are!

So now for the fun part. You have to show someone only one photo of your pet – which one do you pick!? If you have a favorite photo (or photos – cheating is totally allowed) of your pet, why is it your favorite? And more importantly, if you have a link to that photo be sure to include it in the comments!

I’m interested to see the different “favorites.” I suspect the stories behind each one are just as important as the photos themselves.

Comments for What’s your favorite photo of your pet?

  1. oh the second one of Eko is great, he looks like the lion king. all photos are great when they show our pups :o)

  2. Jeff says:

Unfortunately Facebook won’t let me link my pics from albums but I’ll share them via twitter. I have 2, one is of Stryder in his 3rd Halloween contest and costume and another from a fog park.

  3. Omg your photos are so good that I could never share mine with you! lol!!! I would have to dig and dig to find my faves, there are some I love but we’ll just forget that for now lol

  4. meANXIETYme says:

I have a million and one pictures of Le Moo and Butthead, and although I could try to pick out those “perfect shots” the one that always gets me is this one… lol

  5. Elyse says:

You really do have a knack for great shots of these two. My favorite of these is the hunting pose — it really does look like they are watching the lions.

As for my fav, I posted it here: http://fiftyfourandahalf.com/2014/06/30/blame-duncan-if-i-didnt-respond-to-your-comment/. It’s of baby Duncan dressed as a satellite dish — an Elizabethan collar. It’s my favorite because 12 hours before it was taken, we feared that our new puppy would die. This one shows that we not only were out of the woods, but had found our sense of humor again.

  6. Victoria says:

mine are not the kind that you would call photography and would mount in a frame and hang up – my favorite shots are of them playing – those goofy faces full of joy. My most favorite are my videos – shots taken while they are in full “go” mode and having a blast – i even don’t mind the one where Muffin is so intent on playing spin tag (where she spins in circles and then jumps over Rigby and then runs) she doesn’t notice she took me out with a spin that took my legs out from under me and tossed me into a snow pile -thats a great one even if it shows me going head over heels w/an airborne camera. i don’t have any links to give you for the pics and videos – i just post them on facebook for my family and friends. Pretty much all i post is my dogs, wildlife and weather shots.

  7. fredrieka says:

momwithoutpaws loves ones when I am jumping

  8. audrey says:

every frame was perfect, and of course you nailed the captions. Eko got the posing down pat, Penny, she’s a natural…

  9. Oh this is a hard one, its going to take me forever to pick a favorite of Boomer and Dottie…

  10. Love the photos……….I have two favorites of Sam out of a zillion that I love……one is a “baby picture” of him and the other is him sound asleep – both of them make my heart ache with love. My favorite kind of photo…… 😉

    Pam

  11. Ruby is an extremely photogenic little dog, and I’ve amassed a lot of great photos of her in less than a year, but this one still makes me smile every time:

    http://myrubicondays.blogspot.com/2014/02/ww-21214-sitting-pretty.html

I love the bright background, the intense look on her face, and her over-achieving “paws in the air” embellishment to her ‘sit pretty’ trick. Trick training is one of our favorite activities to do together and this photo was a lucky capture.

I just love that first photo of Eko – sea and sky can’t be beat.

  12. Krystn says:

Just found your site a few weeks ago, and love checking in on Eko and Miss Penny. My favorite pic of my own Riley dog was a grin he gave to the camera on a January sunrise at the beach, back in 2010. It’s in this group, fifth one down: http://www.krystnrambles.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html, and if I could figure out how to post just the one, you’d see it. He was a joyous pup 🙂

  13. Mags Corner says:

All of these pictures are great Will. Your action pictures of the dogs are always so good. Love the lounging shot with Eko in the second picture. I really like the one with Eko and Penny with their tails in the air ready for take off too. I have always really liked this picture of Chancy. http://magscorner.wordpress.com/?attachment_id=2640

  14. Emmadog says:

That hunting shot is wonderful! The next one is kind of a Sumo Wrestler pose with skinny Sumos! We can’t narrow it down to just a couple, too many great shots mixed in.

