“Whaaaatttt!? Is this some kind of joke?”

My little skinny-mini nearly shivered out of her own skin. ButĀ for once, I was prepared! We dashed back upstairs to tryĀ Penny’s new winter jacket for the first time.

Three years ago I agonized over spending Ā $100 on a winter coat for Eko. Three years later I eagerly invested in a second Chilly DogsĀ coat for Penny. After threeĀ harshĀ years of winter wear Eko’s coat looks and functions great. It was easily one of the best purchases for Eko I’ve ever made. I doubt I’ll ever need to get another coat for either pup.

Eko helped with some ballistic testing on the patio. Yes, I bought the “raspberry” color. She may have the grace of a Mack truck, but I thought she could at least look like a cute little lady!

The jacket got its first real test when we visited the beach after a light snowfall.

I forgot there’s a slight learning curve to jackets. I spent the first few minutes laughing as Penny spun around, trying to shed herself of the coatĀ

Did I mention I laughed a lot?

Eventually PennyĀ tired of chasing the jacket and got down to business

And by business, I mean ridiculousness

The beach was empty and frigid, but Penny could not have cared less. She bounded around like it was a summer day. At times I wondered whether Chilly Dogs installed some sort of antigravity technology in their new coats.

She did come back down to earth. Eventually.

Penny’s ready for winter. We’ll see if winter’s ready for Penny.

If you’re in the market for a winter coat for your pup, I know there are a number of well-reviewed jackets from brands like Ruffwear, Hurtta and others. I have zeroĀ affiliation with Chilly Dogs, but I highly recommend you check out their offerings as well. Their products are Eko tested and Will approved.

she looks adorable in her pink coat!! Good for you Penny – happy and styling

  2. Victoria says:

almost forgot – where are her boots?

  3. Thank you for your posts. They make me smile every time I read them. That says a lot in today’s world.

  4. Penny can make the bestest faces ever :o) It’s not easy to find warm coats for bigger dogs, yours look great, they are good that they can run and jump without problems :o)

  5. coastingnz says:

ah Will, I’ve got tears streaming down my face from laughing too. Penny is hilarious. Ziggy ate his first coat but now he has a tighter fitting one that the hunters use here with their hunting dogs. Given that he is a hunting dog, even though it may only be beach rocks and sticks from the beach, like Eko and Penny he has no real fur coat. Thankfully it doesn’t get so cold here in the Southern Hemsiphere winters but still good to have a coat for the boy for our longer beach walks. Penny you look beautiful by the way……

  6. scarlybobs says:

Oh I adore that colour…I so wish I could get Zoey to wear a coat, admittedly I have done zero coat training with her over the past month *sigh* :/

Kasper is lucky, his thick fur means he escapes the torture of a coat šŸ˜‰

  7. Elyse says:

I don’t think Penny looks very ladylike in that second photo, Will, regardless of the pink!

  8. raisingdaisy says:

HAHA Those photos are great!! Good ol’ Penny never lets us down with her expressive face and ears! šŸ˜€ I know what you mean about $100 sounding like a lot for a dog coat, but we’ve found that better quality is less expensive in the long run because otherwise we’re buying a new coat every year. One good warm coat is a much better investment.

  9. Unlike you, Will, I never seem to have a camera handy when we try the most innocent things with Khoi. He tried on Neeka’s old sweater (only polar fleece since single digit temps are rare in our neck of the woods) and spent the entire time trying to get it off. He was bucking and jumping like Penny. He ripped the booties off before I could get the third one on, so we gave up with those. Duct tape wouldn’t have worked. As it turns out, he’s not nearly as sensitive to our cold weather as his sister. He didn’t even bat an eye at 28 degrees during a trip to Truckee! He wasn’t going to be shown up by his cousin Zuma the border collie.

