A Puppy’s Security Blanket

As a kid, I carried an increasingly tattered blanket named “Night-Night” with me wherever I went. My grandmother’s hand-knitted creation was both my literal and emotional blanket. No matter where I went and no matter what happened, I knew I had the comfort of that blanket. Penny has no such blanket. Most notably because she destroys anything softer than steel. But I recently realized Penny does have a security blanket. He goes by the name of Eko.Rhodesian Ridgeback, puppy, chicago, cute, marking our territory, dogs

From the day she came home, Penny has always had Eko (both literally and figuratively) by her side

In fact, except for the rare few cases when she was alone with me, Penny has never been separated from Eko

Whenever I’m gone and whenever Penny experiences something new, she knows she has her big brother there to show her the way

These days my little puppy is nearly as big as her security blanket, but no matter how big she gets or how old she gets, I think Penny will always feel most at ease with her head resting on Eko

Penny even likes to give Eko a hug every once in a while to say thanks

“Love you bro!”

Eko really embraces his role as big brother, so I guess even dogs are susceptible to the wiles of cute puppies. Which is good, because I don’t think Penny gave Eko much choice in the matter.

Comments for A Puppy’s Security Blanket

  1. KarenS says:

You have a wonderful boy in Eko. And Penny is a very lucky puppy to have such a patient “big brother”. I wish my older guy had been a little kinder to his little bro. They aren’t as cuddly as your two. They still play together but times when they actually touch each other when sleeping are rare.

  2. Eko is much better than any blankie he is the rock what all little girls need to grow up :o)

  3. fredrieka says:

I seen in the 3rd picture Eko is being devious with his paw on his nose laughing because if he farts Penny is in for a load of aroma

  4. Kismet says:

I haven’t seen my siblings in years.

  5. Emmadog says:

Bailie actually “came” with a blanket. It is purple, super cute and was supposed to smell like her mom and other 13 littermates to make her feel more at home. She still has it, but it is rather tattered and she has eaten parts of it, but Mom just can’t get rid of it! I’m not always the best sister, Katie is the more caring one for Bailie to go to for help.

  6. Adorable! Our pomeranian Scooter is in exactly the same situation as Penny. We hand raised him from 4weeks old after he was rejected by his mother, and our (now 12 year old) dog Bear has always been around to provide him comfort as he learned all about life as a dog 🙂

  7. coastingnz says:

My Ziggy is the same with his “brother” Nico – thunder storm it is big brother he often snuggles up to. When feeling anxious or sometimes even told off, he climbs onto Nico’s bed. They are best friends and it is great to see. Have I told you I love your pups! not quite as much as I love mine of course but love following their adventures and hearing of their shenanigans. 🙂

  8. Cathy & Banjo says:

Both your pups are lucky dogs indeed. When my dog Banjo was a puppy and first came to live with us, he cried a lot and had a hard time adjusting initially. One day my husband heard peaceful silence and went to investigate. What he found was our friendly cat, Claude, curled up in bed next to little Banjo, comforting and calming his new dog-brother. Claude passed away a couple of years ago, but we’ll always be grateful to him for easing Banjo’s adjustment into his forever home and for being a great cat-brother.

  9. Aw, how sweet. Sam’s ‘security blanket’ was that impish OES female, Puck and even though she crossed the Rainbow Bridge nearly 4 years ago, he still wants to rush over to EVERY single OES he sees, evidently thinking it’s her. Maybe he needs a new big sister? 🙂

  10. They are just so cute together and the bond they have is PRECIOUS……

    Hugs, Pam and Sam

My blanket’s name was “Night-night”, too!!! It is a stringy ol’ thing but I still love it dearly. It’s enjoying retirement on the top shelf of the closet these days 🙂

  12. T&S says:

Our female doesnt like to be without our male. When someone of us takes only our male for a walk, she walks like crazy in circles from windows to doors untill he comes back. Separation anxiety, I guess.
She loves to sleep with him in his bed, she does everything as our male, but she also tought him some dirty tricks of her own.
And she is most of the times jelaous of other females near him, its funny (she is spayed).
    She loves her male 🙂

  13. It always amazes me how tight of a ridge-ball these dogs can get into. Other times, legs are all over the place. Neeka likes to be under her blanket. Whenever it falls off during the night, she’ll make a noise or nudge me until I recover her. Khoi, on the other hand, has to be on top of the blacket; generally the same one Neeka is under. He gets the most confused face when the blanket growls at him.

  14. pawedblog says:

This is so damn sweet! Millie likes to rest her head on some pup butt too… they, unlike Eko often aren’t pleased!
    Hugs, Carrie & Pups x

  15. raisingdaisy says:

What a precious pair! I love their relationship. 🙂

  16. Marcela says:

Aww! What a beautiful pair of furry kids.

  17. fozziemum says:

So lovely they have that bond..it really is nice to know someone has not just your back..but a back..you can rest on 🙂 ..my daughter Rhiannon had ‘blankie’ a tattered gold thing with a satin binding..if we were 50kms from home and it was left behind..back we had to go..he loved it..and it still exists today..not so bright very tattered and bordering on a vapour…30 years on 🙂 hugs Fozziemum xx

  18. Nikitaland says:

Just when I thought that your photographs could not ever get any better, you come out with these! That first photo is so wonderful and hilarious at the same time. Nothing is better than having a rump to rest your head on! Keep the snuggle fests coming!

  19. She certainly didn’t give Eko a choice, but i think you wouldn’t have it any other way!! What a blessing, they are precious together and Eko’s patience is to be commended!

  20. Maggie feels that way about Jack too – big brothers are great.

  21. amzntammy12 says:

It’s just wonderful to have a big bro by your side. Nothing like a live comforter to nuzzle. 🙂

  22. cafall says:

So sweet! As much as Monty and Harlow like each other, I’ve never seen them cuddle. They play, they wrestle, they occasionally touch when begging, but when it comes to sleeping, they prefer their own sides of the house.

  23. It is so great how they bonded!

  24. They have such a wonderful relationship! I was thrilled when Ruby and Boca bonded so well, since my two previous dogs merely tolerated each other.

  25. That is Abbe and Anne. Anne is a bit lost the few times I have neede to take her on her own and very relieved to get home to her big sister.

  26. What a perfect pair. Cuddling is the best, and family cuddling is the super-best!

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake
