At this time last year our never-ending-polar-vortex winter was well underway. It would be seemingly months before we saw the sun again here in Chicago. This year however, Mother Nature offered us a bit of a mulligan in the form of a bright, balmy December. 15.1

Blue skies and warm sun in mid-December? We’ll take it!

15.2

The beach is usually a field of snow this late in the year, so we’ll savor the sand while we can

15.3

After last winter, I think we earned this reprieve

15.4

I’m looking forward to Penny’s first romp in the snow, but for now I’m quite happy to watch her run wild on the sand

15.5

And stir up all the other pups, of course

Romping in a not-so-winter wonderland

Winter will find its way here, and when it does we’ll be ready for snowy adventures and cozy nights with blankets on the couch. But until then there;s no reason not to savor a few extra days of fall!

Whenever winter does arrive, Eko and Penny are ready for it with their synchronized snuggling technique

How’s winter in your neck of the woods?

Comments for Not-So-Winter Wonderland

  1. We finally got a substantial snow yesterday here in Colorado!
Love the winter sand and sky pictures.

  2. I can’t believe that you like that winter… your fur is a thin as mine… what’s your secret?

  3. Victoria says:

we have had a ton of rain, freezing rain, sleet and some ice but we did get about 8″ of snow in early november- anytime we get a little snow and Muffin sees it she just can’t wait to get out and play in it.

  4. meANXIETYme says:

OMD that last picture is ridiculously cute. How do they know to do that exactly the same?
Enjoy your balmy days…you know the end comes soon! 😉

  5. We are just like you! It is 50 here today! Can’t believe I am going to say this….(kick me)…but…I want some snow lol

  6. fredrieka says:

we have balmy and fog YOU have sun lucky you

  7. coastingnz says:

They sure do know how to make playtime look like playtime. Gorgeous kids you have and so nice to see them so well loved and happy. Yes, winter will come – ours was late as was the arrival of summer. Now it is here and we’ll take it too!

  8. Khoi experienced his first snow this weekend when we took a jaunt up the hill to Truckee (north shore of Lake Tahoe). He loved it. He was bouncing all through the dusted scrub grasses and vaulting off the logs in the forrest. We met up with my daughter’s neighbors who have two Ridgies and we had a Ridge party in the snow. Hilarious to watch. Our pups slept all the way home and after a quick meal were down for the count. There’s something about snow to tire anyone out. They even slept through breakfast time! That’s never happened before. Never. The snow is great to visit, but I don’t think we want to live with it. Even to exhaust the dogs.

  9. Kyla says:

The problem with the beach when it’s freezing is that the sand becomes like cement, including the foot print indentations. This is dangerous when romping.

  10. Today’s temp is currently 58F, and I think yesterday reached the 60F range! It can stay like this all winter as far as I’m concerned.

  11. Kim S. (nerdgrl) says:

It’s been drizzley and in the mid 50s up here in the Twin Cities. This after an absolutely freezing November. However, they say it’s supposed to drop temp and we could get a couple of inches. As long as it’s not icey, I’m good.

  12. Emmadog says:

We are all suffering from depression. We love the cold and snow but we just had four days of warm and rain and it is awful. We loved last winter, and would prefer a repeat of that.

  13. We were in the 70’s (almost 80) for a while. There was a storm from the west coast and gave us a lot of rain. And with that came a cold front. We’re in the 60’s (where we’re suppose to be, I think).

  14. love the snuggling photo!! We have no more snow up here in WI.

  15. Well, winter is never so terrible here in SoCal…but we’ve been getting a fair share of rain.

  16. T&S says:

We have continental climate here in the city (meditarenian on the coast of our country) so we have are looking forward to snow.
We had our first winter with our female last year, and with our male a year before, and it was funny. They love love the snow.
We already washed their winter coats and are prepared for snow adventures.

  17. Northwestern part of Germany: Rainy, windy, ugly. No sun (lucky You!), No snow expected, not even for Xmas.
Mücke hates the rain ( like all Girls from Naples/ Italy usually do)- she even more hates her coat. When she becomes aware of me preparing this coat, she turns into a very special catatonic modus, kind of pretending to be dead.
    Silly lovely girl.

  18. trini says:

Seriously? My puppy kids are Florida born and bred (or hatched, whatever). We now live in NW Ohio. The very first time Eddie stepped in snow, he screamed like a girl, spun around and PEED on Gracie Sue! She just stood there, throwing me hateful (what the heck are we doing here?) looks. I have since purchased pee pads and a kitty litter box so their little puppy toes NEVER touch ice or snow. I think they’re still DISAPPOINTED in me, tho.
