How Do Dogs Show Affection?

My post from the other week got me thinking about how dogs show affection, not for humans, but for other dogs. Penny’s affection is about as straightforward as it comes.23.1

“This is my brother, I love him.”

Couch snuggling, big tail wags and bouncing play jumps are just a few of the obvious ways Penny shows affection for Eko. On the other hand, I think Eko has a much more “rough around the edges” approach when it comes to showing affection for Penny.

As I mentioned, Eko never lays on Penny, but he is quite content to be her pillow. At this point he even leaves room on the futon where he knows she’s going to hop up. And while the pups often play together, Penny usually wants to romp with Eko long after he’s finished.

23.2

Eko could disengage entirely, but instead he lets Penny jump on him like he’s a piece of playground equipment.

23.3

Even Eko’s patience has limits though

Eko gets a nice break from Penny at the beach where she can run like a wild dog.

23.4

While Penny romps, Eko can do…whatever this is

But no matter how far she goes, Eko is Penny’s lifeguard at the beach. If he hears her yelp or thinks she’s gotten in over her head…

23.5

Big brother to the rescue!

Eko and Penny are opposite sides of the same coin. She’s cuddly and affectionate while Eko plays the tough guy with a soft heart.

Together, they’re a perfect fit

So now I’m thinking, there have to be a ton of great ways pets show affection for one another. From nuzzling to sharing toys to unique quirks, I’m sure there are plenty of ways pets take care of each other.  If you have a good story about pet-to-pet affection I’d love to hear it.

Comments for How Do Dogs Show Affection?

  1. They are like humans LOL. Penny reminds me a little of my mom…. Eko, please hide your credit card :o)

  2. KDKH says:

Sometimes my pets groom each other, even across species.

  3. coastingnz says:

My boys are pretty much the same as your boys – almost like watching their image on the other side of the world. Such similar temperaments for both dogs. Weird but it works. 🙂

  4. raisingdaisy says:

I love how much Penny’s affection for Eko shows – always. In some photos she really looks like she’s hugging him! I’ll bet in his own doggy way, even when Penny overwhelms him a bit, he thinks, “I sure wouldn’t want to go back to being an Only Dog again!” 😉

  5. Kismet says:

Maybe Eko is just a big stuffie?

  6. We used to have a outdoor cat, Sukie, (I was allergic so she couldn’t be indoors) and an indoor dog, Lincoln. Lincoln always was open to a relationship, but Sukie wanted nothing to do with her canine brother. However, if Sukie got caught in a cat fight in the back yard, Lincoln rushed to the rescue. He reacted faster than us, and, all we had to do was open the back door. He would tear out into the yard terrifying the trespassing cat thug. Then he would bound back inside, his job done.

Will: 1) You’re a great photographer, and 2) you have super-smart, camera-savvy subjects who also happen to be adorable, individually or together. 🙂 Go N.D.!

  8. Ogee says:

They sit face to face and pass a tennis ball back and forth from one mouth to the next. Just don’t expect that to happen with cookies!

  9. Emmadog says:

Bailie and I are big huggers. We love to give hugs and nuzzle our nose into Mom’s neck, or whomever’s neck we are snuggling with.

  10. Marcela says:

I agree with you Will. Together, they are a perfect fit.

  11. dashlilly says:

So similar here!! Dash would never snuggle on Lilly (she gets in his space easily) but any moment his sister is in a tricky spot at the park? He is off to get her. One time I swear he escorted her out of a pack of big guys and brought her back to me! Big brothers can be the best!

  12. harrispen says:

Millie loves to have Walter clean her ears and nibble on her neck but she never reciprocates. She often solicits this from him in the evenings when they are tired and hanging out in the big bed. They also love to play with each other a lot and never have a grumble with each other.

  13. Dakota is the one who shows the affection towards Cody (our cat) in our home, he often goes over and “kisses” him….on the head…or…LIPS! And Cody shuts his eyes with a sort of a smile on his face 🙂

  14. Eko is playing ostrich, mine will show affetion by doing what I call flea biting, one will nibble on the other ones face like eating a cob of corn.

  15. Whenever I see my friend Lyla, I jump on her head. It’s way up there because she’s mostly black lab. But I take a flying leap and bonk her giant head anyway. That’s love. Also I let her share my toys and she lets me share her mom.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  16. fredrieka says:

It is always great having a bestie, especially a big brother.. woof

  17. I love this post – Jack & Maggie pretty much ignore each other. I think Maggie would like to snuggle like Penny, but Jack is aloof…he only has eyes for me 😉 Our dog Tino used to be protective of Sally – like Eko – and would always be there to take on bullies. They would snuggle occasionally, but not often.

  18. The synchronicity these two show is so heartwarming and the photos are worth a 1000 words. Always makes me smile, inside and out when I see that Penny girl and her antics.

  19. Super post! I would like to invite you to the Black and White Photo Challenge . . . check out all the details here: https://lauracooperphotoblog.wordpress.com/2015/03/24/black-white-photo-challenge-day-2/

  20. Dottie and Tuffy-Cat says:

Today’s blog makes me think of me and my big brother. He and I were friends “most” of the time when we were kids, but sometimes very combative. Then out teens set in and we pretty much went our own ways with our own friends. Now we are both in our seventies and are closer than ever, even though we are many miles apart, but I couldn’t ask for a better brother (and protector) than him. He lives in Texas and I’m in Arkansas, but we talk on the phone about every week or so. He’s planning to drive here with his wife soon, so we can act silly, eat too much and, catch up on all the family gossip, and enjoy each other’s company. Thank God, we don’t have to rub noses. lol. I guess we aren’t so different from Penny and Eko…. just not quite as rambunctious.

  21. Cathy & Banjo says:

My Banjo (dog) and his best pal, Grayson (cat) are world class wrestlers. Cat hides behind kitty condo, dog passes by, cat ambushes dog, and it’s on! Dog retaliates by putting cat’s entire head in his mouth, cat slaps dog’s face, and on and on. After they go a few rounds, they flop down on the bed together for a snoozefest.
