Clocks are for people without pets

Were the world ending, the city of Chicago in flames, the zombie apocalypse underway – at five o’clock sharp my apartment would look exactly like this.  “The world is ending? That’s nice, we’re still hungry.” Of course the stomach clock is only one of the many bio-clocks

“The world is ending? That’s nice, we’re still hungry.”

Of course the stomach clock is only one of the many bio-clocks in a pet’s arsenal. There is the bladder-clock, the time-for-a-walk clock, and the I-know-someone-I-love-is-coming-home-from-work clock. Just to name a few. As always, my personal favorite is the pet-sundial clock.  Now that we’ve lived in this apartment for a few months the dogs have the sundial mastered.

The sun first comes in through the window by my desk. It’s not a ton of light, so the first pup to snag the futon usually hogs it all

17.3

But don’t fear, pup #2 gets better sunlight when the sun makes its way around to the kitchen window

17.4

In the early afternoon, a building blocks most of the light, but Eko knows he can steal a small sliver of sun on the small couch

17.5

Midafternoon brings two perfect sunbathing spots. Eko generally snags the best spot…

But Penny gets to enjoy the very last rays of the day

Show me where my pups are and I can always tell you what time of day it is. Well, almost always. Cloudy days are a bit more trouble, though I do enjoy watching the dogs look for where the sun is supposed to be.

“I know I left it here yesterday…”

Speaking of which, what did the Romans do on cloudy days? Thankfully my two sundials have their stomach clock to ensure they never miss a meal, rain or shine.

I’m sure I missed some. So tell me, what kinds of clocks do your pets have?

Comments for Clocks are for people without pets

  1. Have to confess, our CAT is our resident alarm clock in our home! Dakota has no interest in the sun but Cody will find every available beam! Cody is also the one who lets us know loud and clear when it is meal time and snack time!!! Dakota only cares about when it is time for his “after dinner bone”, which is comparable to an after dinner cigar! lol

  2. I had no clue that a sundial works that way, but it makes totally sense to me. I always wonder why they search for a shady place when we have tons of sun and now the pup pitchforks me nearly from my bed to get even the last sunray :o)

Old Cissy and I always know when it is time for lunch.. We have it down to a minute, the drooling begins

  4. Sam knows all the best spots for sunbathing but when the seasons change and the sun moves it’s sadly not in the BEST of spots sometimes. He gets grumpy – he comes to me to complain – like it’s MY fault! The joys of parenthood….. 😉

I don’t usually need an alarm in the morning: my cats have me up in time for the alarm most days!

  6. Emmadog says:

Actually, at our house it is the cats that have the clocks, we dogs seem to be more go with the flow types unless Mom is really behind. Cats are real time pests!

I love the picture of Penny snagging the last sun spot <3 Great article once again, the time-you're-coming-home-clock is always 5 minutes early in this house. It doesn't matter where we have been or what time of day it is. The pups are at the gate or at the door 5 minutes before you pull down the driveway, no question!
    Hugs, Carrie and pups x

  8. Great sun pictures. My Norman had a internal clock as to when it was time to go to bed. 9pm he would stare at me until I came to bed. Now it’s almost been a year since he is gone and finally Gambler is taking over his tradition.

  9. As the dinner hour approached here, I expect the stomach alarms to go off soon.

    penny I <3 you 😀 She is incredible 😀

4 is feeding time at the zoo here.

Oh yeah, we recognize those bio-clocks too! Daisy has another one – the 11:00 PM energy burst. For some reason, she starts tearing around the house with one of her toys around 11:00 every night, then play-growls with her bone while she chews the heck out of it. Maybe she’s tiring herself out before bedtime? I don’t know, but we always know when it’s 11:00!

  13. Anne has the “go to bed” clock 🙂 She tries every night at 9pm to get me to go. Unfortunately she also has the 3am clock too. This wouldn’t be so bad, except the boys find it “fun” to not let her back up on the bed so she barks until I get up and lift her back up….oh well 🙂

  14. Marcela says:

Wow! I am going to pay more attention to my dogs and their sunbathing habits to figure out the time of the day like you do Will.

  15. harrispen says:

In addition to all the clocks you mentioned, Walter also has an “it’s time the humans eat a meal” clock too. Since we eat breakfast at about the same time as the dogs in the morning this human meal clock only applies to lunch and dinner.

  16. Lovely pictures with the light!
