Wedding Crashers?

Understandably, the question everyone’s asked about my wedding is, “Were the dogs there?” Here’s how that conversation went. “Emily, aren’t you so excited for our wedding!?” “Yes, so excited!” “Me too! I can’t wait for the dogs to pull our flower girl down the aisle on the custom chariot
Understandably, the question everyone’s asked about my wedding is, “Were the dogs there?” Here’s how that conversation went. “Emily, aren’t you so excited for our wedding!?”

“Yes, so excited!”

“Me too! I can’t wait for the dogs to pull our flower girl down the aisle on the custom chariot I’m building!”

“Wait, what…”

When it came to including the pups in our wedding ceremony I might have gotten slightly ahead of myself.

I imagined Penny up there next to Emily

And a dapper Eko sitting by my side

They would of course escort us down the aisle in a coordinated stride

In truth, I knew trying to involve the dogs in the ceremony would be a herculean task on top of the already large challenge of planning the wedding. Emily and I were married in a renovated warehouse that doubles as a vintage/antique store. All I could imagine was Penny getting loose and destroying the place.

A bull in a china shop looks timid compared to Penny

Arranging for care/transportation of the pups was a logistical nightmare as well. Most importantly, I wanted to make sure the day was about Emily, not the pups. With that in mind I happily shelved my dreams of an Eko/Penny drawn chariot. That’s not to say I abandoned the idea completely. Thanks to the incredible efforts of a family friend, we had time to squeeze in one quick cameo… I promise to share the full story once we get all of our photos from the day back. Trust me, it’s worth the wait!

Comments for Wedding Crashers?

  1. Oh wow you planned it very well… and the video of the flowergirl and the cutom chariot would make you rich :o) buut I’m sure it was a wonderful and unforgettable moment even without the chariot… but hey this idea has something… hahahaha

  2. Great photos…. My son is getting married next month. The wedding will be held outside in the vineyards at a historic farmhouse. I pitched the idea to my son of Kali pulling Smokey (as ring bearer with the ring hanging on a ribbon from his mouth) in a red wagon down the aisle. His finance nixed the idea and broke Kali’s (my) heart 🙂

You rarely fail to make me laugh. You should know that your blog and your amazing dogs help me to unwind and smile at the end of my working day. I am a palliative care nurse and often come home having broken bad news or been with someone as they die. Your blog is where I go to for a smile, to restore my sense of normality and see the huge joy and laughter that is in the everyday. Thank you for your blog.

  4. KarenS says:

You’re a smart man Will. Not only did you marry an intelligent woman, you were smart enough to not make it a memorable day for the wrong reason 🙂 Although the thought of Eko & Penny pulling a chariot, dressed on their finest is intriguing, perhaps when you renew your vows in a year or two.

  5. Penny does seem to channel a little Vince Vaughn AND Owen Wilson so that was probably a good choice. Eko on the other hand seems the perfect canine hunky rendition of Bradley Cooper. 😉

  6. KDKH says:

Great pic of Emily –“wait, what?” Perfect capture of that look!

  7. Kismet says:

Whaddya mean get the photos back?????

  8. Good call, Will. Good call. On top of all the wedding expenses, you wouldn’t want to add on all the “you broke it, you bought it.”

  9. Emmadog says:

Mom says it it like going back in time to the days of film where you always had to wait days for your photos until the cool 1 hr services popped up, but still usually half the photos were lousy and couldn’t be redone after such a long period of time. Thank goodness for digital pics! We can’t wait to see your pics!

  10. Can’t wait to see the photos……! I know that the day was perfect just the way it was…..with or without two wild ridgeback ringbearers!

  11. Connie Taylor says:

Eko and Penny pulling the chariot would have been priceless, and yes it would have been one of those moments you see on “America’s Funniest Videos” that wins the big prize. But you married a very smart women, that could see the problems before they started! Congrats on your day and we are all waiting for the photos!!! 🙂

  12. coastingnz says:

Knew they’d be there somewhere, even if only in spirit. Love these shots – aptly tagged as usual so can’t wait to see how you did include them, even if only for a short time. Main thing is as long as you guys had a great day and it certainly sounds like you did. Enjoy that break while you can.

  13. raisingdaisy says:

Maybe if you renew your vows in the future, the pups can draw the chariot, though the same flower girl will be a bit heavier by then…or maybe by that time she’ll be the one pulling the pups in the chariot… 😉 Looking forward to the photos! 😀

  14. T&S says:

🙂 smart decision. I think it would be too much for them.
When we got married, we found nice open type dog hotel (in house staying, no crating) for our male (we only had him then). He had a lot of fun with labradors wich were there also for the weekend (his favorite dog breed) but when the night came he couldnt sleep and the rest of the house also because of his whining 🙂 he was great again next morning, playing with the labradors when we came to get him 🙂

  15. T&S says:

    Looking forward to your photos!

When we renew our vows, its going to be less formal and with our fur kids present, so its the same advice for you 😉

  16. Wendy says:

My cousin had two West Highland White terriers walk down the aisle at her wedding. Very cute with one in a frilly white collar and the other in a bow tie. I think they were quite a bit older than Penny though, and obviously Westies being such little dogs are a less daunting prospect to include in a wedding party than two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Discretion is the better part of valour…

  17. Marcela says:

Lol. That is so cool. Yes, pictures, pictures, please.

  18. Eve says:

Can’t wait to see & read about this!! Of course it would have been great to see Eko & Penny in the wedding too. I can just think of all the mayhem that Penny would get into when left for just a quick second by herself! lol

  19. Congratulations! Can’t wait to see the photos.

  20. Dottie Wells and Tuffy-Cat says:

Congratulations to the happy couple. I’m talking about the two-legged, not the furry four-legged ones. They will be over all over you and Emily when you finally get home.
    Hugs,
    Dottie and Tuffy-Cat

  21. Fozziemum says:

Oh wise move…as much as you both love them i do not think a wedding ceremony that turns into an episode of man versus beast would go down well with the bride 🙂 so happy for you all 🙂 hugs Fozziemum

  22. I can’t believe you were worried about the 2 most proper pups on the planet. Ha! I can’t wait to see the pictures!!

  23. ROFL!!! So glad this is one day I checked the WP feed! That would have been so funny and Emily must feel so special for you to think of her and her alone. 🙂 Praying I don’t miss the update!

  24. Jan Wheeler says:

This was a nice surprise. I didn’t expect a post today. And a cute one, too.

Rusty was a good boy at the vet’s this morning. Got poked and prodded and stuck and squished. I suspected his little butt needed squishing and it did. Should get the blood test results back Thursday. He had lost a little weight .. weighed 29.4. Everyone, especially me, was pleased. All the walking the driveway we’re doing is working nicely.

This afternoon I took stuff to the recycling center, got a few things at Kroger’s. Then I went by Wendy’s food dispensing window, brought home a burger and fries. My boy had a hard day. He deserved a few fries.

He lounged in the sunshine this afternoon .. totally oblivious to the mini-alligator on the railing.

Thinking of you and Maddie. Love you.