  10. Misaki says:

    Love Penny’s coat šŸ™‚

  11. KarenS says:

Went on to the website, found also raincoats (a must for rain phobic RR’s like my old guy) and cool coats. Just as important as staying warm and/or dry is the dog’s ability to cool down after activity. My older guy lure coursed. Hot areas, some shade but even then these types of coats are a must!!! Remember he doesn’t like water. Safely brings down their body core temps after exercise/activity.

And I love the way she tried to rid herself of the coat by jumping. Very interesting technique Ms Penny !

  12. Emmadog says:

Love her coat! It looks great on a young girl and it looks real warm too. Can’t wait to see what happens when she has to wear shoes/boots. Mom has been putting on twelve boots in the morning this week with the -10 or so morning walk temps. We don’t mind wearing them since our paws don’t get freezer burn, but we don’t really cooperate with putting them on.

  13. They look quite toasty and warm. I want one for myself! šŸ™‚

  14. Penny looks stylin’ in her new coat! Pink is gorgeous on her!

  15. Oh, silly Penny. And that coat looks so good on you. You could almost be a doggie model. Almost.

  16. fredrieka says:

I am bored, BonBon just pace and look at momwithoutpaws to find something for us to do. she is bored also..

  17. T&S says:

Pennys coat is so nice šŸ™‚ and she grew so much šŸ™‚

  18. Oh, these photos are wonderful. Those look like really nice jackets. The Ginger Sisters are set for a while but I will keep Chilly Dogs in mind for the future!

  19. Kismet says:

All of us freak out here at single digit temps. Celsius single digits.

  20. Sage says:

OMD, I love Penny’s antics on the beach! She’s quite a leaper, even in her spiffy new coat!!

  21. Penny you make me laugh, great photos, you picked a fabulous color for her to wear. Enjoy your coat Penny.

  22. Marcela says:

Lol. You really take amazing pictures of your furry kids. I could not stop laughing. Btw, thanks for your review on winter coats for dogs. I am going to check out Chilly Dogs. Alex just got a red jacket from PetSmart and paid about $50, but with the temperatures so low lately, 0 degrees, but when taking into consideration the winds, according to the weatherman it felt like -11, so I better coat is in order. Thanks Will and try to keep warm.

  23. Jura says:

Love the photos what camera are you using these days? Your photos definitely seem better and better over the years! Also what editing? Like the grey background and then penny in full technicolor or is Chicago really that grey? Tala’s now in the Isle of Man where she has been braving cold weather without her coats amazingly but it is not sub zero and she has to keep running!

  24. houndstooth4 says:

I’m a big fan of Voyagers K9 Apparel coats, but they are similar to Chilly Dogs and both were started by Greyhound owners around the same time. Chilly Dogs is what I’d go to if I couldn’t get Voyagers anymore. And I know what you mean about spending the money. I balked the first time, and then I was a true convert!

  25. fozziemum says:

Oh Goodness me what a classic..the old new coat shuffle..AKA get me outta this thing šŸ™‚ Penny looks very cute indeed even when she is spinning like a crazed Dervish šŸ™‚ hugs Fozziemum x

  26. Hilarious!!!! Penny looks cute (and warm) in her new coat…….but certainly she was not QUITE sure about it at first………

    Pam and Sam

  27. Cupcake says:

OMG, Penny! You ARE ridiculous! Almost too cute to be real. But you’re real! I used to eat my coats when I was little. They were delicious, but now I get that they also keep me warm.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  28. OMC! Those photos are the best!!!! Will, you have no idea how I needed that! I am going to go check it out and see if they have them in “mini” size for Jessie James the 5# Poodle. Thank you so very much!!!
    Marty’s Mom

  29. I just love your photos! Penny is truly hilarious. As the owner and designer of Chilly Dogs, I guarantee that we don’t add any “antigravity technology” to our coats. That energy is all Penny!
Thank you very much for testing our coats. We truly appreciate it!
    Warmly,
    Julie – Chilly Dogs Team

  30. Whoa, Ms. Chilly Dogs herself! So glad you found the post, I always love promoting products that make life for our best friends even better. Thanks for making such awesome jackets.
