Last week I wrote about Penny’s less than truthful habit of starting trouble with Eko and then crying wolf.13.1

The phrase “Don’t stick your nose where it doesn’t belong” comes to mind

After reading the (hilarious) comments on that post I was reminded of all the various “creative truths” our pets like to tell. Here are a few of my favorites.

13.2

1. “I’m still hungry.”

Ridgebacks and many other pups seem to come preprogrammed knowing how to tell the “still hungry” lie. Penny used to eat practically her body weight in food, but after every meal she would sit by her bowl and flash me those cute, begging, but deceitful puppy eyes. As for Eko, he’s tricked us into feeding him double breakfast on more than one occasion.

13.3

2. “I need to go out. Again.”

Here in Chicago, leaving the apartment means hooking up leashes. Under those terms, Eko only needs to go out 3-4 times a day. Our schedule is regular, but every once in a while he’ll give a whine by the door when I’m running late. The funny thing is that when we stay with Emily’s parents, who happen to have a fenced in yard, Eko all of a sudden desperately needs to go pee 12-20 times a day.

13.4

3. “It’s not what it looks like.”

It’s always what it looks like. I’ll catch Penny red-pawed doing something she shouldn’t (like sampling the Christmas tree) but she still pretends like there’s just been some huge mix-up.

13.5

4.”Nothing to see here.”

Crash. Yelp! Grooooan. These are just a few of the sounds that send me running from another room to check on the pups. When I arrive, I often find these two frozen in place, looking at me as if to ask, “Hey, wonder where those crazy sounds came from?”

13.6

5. “He did it”

A lie as old as sibling-dom itself. When in doubt, place the blame (and in this case the evidence) squarely on someone else.

13.7

6.”It wasn’t me!”

Maybe the most popular double-lie in the repertoire. Eko and Penny will both profess their unassailable innocence to some crime. Either someone is a liar or my apartment happens to be haunted by a very active ghost-dog.

All in all, I’d have to say my favorite lie is probably the lie the pups tell themselves after a scolding.

13.8

7. “I don’t know why he never believes us.”

I know my little fibbers don’t have the “truthiness” market cornered. I’d love to hear what liberties with the truth your pets try to get away with.

Comments for Lies, and the pets who tell them

  1. Ha! I often get the head dropped in the “oh the shame of it all, I don’t know HOW that happened” look when I ask “what. did. you. do?” A nano second later, Sam’s skipping off without a care in the world while I’m picking up little tiny chewed up pieces of leather accessories no doubt thinking “yup, fooled her again-woo-hoo!” WOL 😉

  2. meANXIETYme says:

All of the above, which by the way seems much more adorable when it’s your pair of dogs and not mine! LOL

  3. KarenS says:

“It was the other Newf” was my all time favorite expression. Jess left us over 10 years ago, but whenever my 2 get caught in the act, or shortly thereafter, they channel her. The quizzical look, the eyes that say “why do you think it was me/us?”

Jess would be proud of them 🙂

  4. I like that “what? me?” look … Easy is a pro… even when the evidence … or the pieces of evidence lay in front of him… he is always innocent :o)

  5. raisingdaisy says:

Oh yes, these are all very familiar in the Daisy household. The innocence routine is one of her favorites, but she has another one – the “Why aren’t you joining me in this?” look, which squarely blames me for not using good judgment in going along with her shenanigans. Ah, we dull humans! 😉

  6. Adam says:

Generally a huge cuddle bug, Hank on occasion assures me that there is not enough room on the couch for both of us.

  7. Emmadog says:

We resemble, I mean know those lies. Now looking at little Penny it is kind of sad all those wrinkles on her adorable face are not gone. She has really grown into her skin!

  8. PigLove says:

Snorts. I think we are familiar with some of these -especially nothing to see here and I didn’t do it. XOXO – Bacon

  9. this had me roaring! “I need to go out again” and “I’m still hungry” are my personal faves. Since we have a cat/dog household…..it is usually our dog that narcs on our cat!

  10. Love it! Pics are adorable. 🙂

  11. Victoria says:

the i have to go out to potty lie is a classic at our house and Muffin uses it alot when its snowing out – she loves to play in the snow. Or the I am sooooooo hungry lie – melting me w/those big eyes as she asks for another treat. Or the help me please lie so that you go over and see what the sad whine is about when it was simply to get your attention for a belly rub.

  12. T&S says:

Oh Penny is so sweet on the first photo… and love that photo of Eko with bone…
    RRs are always hungry 🙂

  13. Adam says:

Does anyone else get the “How did that get there?!” lie? That’s a big one around these parts.

  14. dashlilly says:

“Nope, nope, nope, I did not eat my big brother’s breakfast. I have no idea what happened to it,” says Lilly most mornings to me…

  15. fredrieka says:

My go to face is the same one momwithoutpaws gives The police officer when he says she was speeding “that’s not possible”

  16. Lori says:

Will, have you heard about the Lab mix in Seattle that gets on the metro bus alone and gets off at the dog park? I think it could be the start of a new trend! Think Eko and Penny can be trusted to pave the way in Chicago?

  17. fozziemum says:

Hahaahh yes..every meal time the dance Doc does says I have never been fed..i am dying for food..and yes it may be me that has the xmas ham on the kitchen floor ..but I heard it struggling and went to give it mouth to mouth resuscitation…yes Forrest I am sure you did! hugs Fozziemum xx

  18. Kismet says:

    You need to learn Rhodesian.

  19. Hahahaha! This makes me laugh!!! Oskar the Samoyed had NO trace of guilt in his repertoire. I swear Abbe is his little clone some times 🙂 Mazie is guilty about everything, even if the cats did it.

  20. Will, we read and re-read this post and have come to conclusion that we have NO idea what you are going on about!! 😉
    Wally & Sammy

  21. cafall says:

Haha – our pups have a few of those! Monty is a big fan of a certain kind of treat and we keep a stash just for him. He’s learned to work Aaron and I against each other. He’ll stare sadly at the pantry door and make the “I haven’t gotten one in days” look, when in truth, he just got one before the other one left the room.

    BOL!

    Monty and Harlow

  22. hahahaha great and so true, I would take Eko’s 12-20 times verses Gmans 50 times, he just wants to go out and play and it drives me up the wall cuz it is non stop and I can’t leave them out too long or they are gone on a mission.

  23. Dottie Wells says:

Great posts, everyone. That Will can really stir things up, and the nerve of blaming it all on the Ridgebacks. LOL A cat would never do those things. Did I just type that? He weighs in at an adorable 26 lbs. I guess I’m responsible for all that blubber too.Have a great evening all.
