A Puppy’s First Snow Day

I don’t remember the first time I played in the snow. I have great memories of snowmen, snow forts and snowball fights, but I will never remember the wonder and joy of the first time I felt the crunch of snow under my feet. It’s probably for the best. Even
I don’t remember the first time I played in the snow. I have great memories of snowmen, snow forts and snowball fights, but I will never remember the wonder and joy of the first time I felt the crunch of snow under my feet. It’s probably for the best. Even if I could remember my first winters, I’m sure the highlight reel would largely consist of me falling down and crying. But imagine if you combined the wonder of your first snow with the ability to truly revel in that experience? Well my friends, that’s what puppies are for! Penny’s experienced a couple light kisses of snow before, but this week we finally got a few inches of powdery goodness. It began late in the evening so Penny’s first taste of real snow was a quick one.Rhodesian Ridgeback, puppy, chicago, adventure, marking our territory, montrose dog beach

Nevertheless, she was hooked

Luckily the snow continued the next afternoon so we headed to the beach for a proper introduction.

It was love at first sight. Penny’s exuberance was contagious

I (and my camera) got out of the way and watched Penny bounce down the beach with joy

Until this scary looking polar bear brought her to a screeching halt

Luckily he turned out to be a friendly bear and he happily joined Penny’s wild rumpus

It may not have been Eko’s first time, but he showed you’re never too old to enjoy a good snowstorm

The two tore up the snow covered beach side by side

Penny jumped with joy

And she learned an important lesson from Drivers Ed. Your brakes don’t work very well in snow

The wind whipped at our jackets and swirled snow in our eyes

But it was just a light breeze,in Penny’s opinion

One happy pup

There are cold and gray winter days ahead, but this one day and this one moment make it well worth the cost. Witnessing Penny’s pure, unadulterated and kinetic joy is a memory I will treasure forever.

Comments for A Puppy’s First Snow Day

  1. Oh and to meet a “snowdog” the first time is a great adventure too!

  2. Kuruk says:

    Snowoowoooooooo is the pawesomest!

  3. fredrieka says:

I like snow just not the real real cold.. Shivering down to my frosty paws

  4. KDKH says:

Deep snow is totally where tall dogs like Penny and Eko have an advantage. They aren’t dragging their … tummies… in the snow. Great photos!

  5. Victoria says:

i don’t know – Muffin is always overjoyed to play in the snow – everytime is like her first time and i just love watching her in it – unadulterated joy for sure -makes your heart happy

  6. meANXIETYme says:

Firstly, that snow monster looked like an Akbash Dog! Very cool!

Secondly, I love seeing pictures of all the “Coke Noses” on Penny and Eko. We always tease our dogs after they’ve been snout-first in the snowbanks (or eating big scoop-fulls of snow) that they have “Coke” noses. (As in the white powder residue on their snouts like they’ve been SNOOOOOOORTing coke.) 🙂

  7. What fabulous winter shots! I especially love the last one . . . well done!

  8. Fun Fun snow pictures. My gang loves the snow and runs in it just like your gang. Enjoy!

  9. T&S says:

    Oh, first snow 🙂

It wasnt first snow for our dogs this year, but they were also very excited!

    Is that other dog Alabai?

  10. coastingnz says:

somehow I think Penny is going to give you lots of these great memories.

  11. dashlilly says:

Wonderful!!! I love when Lilly plays in the snow. Funny, Dash isn’t as much of a snow bunny, but Lilly makes snow angels, ROLLS Down the hill (truly!! and then runs to the top of the hill to do it again. and is just generally joyful in the snow. Truly a delight. Love these photos (as always!)

  12. Just fabulous! I love how Eko remains stoic throughout all of Penny’s shenanigans! Her enthusiasm is contagious! That “polar bear” at first DID look scary!

  13. We lost our “pup” a few months ago, but oh how we loved the snow. We don’t get much of it in the South, but he experienced a few good ones. I’ll never forget him throwing in the air with his snout and trying to catch it in his mouth as it fell around him.

  14. I laughed myself straight into a skid! Glad the pups are enjoying it. Sam would probably be sitting next to me with pleading eyes, ‘can we get out of the wind now?’ 🙂

  15. Emmadog says:

Even us dogs with many winters under our fur love that first good snow of the season! There is nothing quite like it! What fun they had!

  16. raisingdaisy says:

Love it, love it, love it! We’re still waiting for a proper snow – winter’s hardly worth it without at least one! We feel the same way – we’ll always treasure the memories of Daisy’s first experience with snow, and every one since then too. It’s a very special kind of joy for both pup and human! 😀

  17. Kismet says:

Not for me-I’m a tropical bird.

  18. fozziemum says:

Beautiful memories captured Will! and bless her cottons Penny looks like the snow queen 🙂 gorgeous Yeti visit hahaa..another happy snow pup! no chance my boys will ever see snow…such a shame as I love it and I am sure they would too 🙂 stay warm hugs Fozziemum x

  19. Marcela says:

Lol. Will, you take the best pictures ever:-) Will, you and your furry kids are truly brave. Why? Because Alex and I usually walk twice a day for about 20 minutes or so and then we are back home. Alex gets cold very easy, she has short hair like Eko and Penny, so I have to make her wear a couple of things, layered, and I do the same for myself, but honestly we don’t stay out too long. Even when she was a puppy, she never wanted to be out more than 2 minutes specially if there was snow.

  20. harrispen says:

I think dogs experience a little bit of the “new found joy” of snow each year after our first significant snowfall. They always seem to run around and go a bit silly with the first snow of each season.

  21. What great shots! Penny and Eko are the perfect pair. Both fearless and joyful.

  22. Love this!!! We will never have snow in the country. Would be amazing if Mango could ever experience snow!

  23. She looks great in pink 🙂 Go Penny xxx

  24. cdog5 says:

Gosh, great photos, Will! Love those adorable, snowy faces! 🙂

  25. pawedblog says:

So much fun!!! i don’t think theres anything that makes me smile more than a happy pup in snow… which is a shame considering we don’t get much over here lol!
    Hugs, Carrie & Pups x

  26. I’m getting chilled just looking at those photos. Nothing like a little snow to bring out the pup in every dog though.

  27. cafall says:

She would hate Arizona – no snow, no wind. Great photos and I really love the serious expression on that polar bear!
