Are “Dog People” Born or Made?

I love dogs. Always have. For as long as I can remember I’ve been a dog guy. I also love Emily. But when we started dating, Emily was not a dog person. *GASP!* I know, I know. Emily didn’t particularly dislike dogs but she didn’t particularly like them either. When I
I love dogs. Always have. For as long as I can remember I’ve been a dog guy. I also love Emily. But when we started dating, Emily was not a dog person. *GASP!* I know, I know. Emily didn’t particularly dislike dogs but she didn’t particularly like them either. When I talked about getting a dog Emily was hesitant. Thankfully Eko’s charm proved too powerful and he wooed Emily into bringing him home. 20.1

Just look at her smirk!

Loving a cute puppy is easy. Loving and caring for a dog full-time is not. It involves a lot of work and commitment. Emily made that commitment with me and her love of dogs grew each day.

20.2

Eko grew too, but they still hold each other the same way they did that first day

Over the past four years Emily discovered how much her interests line up with a pup’s interests.

20.3

Emily loves walks and runs

20.4

She loves naps

20.5

She loves finding a good treat

20.6

And did I mention she loves naps?

Walks and naps and treats and naps are great. But I don’t think those things are the main reason Emily’s fallen head over heels for the pups. I think the real reason Emily’s come over to the “dog person” side  is all the additional love the dogs provide her.

20.7

It’s a whole lot of love

20.8

No matter the weather, Emily can always count on the pups for plenty of affection

20.9

And no matter where she sits in the apartment, you can be sure Emily will have her pups curled up close

20.91

So close in fact it’s sometimes hard to see she’s there

20.92

Emily’s become a dog-person through and through

So it seems “dog people” are both born and made. Which one are you? Or are you unconverted like Emily once was!? *DOUBLE GASP*

Eko and Penny would be happy to love you until you realize it’s hopeless not to love them back!

    So cute!

think dog people can be both born and made. But I kind of think those that are “made” were actually “born” with it, but it was yet undiscovered. 🙂

  2. I agree and both kind of dog people are great because they complement each other :o) I think I’m a natural born dog people, I can’t remember a time without dogs :o)

  3. Emmadog says:

Hard to believe but Mom was a solid cat person in her early years, but slowly she turned to dogs and now she is a total dog person. We do so much together, it is wonderful for all of us. Our cats are great, but they don’t do much…never seen anyone take a cat for a run for instance…both you pups are so likeable, if someone doesn’t like you, they need a psychiatric evaluation!

  4. KarenS says:

Not born a dog person but loved our cats growing up. When I got married, to a dog person, discovered I was a pet person. We had an old fat cat & I began my journey to dog lover. Not with the beginner models mind you. We had our Newf & first Ridgeback.

Years later with 2 RR’s now in our home I realize a dog person I am. Love the way they want to be part of your life. Love how we can go for walks together. Love the way they cuddle, especially the RR’s. Love my goofy boys

  5. Victoria says:

Excellent pics of Emily and the pups – i think she was born a dog person but it was dormant until she met and feel in love w/Eko and Penny!!!!!!!

  6. Ellen Quilty says:

Who could resist those two? They are so cute and loving.

  7. Cute! Was totally born a dog person- one of my first words, and lifelong obsession since 😉

  8. Kismet says:

The answer is neither. I was hatched.

  9. Eve says:

I guess I’m a dog person thru and thru as I grew up with dogs since little. Also my first dog was a German Shepherd but have also had beagles and currently have a beagle mix! Love them all!

  10. I’m a birm dog person. But I’ve also been around dogs since birth. Both sides of my family (particularly my Dad’s parents and my Mom’s Mom) have had dogs. I would do sleepovers at their houses and there were dogs. My Dad’s parents got me my first (purebred) dog as a present for my 5th birthday. Cody came a few years later. My uncle (who married into the family) was never a dog person. But, because we already had dogs in the family, he learned to tolerate them.

I dont think he’ll let them get one. (They have a pretty full schedule anyways. The eldest kid is anout to go into college in the fall and the other two do multiple sports. And my uncle does sports as well.) But it’s good to see him learn to tolerate while we had them.

  11. Gasp indeed, I can’t even begin to imagine life as a non-dog person! Yikes! But it’s no wonder that Emily is now attached to your pups, they are just freaking adorable!

