See, Santa!? The people want reindogs!

Earlier this week I wrote about what people make of the funny things dogs do, but I got a taste of my own medicine when I kicked in my front door with a tree in tow. Sure it seems like a normal activity to me but I can understand why the pups gave me strange looks.

“Hey, Will? So we happened to notice you brought a huge tree inside. You feeling ok, buddy?”

17.3

Penny flopped to the floor, completely bewildered

17.4

You could literally see the confusion on her face

Eko and Penny closely scrutinized the tree set-up and then Penny decided to do what dogs do best:

17.5

Taste everything!

After a sharp admonishment, Penny then did what dogs do not so well:

17.6

Pretend like she didn’t get caught

I snapped a quick photo with Eko and Penny in festive gear, but the pups just looked confused

17.7

“Yeah, still no idea why there is a tree inside”

At this point I realized an explanation was in order. In not so many words (and with the help of some tasty morsels) I explained that a tree inside simply means more treats. This got their attention.

“Hey Will, let’s get some more trees!”

With a bit of positive reinforcement, Penny and Eko now love our Christmas tree. I’ve found each of them sitting next to the tree, patiently hoping for an early and delicious Christmas miracle. Santa may not be around until next week, but these two have had no trouble working me over with puppy-dog eyes for a few extra treats.

Comments for Christmas trees are confusing

  1. yes, get some more trees and then I bet they get the idea what you can do with trees in the house :o)

  2. Victoria says:

yeah – positive reinforcement – works almost everytime!

  3. dogdaz says:

They are too cute to get into the kind of trouble I thought you were going to say when you wrote “dogs do what they do with trees.” Hahaha – I wasn’t thinking sniff. Happy Holidays – Your friends at DogDaz Zoo

  4. coastingnz says:

The eyes do it every time!

  5. fredrieka says:

lots of sniffing no lifting legs

  6. This is my dog’s third Christmas with us, but for some reason when we brought in the tree last night (we’re running a little behind as well), he hid in the bedroom closet until we were done. Maybe we’ll try some positive reinforcement this year too!

  7. Well at least they didn’t do what I did last year and peed on the Xmas tree.

  8. Emmadog says:

Bailie and I aren’t real interested in the tree, but Katie is sleeping under it all the time. We don’t know why, but these days she does a lot of new and different things, so we just admire the cuteness of it. You both look adorable in your head gear in front of the tree.

  9. Nikitaland says:

This is the BEST Christmas Photo Post ever! Oh those photos of Eko and Penny are so wonderful! Your dogs could NEVER get in trouble or do any wrong because cuteness will always WIN! Give them both a great big hug from all of us at Nikitaland! We love you guys!

  10. dashlilly says:

I don’t get a tree at my house, but will taking Dash and Lilly to my sister’s house where she has a huge tree. Fingers crossed that the doodles can handle it and don’t knock it over or anything! That would be embarrassing and not the best guest behavior! I bet there will be a lot of sniffing and a lot of “who me?” looks from them.

  11. Eeqmacaw says:

I get such a chuckle out of this blog!

  12. Puppy eyes work EVERY time even when there ISN’T a tree in the living room!!!!!!

    Hugs, Pam and Sam

  13. “but these two have had no trouble working me over with puppy-dog eyes for a few extra treats”
Isn’t that their job as Cuteness
    Executive
    Officers ?!

  14. Maggie hasn’t even glanced at the tree. Jack is busy knocking off the ornaments and tinsel with his tale. Doing a good job at it too.
