[VIDEO] Is a Rhodesian Ridgeback right for you?

Before I got Eko I had lots of questions about Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I wanted to learn everything and anything I could. I found plenty of great materials, but reading through generalities can only get you so far. I wanted to see one up close. For those who are doing the research I once did,  I put together a quick video of what day-to-day life is like with a Ridgeback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y92KZV_g-8E How did your expectations of your pet differ from the general descriptions you knew ahead of time?

Comments for [VIDEO] Is a Rhodesian Ridgeback right for you?

  1. Laura Mc says:

Our Ridgeback far exceeded our expectations. Best. Dog. Ever. I wish I could remember the website that I went to where I took a pretty comprehensive quiz to match the breed to our needs. I did alot of research too (but I forgot my safety glasses). That quiz was spot on in answering with this breed as our perfect match. Like a dating service! 🙂

  2. Elyse says:

I loved this video, Will. And I agree completely with your approach to finding a dog that fits you. And it’s important to keep in mind that your family can change over time. But there is nothing like getting to know a breed by meeting samples!

It’s also important to know what you need/want in a dog at a particular time in your life.

We did extensive research when our son was little to make sure we got dogs who were good with kids. Our Bernese Mtn Dog, Charlie, was absolutely the best kid-dog ever. With a grown up kid, though, I probably wouldn’t get another because, while he was wonderful, he was very independent. He didn’t live and breathe for me, and that, to me, is part of being loved by a dog (how could you leave me?????). But I wouldn’t have changed it at the time.

  3. Emmadog says:

Mom had no clue what a Kuvasz was when she brought Katie home, but soon learned how difficult they can be and protective. Katie is well socialized, so it hasn’t been a problem. She didn’t know much about GBGV’s either when she got me, but now she sure knows a lot! Luckily both breeds fit well with Mom’s lifestyle.

  4. Victoria says:

Well Rigs was a shelter pup and the shelter said he was half St. Bernard and half Beagle – so i wasn’t really sure what to expect – i kind of just went w/the flow on Rigs while he was growing up and whatever he liked we did. Muffin is a Newf and i expected her to be laid back and a cat lover (two of the things i expect anyway) and she is such a little hoot. Nothing like i expected. High energy where she does spins, leaps and full on runs for about an hour and then she sleeps and rests up for 2 or 3 hours and when it comes to our cats….well she thinks they are some kind of live “Stuffy” (stuffed animal toy) and she wants to get them in her mouth and then hold them down then lick them and pull out their fur so not really a cat lover in the true sense of the meaning.

  5. My first dog was a purebred Shih Tzu I had received as a birthday present. Cody was actually a pet shop purchase. I’m not sure hit the pet store got him because he was a mutt. But I know we spent some time with him and didn’t look at him for his breed. (I’m pretty sure they just guessed at what he was was because he looked like part Border Collie when we would put his picture next to one of a Border Collie.) He certainly was cool before it was cool to have a labadoodle or any other two breeds mixed into one.

I would definitely get a Shih Tzu again. As for Cody, he definitely made mutts wonderful.

  6. Kim S. (nerdgrl) says:

Can’t believe how much Penny has grown!!! She’s kinda tiny in some of the clips.

  7. That was a awesome video, If I was to do research on a ridgeback and saw this video I would go get one right away. You have such great dogs!

  8. Kyla says:

I don’t think I’d want a RR. I already have MY pet parrot. She’s feisty also.

  9. Love the video Will! I will say, the ONLY surprise I have had with Mazie as a Lab is how much she SHEDS!!!!! TONS more than my Samoyeds did! It was the only thing that caught me off guard. It wouldn’t have changed my mind from rescuing her, but it was surprise.

  10. We searched for a vet-pathologist and the one we found was Easy’s breeder. We saw his photo… the rest is history. btw: Easy’s breeder had a kind of a quiz on her website once, if a Weim is the breed for you… I answered nearly all questions with “no” LOL. But there is no doubt a Rhodesian Ridgeback (or two) is the breed for you, your are the best team ever!

  11. Excellent education piece on the Ridgeback…:) I had to laugh at many of these – especially the fetch…that’s kind of what my LABS are like and they are supposed to retrieve! What a great project it would be do to a vid series like this for a bunch of different breeds!

  12. My first exposure involved a pet sitting weekend. We absolutely fell in love with the breed then. The first 4 were like Einstein-super smart, then came Sam. While he’s dumb as a stump, I don’t think I’ve seen a sweeter dog. The fact that he’s a natural comedian makes him beyond enduring and I wouldn’t have him any other way. Hat’s off to you for doing research on Rhodesians. Sadly too many people get a cute and adorable puppy then regret it when once they become adults. Just ask any rescue group. Happy weekend!

  13. T&S says:

    Great video 🙂
RR are the sweetest, but not for everyone. They need to have daily exercise and firm but gentle leader.
When we got our male RR our lifestyle completly changed, we rearly go out (clubs, dinner, coffe etc) but we are in the woods every day, so we lead a healthy life now 🙂
We were absolutly in love with our male RR, so we got him a RR female companion to keep him company when we are at work… So the love doubled 🙂 and they really look the best in pair.
I also have to mention that male RR are more laidback, so they make better choice for first time owners. Females are more independent.
Also, if they have a proper daily exercise, they are very quiet at home and sleep a lot, so they can fit also in a small apartment. We live in a house, but they are always in the same room with us, they love to be near their family, they are not dogs for backyard.

  14. Lana says:

We had no clue about RR breed when we rescued our first RR (ridgeless) from the regular animal shelter. He was a very serious puppy who did not know what to do with a tennis ball, and we knew from the second we saw him that he is our dog. Once a few folks on the street told us what a beautiful RR puppy we have, we started reading all what we could find, but, until you have one, you really do not know what exactly you are getting yourself into. The boy turned out to be extremely intelligent, and those eyes….. Ah… those eyes. 🙂 I am absolutely convinced that there are no other dogs like them. Every dog is very special, but something is very unique about Ridgebacks. So we got the second one – a girl. She is smarter than all three of us together, she is five steps ahead of us, and to discipline her is a military operation combined with the game of chess.  Rhodesians are certainly not for everyone, and they changed our life forever. Now, 50 pounds lighter (combined weight loss of two adults and one dog from constant running :-)), 7 road trips later, and many great moments together, we are so glad we accidentally “bumped into” this breed. Thank you for the video and your thoughts on the breed. Eko and Penny remind me my pups, and when I miss them at work, I just look at your blog.. Thank you!

  15. Raud Kennedy says:

Is that a Gopro camera on Eko in one of those shots?

  16. Misaki says:

    Love this video!!

  17. Will you would be amazed how many people do not even take their dog(s) out once a day. Makes me so angry :-(. Love the scene with Penny’s snout in Eko’s mouth so gorgeous how gentle he is with her 🙂

  18. Years ago my Dad almost got a Rhodesian Ridgeback! I wish he had, but he never would have been as successful at training them as you have been! I wanted to tell you (and if you have ANY ideas pls help!) For some reason that I can’t figure out I stopped receiving ALL of the WordPress blogs that I follow (and there is a large number of them), that I follow via email. Yours is one of them! (that is why I haven’t been around). I just tweeted WordPress AGAIN because I don’t know what to do. I do NOT like going to my reader to read them all, there are too many. I tried unsubscribing and re-subscribing to some but with no luck. Any ideas?????? I am ready to tear my hair out!