  12. raisingdaisy says:

I was most definitely born a dog person. I’ve loved dogs since I was old enough to recognize one and I just can’t imagine my life without one. They introduce a whole other facet of love to a person’s life. I actually watched my uncle change from an ice cold businessman to a softie once his new wife got a dog – that dog positively melted him. He even speaks more warmly now! 😀

  13. Glad Miss Emily learned the error in her ways!

  14. Wendy says:

If you’re a dog person who grew up with dogs you easily identify what’s missing from your life when you don’t have a dog. If you never had a dog how would you know about the love, loyalty and fun that comes with them until someone shows you? There’s lots of latent dog lovers out there just waiting to be “made”. You and Emily are just lucky to be dog lovers “born” and “made” with two great dogs to share the adventure.

  15. KDKH says:

I was a cat person growing up with some dogs that were never really mine. When I married, my husband wanted a dog. Now, we have 4 dogs, 2 cats, and 4 parrots. I love the. All enthusiastically. So I was more made than born, but certainly am a dog person now. But about Emily– isn’t Riley her dog?

  16. cdog5 says:

What a great post, Will! Love the photos, the captions, the whole idea of “dog people” — made or born? And most of all, love your sense of humor! 🙂

  17. Dogs are undeniably in my blood. My maternal grandparents raised Airedales and always had four or five dogs at a time. My first childhood dog was an Airedale/Cattle Dog mix and I was always taught that dogs were part of the family. Feeding the dogs was my evening chore for as long as I can remember, which helped instill a sense of the responsibility they required. My love for animals is one of my most treasured legacies, and sometimes when I’m gazing adoringly at Ruby and Boca I think I am more dog than people 🙂

  18. Our family has always had dogs! I can’t imagine not having one. 🙂 Ellie

  19. Oh Will I am a born “animal” person 🙂 Mom says that I wanted stuffed animals when I was tiny and drug home everything from frogs and caterpillars to every stray animal (including a lost horse when I was 6) I could find.

  20. dashlilly says:

No you have it wrong… some people just think they aren’t dog people. Case in point: Emily.

  21. Jessica Gaab says:

I was definitely born a dog person! I’ve always had one and would love more when we have more room! For now we must be content with just one.

  22. fozziemum says:

A born animal nut here..from my first cockatoo Cliffy my first dog a cockerspaniel Tammy and on and on…always loves animals..but never got my dream pet as a child..the dinosaur…bitterly disappointed and wish I had met one 🙂 hugs Fozziemum xx

  23. Ogee says:

Is it my imagination? Or does Penny look like Emily while Eko takes after you??!

  24. hachikome says:

I think I’ve always been a dog person, but some people can grow into ones too… both types are good! Great pics!

  25. I think they are both and I’m glad Eko won her over to the dog side. I was born!

  26. cafall says:

I grew up a dog person. I’ve always had them and I’m not sure I can live without them. My husband is more like Penny. He learned to love them along the way.

Monty and Harlow, who are really glad Aaron hung in there…

  27. Elyse says:

    Dog person from conception.

  28. I was born a lover of all animals. I’ll never forget the time my goldfish, Jaws, died (I was a youngster then). I sobbed uncontrollably and I think my family realized then that I was a little bit too crazy about animals. 🙂

While I’ve always loved animals – I haven’t always known how to care for them properly. Thankfully, that has changed. Blueberry has definitely reaped the rewards of my growing knowledge.

  29. Always been a dog person and luckily when I got older, my allergies realized it was pointless to resist and they gave up!

  30. Cathy & Banjo says:

I was always a cat person, but when I met my now-husband, he assured me that ‘there will be at least one dog’. So I braced myself. Four years ago we got little puppy Banjo… Day by day, week by week, month by month, Banjo and I trained each other, and now I am 100% a ‘Banjo person’. I still love cats, but I will say I am now a hybrid cat-dog person, with leanings towards (gasp) dogs. I can definitely identify with Emily, as our journeys appear to have been pretty similar!

  31. Such a lovely post. And for the record, I am totally and completely guilty of being a dog person from the start. 🙂

  32. OhMelvin says:

Ohhhhhh, good question! I think there are some people who are dog people, 100%. Honestly, I have always loved dogs but it wasn’t until i was an adult and I saw how a dog and human bond enhanced life that I really got it. I went from ‘dogs are great’ to ‘dogs are required’!