  15. Laura M says:

I have been trying to figure out how to post my favorite picture of our Rhodesian Ridgeback, Radley. This Sunday marks our one year anniversary from the date we adopted him from our local RR Rescue Organization, here in Houston, Texas. It’s a picture similar in its sheer regality, to the second picture of Eko.

But, it grew to mean much, much more after our RRR Coordinator, Kate, finally felt enough time had passed in his “Forever Home” that it was okay to send us his sad picture from the day they took him in off the streets. THAT picture made me cry for joy, AND sorrow combined. Joy that he had gained weight, and become healthy, happy and whole in our home, but sad that he was so thin and depressed looking when found.

He is truly our pride and joy in our empty nest years. And this is coming from someone who was “not a dog person” until he changed my life. ❤️

  16. dogdaz says:

I love all your shots but especially number 3 an 5. I don’t know how to show you my favorites of my 5 but I will try to figure it out.

  17. missingaspen says:

My favorite photo of Aspen, RIP sweet girl. This photo was taken in April 2013 at our favorite hiking spot. It’s special to me as it was one of the last photos I have of her when she was feeling well.

  18. Marcela says:

Lol. Your furry kids are so cute:-)

  19. I believe they are all winners! I do love the “hunting” one! I do the same thing, I take a ton of photos looking for that one great shot! Thank you for your help with my camera settings. is shutter priority mode the P setting on the dial, if so that is what I am using, I will need to find out how to change the 1/250-1/1000.

  20. Cathy & Banjo says:

Dog smiles are the very best! Here is Banjo grinning from ear to ear during a hike.

  21. houndstooth4 says:

Well, I am in my third year of doing a 365 Project, so I take a picture of one of our dogs pretty much every day (except in the rare case that I’m traveling away from home without them). I have a lot of favorites! lol

This one won us an award and let Bunny donate about four hundred pounds of dog food to the adoption kennel she came from. It also led us to adopt Flattery because we drove up to take a few pictures and talk about the donation for the blog. It was the first time that I really gave much credence to the fact that people like my photography.

  22. I love the hunting shot!! I wish I have a favourite… still trying to snap it… it’s elusive… :/

  23. terrimm says:

I LOVE the second photo ~ you’re exactly right, a Men’s Fashion Magazine! This is my favourite shot of Moo. She’s rarely every this still or pensive-looking, so it’s not a shot I get very often! http://www.pbase.com/terrim/image/143118957

  24. fozziemum says:

I love the smiling crazy shots of Eko and Penny..i always love the silly ones..it makes you remember their funny sides… my fave is a pic of Forrest eye… a lucky shot and the views he had are mirrored in his eyes..he has always been a special boy and this really got me..this will always be my favourite shot of our old pup 🙂 hugs Fozziemum x

  25. barbsjolund says:

How and where do you post your favorite pet photo?

  26. You always take such brilliant photos. Have you got an instagram account? Whee are sure your photos would go down well over there and whee would love to see them 🙂

    Nacho, Noah, Buddy & Basil
    xxxx

  27. I’ve got a couple of favorites of Jack, but I think this one is the best. He looks so handsome and he has is SlimDoggy bandana on.
…okay – how do I get the photo in here???

  28. Jura says:

Love the hunting one the most I think. So hard to pick a picture but I think two of my favorites of Tala on my blog are this one for her eyes even if she does look like she asking ‘yes, is there a reason you are disturbing my sunbathing?’ http://juraphotos.wordpress.com/about-tala/img_8960/ or this one where she was only 4 months old but already was very elegant stalking some bird in the desert of Sudan http://juraphotos.wordpress.com/sudan/tala/img_8331_2-3/

  29. Sam is usually too quick to grab a camera most of the time (unless I pose him and that kind of defeats the spontaneity of the moment). Loved all your photos of Eko and Penny and find the so-called ‘ridiculous’ ones absolute stand-outs. Nothing quite like flapping gums and exposed teeth in a full run to make a fur-parent or fur-fan smile. 🙂

  30. Uschi says:

My favorite changes constantly – currently this one is my fave, since it really shows Sawyer’s happy-go-lucky personality

These are great, action-oriented photos! You’ve inspired me to try to take better photos of my dogs and cats!
