Despite my best efforts to hide in Penny’s crate on Sunday morning, Emily dragged me to the Chicago Marathon starting line. It was a perfect fall morning and Em did everything short of give me a piggyback to get us across the finish line in a respectable 3:34. I was also urged on by the fact I left Penny out of her crate! I was quite proud to find her snoozing and well-behaved when I got home. 13.1

My pops came in for the race and before watching us run he got to see all the pups romp together

One of my favorite things is watching puppies run. Their body parts don’t quite match up so their gait is usually hilarious and awkward. They can usually only run in a curving diagonal – never quite straight ahead.

Eko had an extensive awkward puppy phase where his gangly butt would build up a head of steam running and then crash when he tried to stop because his legs got tangled on themselves.  Penny seems to have avoided that phase and she’s really starting to develop her form.

13.2

At the beach I captured a side by side comparison of the two pups running in stride

13.3

As you can see, the gait is nearly identical

13.4

Paw, head and tail placement all matched

13.5

Even their ears pop up at the same time!

13.6

“I shall call her… mini-me!”

13.7Eko’s got the stride-length advantage, but I don’t think he’ll be outrunning Penny for much longer

As for me, well I won’t be out running for a while!

Comments for Penny’s Hitting her Stride

  1. Congrats! it’s great to enter the finish line of a marathon. I agree with you, I like to see them running. I like how all their muscles work together like a clockwork. and I’m always impressed what good brakes they have :o)

  2. Congrats! That’s a great time! Also, I love watching your leggy pups run.

  3. Victoria says:

i hope no one ever takes pics of me running – i do not look as graceful as Eko and Penny and would be a huge cause laughter!

  4. Elyse says:

    Wow — congrats!

  5. Kyla says:

You didn’t win? That’s OK. You don’t have the longest losing streak in Chicago. Just sayin’, Cubbies.

  6. We were thinking about you Sunday! Glad you survived. Never understood the appeal of running. Nice long walks in the woods is more therapeutic.

One of my favorite pictures (a complete fluke) is of Khoi at 8 weeks looking towards Neeka who was running a mad minute around him. Neeka is a complete blur and Khoi is in perfect focus since he was the focal point. That was the last time he stood still. Now, three months later, he’s like Penny; almost in perfect motion with his big sister. Except his ears are almost always flipped out. I’m going to glue them one of these days.

Mom used to leave us home on the mornings of her long training runs. She had to hurry back (2-3 hrs later) to take us for our morning walk. She said it was her motivation to keep running because she felt bad knowing we needed to go out! Your time was great! I bet you will be running again in a few days, it is a habit now! One of mom’s favorite thing about seeing dogs of the same breed is our similarities and styles of playing, running, etc.

  8. coastingnz says:

well done to you and Em. I’m exhausted just thinking about your efforts. Penny would be well pleased I’m sure to know that she was added motivation for the time that you did LOL. I love watching our boys run too – like watching horse racing and the little moves they put on to out-do each other is hilarious! Watch out Eko, Penny’s a coming…….

  9. You sure are brave! I am tired just watching!! Sorry I have been visiting “hit or miss” lately. Husband was in a bad car accident last week (thankfully he is completely fine! The car isn’t though! lol) and I have to drive him around since he can’t drive a stick (my car)……….I am hoping to visit regularly again soon!

    Congratulations! That’s a great time!

Wow it’s incredible how similarly they run! Yep, Penny will be keeping up with her big bro before long, and eventually she’ll only see him in her rearview mirror! LOL But it’s interesting how, right now, she keeps her eyes on him the whole time. They’re such close companions, it’s wonderful! 🙂

    Huge congrats on the marathon!
I love the gangly, awkward puppy stage myself but yeah it looks like Penny has skipped that part to be just like her big brother. Great shots 🙂
    Hugs, Carrie & Pups x

  13. Congrats on finishing the marathon, those are great side by side running photo’s of the gang!

  14. It’s such a proud moment when you come home to your young dog snoozing, I was so proud the first time I left Laika with free roam of the house for an extended period – when I came home she was snoring on the couch. Best feeling ever. Penny will be catching up to Eko pretty soon by the looks of it.

  15. Congrats on the marathon. I did the Marine Corp marathon in DC years ago, so I know what goes into it – 3:34 is a respectable time! Love the photos of Eko & Penny – cool comparison.

  16. Awww whee love her running. Eko must enjoy having his mini me around!

    xxxx

  17. Congratulations on doing so well in the marathon! Love the first pic of all the dogs with the family 🙂 Penny is really growing into a beautiful big girl 🙂

  18. Well done Will on your marathon 🙂 I plan to do my first one next year arghhhhhh

  19. Boomdeeadda says:

They run alike and look amazingly alike too. Once Penny grows up a bit, maybe they’ll be hard to tell apart. Those actions shots look so fun. You can tell how happy they are to be out running together. Sweet!
