Daylight Saving Time is a weird trick that no one quite understands.

Kind of like the levitating Penny trick from last week

We’re going in one direction and then all of a sudden the clock turns around and tells us it’s not what time we think it is.

Every time we change the clocks I feel like Penny in the above photo

Us humans have managed to trick ourselves into believing we can play with time, but our pets care little for our calculations. Breakfast and Dinner time are immutable. Daylight Saving Time is completely alien to them.

Speaking of alien, I recently discovered Penny’s silhouette is a space invader

Yesterday morning the pups were so delighted to get breakfast earlier than expected, they demanded dinner early too. Luckily I was able to fend them off with a few treats.

Keeping the natives from getting restless

“I don’t understand DST, Will.” Neither do I, Penny.

As usual, we go by Hungry Standard Time, regardless of what the clock says. I’m with the dogs on this one and say we should do away with DST.

Anyone else get tricked into early meals, walks or shenanigans yesterday?

Comments for Whoever invented DST did not have pets

  1. Me neither… that procedere is totally useless… but hey, I get my food one hour earlier now and then I can bug them in the afternoon when I’m hungry… that’s ok :o)

  2. Oh, you really don’t want my thoughts on DST! Awk. Sweet Sam seems genuinely mystified and flummoxed but I remember the days with the OES’s…well let’s just say they didn’t go quietly into the night. The whole thing is global madness.

  3. PigLove says:

What time change? Anipals have no time change function. We have our inner clocks that we go by called the tummies. Yeah that inner clock let the humans sleep in a little later yesterday/today. But you better believe me that same inner clock demanded dinner on time – snorts and rolls with laughter. XOXO – Bacon

  4. Kismet says:

We don’t do DST in Arizona. Dogs have their own time clock. When we lived in an area with DST, we had a westie mix who got his treats at 8 and 11. If we didn’t offer them at those times, he would be very insistent and scratch us until he got treats. We thought it might have been triggered by the Jeopardy thinking muchic which happened just before 8 and the news which started at 11. Nope, It took him a week to adjust-it wasn’t what was on TV.

  5. meANXIETYme says:

We pretty much exhausted the pups yesterday to within an inch of their capabilities. Then they slept through their original dinner time (breakfast was easy b/c an hour early means YAY! for them anyway) and I’m hopeful that will have them on their new schedule today. But I guess we’ll see!

  6. Emmadog says:

We have no trouble with adjusting except for the sleep portion. I couldn’t get my furry behind out of bed this morning. Mom has to actually shake me out of it. It will be better tomorrow most likely.

  7. raisingdaisy says:

We’re actually very lucky with Daisy – she stays in her bed as long as we stay in ours (sometimes even longer!) and is very patient in waiting for her meals. Not so with my friend’s dog, who we used to dogsit – that dog’s brain was half alarm clock. So DST or not, Daisy just rolls with the punches, and we’re VERY appreciative. 🙂

  8. coastingnz says:

My boys (particularly one) always tries an hour being feeding time – the big brown eyes come out to play with my mind so it is a constant battle to be strong no matter what.

  9. Yep!!! Cody is our mealtime ringleader…..he started to meow for food at 4 (the old 3), and 4 used to be their mealtime. He was STILL meowing an hour early….we made them wait til the “new 5, which was the old “4” and now I am totally confused lol

  10. One of the benefits of seniors is they like to sleep, so DST doesn’t really impact them too much.

  11. Eve says:

Juley the beagle is always trying to get anything earlier than normal! No exception for yesterday either. I guess since breakfast was late then the new time for dinner was ok. I hadn’t even thought of that until just now! Whatever works is what I say!

  12. fredrieka says:

it is hard for us to get used to new things, but I think it is harder for bipeds who work, momwithoutpaws is retired, she gets up an hour later according to the clock but the same time according to dog clock

  13. So, you’re sort of playing the dog version of the Hunger Games. Minus the killing. And adding toys and actual food.

  14. Wendy says:

    It could be worse Will.

In Australia we are about to finish day light saving. Queensland, where I live, doesn’t do DST but most other states do. My friends live in New South Wales almost on the Qld / NSW border. They both work in Qld and their youngest son goes to school in NSW. Making appointments and short trips becomes a bit of a logistical time zone nightmare when it suddenly takes an extra hour to get places. I’m not sure how their cats deal…

As for me, now I can stop making inappropriately late phone calls to family and friends in the south.

All the best for the adjustment!

  15. It’s funny – this year, the animals still woke us up at the same, new time! Personally I love the sun being out later in the day. Ellie

  16. hahaha love the photos with the captions! I don’t like getting up in the dark but I do like the light when I drive home.

  17. LOL this is so true :-). Next week the UK clocks change, but as we are in America our friends who are cat/house sitting will have to train the moggies … GOOD LUCK to them ;-). Sorry not been around lately on blogs hope you are all well x

  18. Hungry Standard Time . . . I love that! In our house, everyone lives on Harper Lee Time, no matter what the clock says. We are exceptionally well-trained humans. 😉
