My all-season adventurer

But one of my favorite things about having dogs is the unplanned and unexpected adventures. Those spontaneous moments of exuberance and mischievousness which appear from nowhere and owe their existence to nothing in particular.

At the end of last week I took out my recycling after a trip to the beach. Apparently I did not close the door well enough  because at the bottom of the steps I heard a thunderous avalanche behind me. Eko and Penny decided they weren’t done romping for the day.

The players dashed onto the field

And the game was on!

19.4

Penny zoomed with reckless abandon

19.5

And jumped with joy

Why? Because why not?

Even a trip to the recycling bin can be an adventure with pups

Now, all unexpected adventures with pups are not pure joy (Penny destroying my couch, for example). But these unexpected and unscripted moments are what make life interesting. And more often than not, they make life a whole lot more fun!

As time passes the ruined couch will make you smile. Mom says as long as we aren’t hurt it is all just a part of our lives. We’re working on Bailie being out of the kennel and have almost a week down now with no destruction. Every day is an adventure and it should be. Glad they had a nice romp.

  2. they are just great! they need ni ipads or phones to have fun, they create a trashure hunt with a snowball (is it a snow ball? I hope…) aren’t they the happiest living things on earth that moment?

Ridgebacks are such fun dogs, even when they tear things like your sofa up. I always found it amazing how they seem to take things apart, one string at a time, worst was a feather pillow though! I was cleaning feathers up for a year . Also, our daughter and her husband have a male. When they play with a squeaky toy, they howl and ?I have a photo of the two of them on my daughters sofa howling together. Now in the Caribbean, we also have a chihuahua/Schitzou, and she and our Ridgeback do the same. Amazing to see one so big and one so small howling together!

  4. Romping is the best. So is recycling. Sometimes Mom throws plastic bottles around for me to chase. They’re the best toys ever!!

  5. So true! Life is all about the adventure . . . and dogs make it even better!

  6. Ah yes, those moments of snow friskiness. Those sights make a dog-parent smile…inside and out (even with a ruined couch which everyone with a puppy should expect to have!).

Totally agree as would our boys who experience many of an adventure here on the West Coast. We make most of our adventures together and have discovered wonderful hiking and biking trails together. Our boys have seen more of the West Coast than many of the people that live here.

At least your two are big enough to romp in the snow without disappearing! Dear husband actually bought a small electric snowblower to plow a path like a racetrack around the backyard for Steffi. Then he decided it wasn’t big enough so plowed additional space for her. I think we’re the only ones in the neighborhood who plowed the backyard! He didn’t have to do it this year as she’s gone but there just may be a new pup by next winter.

  9. You’ve definitely got two ridgeback snow bunnies!!

    Hugs, Sammy

Isn’t that why dogs are so awesome? They can make the ordinary so much better!

  11. They had cabin fever and made a break for it!

Love those unexpected moments of frolic that dogs just DO! Great pics.

  13. fozziemum says:

    That they do 🙂

My favorite is the ride in the car to move the car from the street in front of the house to the garage in the back. Oh my word, such an adventure!!! I admit though that I love the company!

  15. Marcela says:

Penny is the epitome of youthful exuberance. She reminds me of my Alex, now almost 13 years old, and still a little crazy. A trainer, a long time ago, told me that Alex would start to settle between the age of 4 to 7 years old. Ha! No such luck. Alex was very active until she was 10 years old. Who knows? Penny may be like Alex, and if that is the case my dear Will, I’d wish you much health a tons of energy. Why? You are going to need it. Enjoy your pups:–)

  16. They wanted to enjoy the snow before it went away.

  17. Oh but when they are fun, they are TONS of fun 🙂

  18. They can find an adventure anywhere can’t they? I agree, it’s one of the things I love about our dogs too.

  19. I just love how dogs make the most of even the most ordinary of moments.
